I was watching this and remembering a "fur yarn" Cheshire Cat scarf hoodie I had crocheted that had tragically FELTED in the wash! Your technique of straightening the fibers may SAVE my favorite project by UN-Felting it! I'm going to go buy a carding brush and a flat iron! Thanks so much!

Those faux fur mats always get messed up in the wash. When I had a pet grooming salon someone brought in one of those for us to wash. That's when I first realized I could treat it like actual fur on a pet. So I washed, shampooed, blow dried it and used a pet brush. It came out beautifully!!

Isn't this amazing? During all the years I've been a yarn crafter and watched a bazillion yarn related tutorials, I've seen plenty of people spin yarn from "fur" or roving. But until now I've never anyone do the opposite - unyarning! It lends an awesome effect and would be great for so many different projects. Thanks for showing this!

Yavonne, this video came up while I was searching for ways to crochet fur. I overlooked it about 5 times and finally just watched it and this is going to be SO MUCH BETTER!! My daughter is in 3d grade and making a Valentine's day box for her class party. She just learned that they're picking a winner for the best box! So she came up with the idea of doing a unicorn box ! She is going to use origami to build the horn and wings (Yes, I know unicorns don't have wing's but she insists on wings), but we needed new a good way to cover the body with fur and THIS IS IT!!!! I'll have her use a hole punch on the cardboard box and pull the yarn through those holes to cover the entire body. I'm so excited! She'll have a blast! I'll post pics when she's done. Wish her luck!!!

Hi Yvonne, I have just watched you making fur out of yarn and i have to tell you for a person like myself who has very little in the way of budget and tons of wool laying around this is pardon my English, Bloody brilliant. I can do the same thing on a fabric stiffener and thread it through there to give me the same effect. I am so glad i stumbled upon you this year its amazing as a crafter how much more i have learned just from watching you craft your magic. Thank you so so very much. i am blown away by the wool to fur magic. Faux fur is so bloody expensive to buy and when you only need a little bit of fur it makes no sense for me to buy a meter of fur for 6 inches of fur on a doll outfit. Thanks again Yvonne you rock girly thank you. Every time i watch you i learn something new. I am totally gob smacked.

I had learned a little bit about this awhile back from a friend (who made tails for people in school when it was still super popular). I learned a few really good tips, tricks, and ideas here, which is great! I was trying to find an easy way to attach faux fur made of yarn to some pants, as I'm going to be a satyr for Halloween this year (2018). I love that you just punched holes into your material and how you kept them in by just using another piece of yarn! it makes things so easy, and I don't know why I didn't think of it. also, I love the straightener idea! my friend had never used one, as people liked when the tails were fluffier, but I was looking for a different look.

Neck Deep Jay I actually braided a lot of yarn together like a rope, then tied in some bunches of purple and black yarn and brushed those out for my Cheshire Cat cosplay a couple years ago. It took a while to do, but then I laced in some small LEDs on the little string with the battery pack, so I had a light up tail. I put a carabiner clip at the top and wore it attached to my skirt, where it clips into the belt loop then the battery and switch go in the pocket. It was super fun to do, and was a great hit at the conventions I go to :)

Thank you for this great video. I made a project for work (a yeti) and I used this technique for the fur. I looped the yarn through plastic mesh, and after brushing it out, I attached it to the project. Wish I could send you a photo. It turned out great! Thanks again!

This video is so great, thank you for sharing Yvonne! I spent a fortune on craft fur making Christmas gnomes last year and figured there had to be a way to make my own. Thank goodness for RU-vid and more importantly you for making the best instructional video I could find on the topic! If i want to pre-make beards for my gnomes, do you have any good suggestions on what I could use to attach the yarn to instead of leather? TIA for your reply. :)

@MiLittleCorner Год назад
I'm a little late but this is such a great idea. I plan on doing this for gnome beards also. My gnomes are small so it should be pretty easy but I'm going to sew (by machine) the yarn onto grosgrain ribbon, brush out the yarn and glue the beard to the body of the gnome before I add the hat. That way, the ribbon and top of the beard will be hidden. Yvonne's method of preparing the yarn is genius and I'm going to do the same thing, also doubling it like she did. I can make the ribbon as long as I like and the yarn as full as I like. Grosgrain ribbon is sturdy but not bulky and should hold up to the tension of brushing the yarn. Just support the yarn and the ribbon when brushing out the yarn. If you've made some beards, I'd love to hear what you came up with to make your gnome beards.

MAnnnn!! So cool. You could get like 10 different colors of brown, black, or blonde and really make it look like regular fur with different color tones. Such a cool demo.

Thankyou Yvonne for sharing your wonderful talent with me,im making a large gnome out of a very large detergent bottle,and was stuck wondering how to make a beard for him,as we are in lockdown due to covid here in Newport, South Wales, UK, and I'm using up my scraps of material and wadding to fatten up his tummy,I have a few balls of wool and couldn't work out how to make the beard,until I come across your very helpful video! I love love love your beautiful dog,we have a golden retriever called Rosie, who also loves to walk in to make sure I'm ok when I'm crafting and to have a hug and a kiss too!I've subscribed to hopefully learn a lot more, you're a very talented lady and have a lovely way of teaching us all,I'll definitely be back soon!love and hugs from over the pond!xxx

I guess for longer fur would you ... use a wider tube??? I'm making a creature with different lengths of fur. Thick and longer around neck and tail... I'm interested.
@backtoearthcreations
@backtoearthcreations 7 лет назад
Hey, Jennifer! I have found that with the yarn fur it is limited by the weft of the yarn (if that is the right term....) the fibers the yarn is spun from are only so long, and that limits how long the final fur can be. For longer fur I would experiment with cutting the yarn long and only brush out the last 3 inches of it, if that makes sense :)

Some 30 yrs ago, I had made my son a lion halloween costume. I had made the costume itself in fleece and threaded through the hood lenghts of acrylic yarn, then untwisted it and brushed it. I had made the ears with suede. And painted his face with an elaborate lion pattern. Needless to say, it was a big hit. The school even asked me to replicate the makeup for a show they had at school. And there was my son, opening the parade with his costume and makeup. He was so proud! And so was I. I also used this technique to make a cushion. Worked great!

what can i do with the fuzzy yarn left over from the brush? no matter how I brush the yarn it all comes off on the brush so could I make a fur rug from that? I just hate to waste it!

Kawaii Generous, lovely sentiment! 😄 Only problem is, the plastic never breaks down so it just becomes pollution and can kill an animal or bird who gets tangled up in some or eats any of it. 😒 It's safer in pillows!

Probably a dumb question, but you know the pom pom rugs everyone is making? Could you use this technique on that as well of you wanted to have a "fur" rug with the legit fur? I hope that makes sense
@backtoearthcreations
@backtoearthcreations 7 лет назад
hmm, maybe! I think you would have more luck with a latch stitch style base and just adding a bunch of yarn to that and brushing it out :)
@jmkupihea7630
@jmkupihea7630 7 лет назад
I think if you cut a latch hook backing into a 'hide' shape, then used natural colored yarns to make the animal pattern, it would come out great!
