“Break a little the perfection of the shape!” - Said I, who would have believed :) Here is an excerpt from my personal feedback to Anne-Marie.
There is nothing wrong with trying to be correct and precisely perfect in your movement or technique… when you practice and when you learn. If we understand this “correctness” of execution as just one part of the way in jazz dance.
How interesting is this idea of correctness? Now let’s see, I think we can talk about “correctness” from at least 2 angles. Correct as in have fear of making a mistake or correct as in making an efficient technique and being with music. What we don’t want, I suppose, is to be that “correct dancer” in it’s first meaning. That correctness that is actually limiting.
Every time you do that same step, do it a bit differently, as if for the first time.
So I always invite myself to connect to a little wild side of things. Where we fill the form of the move with vivid fire, life, imperfection as in liberty.
Now of course we don't want to let loose! In no way. We just want to explore the raw movement within the style.
“Like all good dancers, practitioners of this style do not throw their bodies around; they do not cut completely loose. When the musical break comes , it is not a matter “of letting it all hang out,” but a matter of proceeding in terms of “ a very specific technology of stylisation. A loss of control and a loss of coolness places one squarely outside of tradition” (“Steppin’ on the Blues”, page 34)
This is an excerpt talking about the fascinating concept of “aesthetics of the cool”. The idea that we shouldn’t let the dance overwhelm us. But we can express ourselves in a playful way in every step.

I think the difference between an expert and a master is that the expert can execute the move perfectly but the master can make the move serve him for the purpose of expression. Great insight, Ksenia. Thank you.
