Just made one of these for my wife for christmas. Don't have a lathe so it was done with a drill in a vice and sandpaper. I cut the outside first, drilled a small hole then fed a scroll saw blade through the hole to cut out the center. This probably wasn't ideal but it worked. Finished it with danish oil.
I've seen other videos where guys use layers of CA glue, sanded between coats, and the finish always comes out great. Absolutely amazing final product, I'm sure your girlfriend liked it!
You can buy it in amazon. www.amazon.com/Purple-Heart-Pen-Blank-5-Pack/dp/B00FNQLTK6/ref=sr_1_4?__mk_es_US=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&crid=1JFCZHPGQLX9Q&keywords=purple%2Bheart%2Bpen%2Bblanks&qid=1556374471&s=gateway&sprefix=purple%2Bheart%2Bpen%2Caps%2C329&sr=8-4&th=1
Nicely made! I make wooden rings myself, and I am about to make a few from purple wood this week! However I believe you still got the grain running along the ring?
You can turn the ring a dark purple by baking it at 350 farenheit (176 celcius) for one hour. Small objects like aring may take shorter time so keep an eye on it, if it starts turning very dark or black stop! (Ps apparently it smells odd :-) ) It's better to cook the entire piece of wood before working it, the colour changes right through the wood so when the colour fades with time all you is sand the surface off and the colour will be revealed again
You did a really good job on that ring. May I ask question please? You said, at the start, that the wood wasn't thick enough to let you drill in your preferred orientation. Do you mean drilling the hole in endgrain to keep as much fibre contact as possible by having side grain the whole way around the ring? I am going to make a ring and would like to get the start right. Thank you. Best Wishes, Brendan.
In addition to small cuts and very sharp tools, I've heard that adding Thin CA glue before lathing can help to prevent chip out. The Thin CA glue penetrates the wood a bit and helps keep the grain together.
I love Purple Heart wood. Too expensive on Amazon and I’m not sure if the rings aren’t dyed. If you decide to make and sell rings or jewelry boxes from this unique wood please let me know.
I just finnished my ring it's made of the second hardest wood in the world did it all by hand took my 6 stright hours to file it and carve it with a knife then sanded it down by hand no power tools at all
