Thank you for making this to the point! #1 reason why I hate watching craft videos is because they take 25mins to do what you did in 5! Lol This was super helpful!!
I am wanting to make these types of signs but for outdoor decor as well. Any suggestions on how to ensure the vinyl stays protected and doesn't fall off?
Love your projects! I am searching for a way to do a wood sign that will be outside in the weather… Any suggestions for me? Thank you for sharing your talents with us, I have learned so much !!
Thank you do much ❤ i love creating signs for outside. I would suggest always sanding really well before working with your sign, use polly after to seal your project. Make sure to use vinyl 651...my videos all show step by step...Hope this helps?
Hi Nichole, for these particular signs, I did not put anything over the letters to seal it. They were just for inside so I had no reason to. But if I was to put them outside in the elements I would have put polly over it. Hope this helps?
Hi Solange, I used orical 651 and no I didn't put any sealant or anything over it. If they were going outside I would have put polly on it to protect it from the outside elements. Hope this helps
I do only if it's going outside. Polyurethane is what I use. I recently heard you should seal before putting on the vinyl, but I've always sealed after putting vinyl on
Honestly I use whatever is on sale at Menards, I don't have a specific type. But always always be sure to sand really well before doing anything with the wood. And I'm sorry I dont remember the measurements off hand, that project was created a long time ago.
Hi Alice, honestly I use whatever I have around my workshop. I don't have a personal preference. Just make sure you sand your wood really well before staining and if needed a little after lightly. I love the lighter stains because it brings the natural look of wood out. Hope this helps?
4:54 the letters are bubbling up in several places in the end of the video. How do you prevent that from happening? Especially if you plan to sell the signs. Thanks
After further looking, there are no places where the vinyl is bubbling up. What you see is light reflecting off the camera onto the white vinyl. But thank you for your comment
I see it too. You'll want to press the vinyl on in one direction, or from the center out to the edges so that it doesn't get pulled apart or pushed together.
I'm half way through your video. I still don't know how to get started. I have not made one single thing with my Cricut. Where do you suggest I start? All I wanted to do was make a cute sign with my business name on it to display in my booth. Thank you so much.
Oh no...hope you got it now? Basically create a image in DS and you can cut it out on vinyl (651 if you want it Permenant) and then use transfer tape to transfer your vinyl to your sanded board. Really important to make sure your surface is sanded
Hi, welcome to my chsnnel. I use wood from menards and sad it really well before painting. I use a cricut maker, but there are so many vinyl cutters out there. I cut my wood with a saw and my vinyl to make stencils with my cricut. Hope this helps
@@icreatecrafts8462 I’m looking for the font. I’m trying to write bride and grooms first names to go on pallette wood to place on easel outside the wedding room.
I purchase my wood. Mostly from menards. Round signs prices are coming down a bit. Otherwise I buy a 10 foot piece of wood and cut and router it myself. Hope this helps?
Sorry to hear this, that is so frustrating happens to me more times than none. I think it's because your wood needs to be sanded better. I have never heard of stain being pulled up, I have had paint come off. Either way i would say it's because your surface is not smooth enough or your transfer tape is too sticky. Hope this helps
Welcome to the crafting club Joi 😃 I love making my own signs, that's what I specialize in, but branched out creating other things. I have the maker, but honestly I havent done much other than cutting vinyl and a dabbled a bit with fabric. I need to create more things using this awesome machine. I would suggest getting the maker because its the newest machine but it's the most expensive. I had the explore which was great, but one of the clamps broke on me so I upgraded to the maker. I dont want to influence you, but I would totally buy the maker, but wait for a sale. Hope this helps and welcome aboard 😉
Yes if you put any signs outside I recommend sealing them with clean poly. Orical 651 is suppose to last 5-6 years I think, but rain and sun will take away some of that time. Thanks for watching :)
I have never sealed my boards. I use permanent vinyl so I've never had an issue. Now if you were to leave the sign outside in the elements I'd seal it with some kind of polly. Hope this helps
Oh no! I’ve had this happen to me multiple times, and I know how frustrating it is, the only thing I would suggest or see it might be, is your wood is not sanded enough or if it was sand enough maybe it had too many pieces of particles on it after you sanded it.
Hi,no nothing to seal if it's not going outside. Orical 651 is a permanent vinyl. If it's going outside, I put polly over it to seal it from the elements. Hope this helps 😉
Thank you ;) these I did not mount, but if I were to, I would use sawtooth hangers with little nails on the back. I hope this helps and thank you for subscribing;)
@@icreatecrafts8462 Hello. What do you use to seal it? I'm thinking about doing some signs for outdoors. And what did you use to stain the wood? Thank you in advance.
Hi Charley, I just bought a board from Menards it was a 5x6 and it was only $5 something. Do you have a menards or home depot around you? I have never heard of the wood being so expensive
I always use permanent orical 651 for my signs. I was using craftable transfer tape it was strong, but expensive so I switched to a different kind. Here’s the link to what I purchase; amzn.to/2XKmVo1
I use acrylic or chalk paint, I have yet to try HTV, but out of the signs I made over the years and have kept them outside there has never been a problem.
I tried to transfer my letters on to painted wood. No matter how hard I pressed on them...they would not leave the transfer paper. Is there a step I am missing. Do you have to rough up the wood?
Hi, did you sand your wood really really well before painting it? Sometimes when I didn't sand well enough my vinyl wouldn't stick. Are you using optical 651?
Ho Rosie, sorry to hear that, I was just creating a sign using orical 631 for a stencil. Did you sand it so it is really smooth with no hard rough spots? Maybe its not sticking because of the stain you used? What brand are you using?
@@icreatecrafts8462 Yes it was sanded well and I used minwax wood stain. I think it must have something to do with the stain because I did one with just acrylic paint and it stuck fine. I'm doing a test now by applying minwax polycrylic after staining and see if it will stick then.
The part where you put the stickers on the wood. I'm interested in getting a cricut but I want to fully understand how the process of getting it on the wood works before I go and buy it. I make wood projects and I think if I get I will love it. Thanks :)
@@csds7679 I know you would love a cricut, endless possibilities 😉 I'm sorry I went quick with that part, I will make you a special video showing you and others step by step how to create a sign using vinyl, how's that? If your not subscribed already please make sure you are and watch for that video. I'll work on it this week 😀
Oh no. I had thst same issue a few months ago. I sanded my wood so well, but no matter what the vinyl wouldn't stick. Is it sanded really well? And are you using permanent vinyl? I will get you through this ;)
@@icreatecrafts8462 it is sanded, painted and permanent vinyl and still doesn’t stick. I tried adding heat to it to make it “stickier” and when I tried removing the transfer tape it still wouldn’t stick to the wood 😮💨 it would come off with the transfer tape
Shoot. Like I said I had the same issue a few months ago, never happened before. I was thinking it was the humidity 😫 still not sure. I did try another board and it helped a ittle but was still having some issues. Man I wish I could suggest something else. Could you try a new board?
4:58 Wow a lot of lifting of certain areas of the lettering. I wouldn't charge someone money for letters tat aren't flat. I heard heat transfer is better..then obviously hand calligraphy as well
Thanks for watching and commenting. But it's the lighting that makes the vinyl look like they aren't flat. I agree I wouldn't charge someone for sloppy work, but this was mine to keep. All of the crafts I create, I keep. I just show people how to make things. I never said my items were perfect. And I also agree that hand written is better, but not everyone is talented to so that type.
Not that I know of, they all are clear. I was buying my transfer tale from the $1 store until I found out about craftables brand, I won't ever go back. A little pricy but it works great and you can reuse a bunch of times
