Wood Grain Tumblers are a great beginner epoxy tumbler craft! I use Tim Holtz alcohol ink in Teakwood for my tumblers, but you can get creative with any alcohol ink colors you want. If you've never used alcohol ink tumblers, then you're definitely missing out!

Help! What am I doing wrong? When I apply the alcohol ink to my prepped tumbler the alcohol ink eats the paint. I use 2x rustolium and Tim Holtz alcohol ink.

Is your paint dry when you apply the alcohol ink? I’ve never had an issue with the ink reacting with the paint before, so that’s the only reason I can think of.

Wouldn't the acrylic spray seal in the in to prevent it being pulled off from transfer tape?

There is a layer of epoxy over the alcohol ink, so transfer tape won’t mess it up ☺️

When before you epoxy do you have to do a gloss coat or can you just epoxy? If you don't use the clear coat will it mess up the ink?

I always recommend a coat of acrylic sealer so you don't risk re-activating the alcohol ink.

I didn't notice a green tint after sealing. It's more likely a difference in the lighting I was using.

Love this! I’m making one of these tomorrow. I want to put a decal on the cup though. Should I put a thin coat of epoxy on then the decal? Or can I just put the decal straight onto the wood grain then coat it with epoxy?

Coat it with epoxy, let it cure, then add your decal and another coat of epoxy on top.

I recommend a layer of epoxy before adding any decals so your transfer tape doesn’t remove any of the ink.

After you add a decal, you should do a second coat of epoxy. If you're not adding a decal then I wouldn't add another coat.

When I sealed the alcohol ink it turned somewhat greenish and the ink started to run and fade. I'm using Rust-oleum painter's touch 2x ultra cover.

Some ink colors do that under epoxy. Try a different ink color.

The epoxy needs a better surface to stick to. Try a clear coat of acrylic sealer on the cup before epoxying.

I used regular epoxy that you mix at a 1:1 ratio ☺️. I was off the screen while mixing so I cut that part out. Good question!

It will dry crazy fast! As soon as it's dry you can seal it and start with epoxy.

The acrylic sealer gets covered by the epoxy. Several epoxy brands are FDA compliant, so most folks have no issues with it.

I can’t wait to try it! Thanks for the tutorial. If you wanted to add vinyl to it, would you want to epoxy the alcohol ink first and then do your vinyl, or is that not necessary?

You're welcome! Yes, you would epoxy it first and then add your vinyl decal and then more epoxy. Alcohol ink is easily pulled off by transfer tape so that's why I would stick to that order of things. :)

I like to use a paint brush with a straight edge at the bottom, but just about any paint brush will do.

Great Video! How much epoxy do you use for the tumblers ? I am working on 32 oz and 24 oz tumblers. I am afraid of using too much. Is it a different measurement for different sizes ? And how many coats ? Thank You!

I did this same method but when I sprayed my sealer it made the alcohol ink run and it also made the white run from my prepped tumbler. I used the same as yours. Can you tell me what I may have done wrong?

Hmm that's interesting. Try doing a really light coat of acrylic spray. No need to go super heavy with your spray :). The only other thing I can think of is that the alcohol ink and base coat may not be completely dry. It usually dries quickly, but sometimes with high humidity it might be take longer than usual.

My base coat is glossy. I don’t see any reason why it would need to be flat because the epoxy is going to make it appear glossy anyway.

No you'll spray paint first. If you're talking about the prep stage, then no you want to sand and paint before epoxy. If you mean the layer of clear acrylic spray, then you'll spray the alcohol ink to seal it in and then epoxy.

The greenish tint can be due to the color of alcohol ink reacting with the epoxy. Try using a different color for your wood grain. Do you prep you tumblers before adding ink? That may help with fish eyes.

@@DIYAlex Mine does this as well. I've tried twice-following these instructions and it's fish-eyed both times! Very frustrating. Not sure what I'm doing wrong? I've used Teexpert epoxy and Krylon clear acrylic .
