MMM 34 - Here I show you my process for making small wooden dice. There is a lot of room for improvement here, and I'm hoping you'll tell me just what to do. Thanks!

This is nice. I saw a book on hand carving a set of dice then using a wood burner for the pips. Also worth mentioning the pips on opposite faces should add up to seven. I like how you built the little jig/stop bar thing. I'm hoping to make some tomorrow.

Did you make sure to weight them properly (IE drill the holes on the faces with less holes deeper slightly so that the center of mass isn't off)?
@MidwestManMountain
@MidwestManMountain 8 лет назад
+cooldude23407 Alas, I did not. If I were to do these again I wouldn't even drill holes at all actually. I've learned that a better method would be to burn in small indented divots. Thanks for commenting!

Love the "design option" lol! I say that when quilting... Now I "deliberately" add or leave in "oopsies". Lol

My girlfriend loves dice games so I think I’m gonna try to make her these for her birthday. But I have the idea to put steel or copper bbs in the holes to make them look a little nicer

I made a set of pretty nice dice and an outstanding box, the box was significantly better than the set of dice. So obviously I'm on to v2.0 dice. Now its 60 year old reclaimed maple with copper inserts for the divets. Proof of concept is coming along swimmingly might I add. Your video was helpful, thanks.

The tripod on the table saw shot was actually pretty cool. Looked like a pan almost. Like the dice, like the case, good video. One question - how come the work piece appeared to climb up the blade on the first shot of you cutting it, and how can you avoid that?
@MidwestManMountain
@MidwestManMountain 8 лет назад
Thanks Matthew! I was able to fix that climbing problem after this video. It was happening in part because my faceplate wasn't properly flush with the top of the saw, and also my push sticks were too short.

Even if they are a little rough a round the edges they maybe even taste better than the smooth german kale

Hi Koji, thanks for the comment! At the moment I'm not taking any orders, however I may be opening an Etsy site in September to sell a few products for Christmas. Dice would make a great stocking-stuffer! Be sure to catch my Tuesday vlogs in particular in September for any announcement of an online store. Thanks!

Hello, a little late, but I was wondering how you would go about making them from something round, such as from deer antlers?
@MidwestManMountain
@MidwestManMountain 7 лет назад
That sounds cool. In that cased, I would recommend holding the antler pieces in a vice grip and then using a drill press. Have fun making those!

I have been woodworking for 40 years. I learnt about kickback the hard way. I got hit by a 2x4. It happens so fast you can't even blink. It caused a massive bruise on my left side. I never operate a table saw without a splitter or riving knife. Please be safer and make a splitter or use the riving knife(if your saw came with one). I cringe seeing people pushing stock thru with no splitter or riving knife.

Where is your blade guard!
@jessefurqueron5555
@jessefurqueron5555 6 лет назад
For you other readers:. Invest the money, get an overhead blade guard w removeable splitter if you don't like removing the blade guard for jigs. And if you're using a jig like a crosscut sled try to put safety guards (lexan/back blade blocks etc) on them. And PLEASE loose the long sleeves and jewelry while you're using power tools. Using the stop on the right side of the blade, just like using a fence with a miter gauge, face full of wood (or worst) waiting to happen. Guards are cheaper than a trip to the emergency room and prosthetics . Bear with an oldish timer for a story: Was in the Plano Texas Medical Center emergency room around 7:30 one night (on a non-woodworking related visit) about 17-18 years ago. A lady walks in carrying a tupperware container. She's running across the room, crying. Behind her a fella walks in half hunched over, white as a freaking sheet. His right hand was wrapped in a blood soaked towel, he was walking slowly, in a daze and almost stumbled and fell down. He was in pain and shock. Heard the wife (presumably) tell the nurse he had been using his tablesaw without the blade guard. Guess what was in the tupperware bowl: most of three fingers and half a thumb. Apparently, from what he was able to kinda say, the short wood piece he was ripping kicked back and shot off across the room; and (without the blade guard in place) his hand went forward right into the blade. As for the push stick, can't say much there. I use a leftover curly maple slat from my kid's crib I built decades ago. Its about 4" shorter now and the curly in it is highly polished from hand oils. STAY SAFE emphasis intended.

Before making a video and a bunch of these dice you might want to find out how a dice is made! If you add up the opposing sides they add up to 7. Cannt just put random dots on.
@Hellsong89
@Hellsong89 Год назад
Also since you drill material out for the dots not there is abhorrent balancing issue, well as corners being hand rounded that changes results as well. Cool decoration but not a dice really

Please do yourself a favour and stop using those garbage push sticks. I recommend the ones that JH makes on "I Build It" I make them 20 - 30 at a time and are much safer to use

Okay - we're yet practicing. Instead of two giant hands in front of the camera lens, I was *really* curious to see at least *one* roll of dice at the end of your video. I won't dislike this time, but I can't either give a thumbs up. Sorry, pal..
