Black and white Xerox posters were a major part of the 1970s counterculture aesthetic. Artist and graphic designer Marlene Weisman guest hosts a special Club 57 takeover edition of IN THE STUDIO and demonstrates how to transfer the ink from Xerox prints to a new sheet of paper to create collages, posters, and other works of art using the same pre-Photoshop technique that she used in the 1970s and '80s.

Wow! She doesn’t look old enough to be clubbing in the 70’s and 80’s! Beautiful jewelry too. The transfers come out clean and so much better than with transfer medium. I’d never seen it in action, thank you!

HA, we did this in school and when I was in the military (graphics) it's also called Turpentine Transfer or solvent transfer. Works really well with color laser copies, as well as color magazine pictures.

I began making art using a similar reproduction effect but altogether different way in 1990s Web art era .. the way I approached it was using a scanner instead of a copier (set to black and white or line mode). I scanned all kinds of things, from crumpled up wrapping paper and magazines photos and 3D objects with paper behind. By adjusting the scanner settings and using digital filters I got some really interesting results...after I scanned I would selectively colour in (digitally) parts of the scan, overlay other scans and images with transparency layers or place 3D objects in colour (scanned) onto the black and white backgrounds. With web design (using Flash and javascript) I was able to take the art a stage further and create interactive backdrops where parts of the image would change or sounds would be played with user interaction of the mouse pointer. That was a really fun creative time with many well known but anonymous Web artists all over the world creating stunning pieces every few months. Web artists would acknowledge other artists in their works by putting another artists name and a heart or something as a URL link, or would put challenges to other artists who would then respond with a new work.

Loved this. Took me by surprise how creative one can be with relatively few tools at our disposal, especially the use of the omnipresent Xerox machine. Especially great was the absence of any modern computer work, such as Photoshop or Illustrator. Thank you for this. I failed to mention my thanks to the artist Marlene Weisman.

personally, I appreciate the compsition you created in this tutorial. albeit partially complete as you suggested, i enjoy the whimsical nature of the components themselves, and combined with their relationship in the final piece i love the sense of motion that draws the eye into the paper in an almost participatory fashion. well done.

Nice video I used to do a lot of xerox transfers using Citrasolv (a orange cleaner found in most supermarkets). I was just telling one of my adult printmaking students that it only worked with a carbon toner copy, but we tried it using a laser printer and it worked great. Since I have the use of an etching press I find it transfers better than hand rubbing.

Thank You for the GREAT video. Can someone suggest the model of a *** NEW - Xerox / Copy Machine *** that will work for this process ? I have contacted many major copy machine manufactures - but NO ONE can break down the toner chemical ingredients. Wondering if this process needs a a toner that uses allot of Carbon versus plastic.

Thanks, very helpful and downright fun. Do you need to spray a fixative over the work after you are finished? Or is the toner permanently fixed to the paper after the transfer?

Hi there. Marlene was amazing in this video. Loved the throwback to 80s NYC and the music club scene. I could imagine all of it like I was right there. And lover nyc accent, vibe and down-to-earth friendliness. (And those rings!! Omg. I love those rings.). She’s definitely cool from the inside out :). I actually do have a couple of questions amidst all my gushing 😜. Is it possible to apply this technique with colour prints? I was also confused by the distinction between laser and toner prints as I’ve seen other videos that specify laser prints for use with other transfer mediums like golden products. (Never ink jet, I assume because it would just be a big mess). Am also interested in using this process on canvas so widening if it would work in this way and if one could gesso it ahead of time.) Hope someone can he’ll answer. Thanks and yanks for the great and helpful videos❣️

Every other tutorial I've watched online about this process, shows a milder transfer (as in in a lighter; not as dark). I used hot press watercolor paper, Xerox toner imagery (black and white), 90% acetone NP remover, and a sponge. Did everything like you didm but my results were barely noticeable. Any tips/suggestions? Very bummed out. Thanks!

I have heard about another transfer technique, but never tried: if you print an image on non-stick paper like baking sheets, you can just press it on the surface you want to transfer to without using chemicals. The resolution might not be as good though.
