OK, so according to a lot of folks, my “front bow” and “back bow” terms are REVERSED! Well, that’s how they taught me in homeschool. Oh well. Loosening the rod pulls the neck AWAY from the strings, tightening the rod brings it TOWARDS the strings. Call that whatever ya want!
@sauerkrautoneverything7807
@sauerkrautoneverything7807 3 года назад
I downloaded an image as a reference because you're right, depending on where you read how to adjust your truss rod, the same term can mean the exact opposite thing.

I really prefer the "arch your back" versus "slouch" for explaining which direction the neck is bending. It's a lot more intuitive than concave vs convex to most people.
@sauerkrautoneverything7807
@sauerkrautoneverything7807 3 года назад
@@icenic_wolf Slouch and arch makes a lot of sense. However, we're on the internet, and someone will confuse those terms, and create an group of people with the opposite perspective. Lol, can't win. That's why I use a picture that works for me that I saved on my computer incase I forget.

Homeschool HAHA - I wish I was homeschooled. Anyways, someone back in the 80's told me, "Tighten for bow, loosen for warp" and it stuck with me ever since. I also did setups for a local Music-Go-Round franchise store.

This is why I absolutely love tune-o-matic bridges on non trem guitars. Nine fact, I would never buy any non trem guitar without a tune-o-matic bridge. It is just so much easier adjusting the action with just 2 screws vs messing around with each string and messing up the radius.

My best playing guitar is my cheapy "junk" Jackson. Why? Because I wasn't scared to wreck it learning to set it up myself. My more pricier LTD, Ibanez always came back from "techs" feeling terrible. Practice on a cheapy and you might be surprised!

My most irreplaceable/best playing guitar is a 1993 ESP KH-2 with serial #032. The only thing I don't love about it is the 81s, but I haven't had the heart to DiMarzio it. I really want a 20th anniversary JP Music Man, and I wanted to play a Majesty before pulling the trigger. Reasons. So I went to a local guitar store on Friday and picked up the 20th Anniversary EBMM Majesty with the gold hardware accents. My ESP has been hiding in it's case for the past 6 months, but I busted it out when I got home from the Majesty experience....and to my absolute amazement, my ESP felt better without question. By taking a little vacation from it, I was floored by just how incredible of a build that #32 is. I've had half a dozen folks try and fenagle it their way, but that's just not gonna happen. It was already sold once by an idiot....to me....and I'm gonna end that trend. I've had it since 1999, so it's not going anywhere. I still want that 20th anniversary JP6 though. I'm a sucker for a BFR, and don't have one yet. After that I need a Suhr Modern so I can be part of the cool kids club like Unkey B and Andy Woodshed.

I have seen it happen I’ve got given a guitar like that it runs the paint around the screws and the jacket come out of the guitar as well I was gonna put a bit of glue but I decided to give me a I hate first and I can’t I’m back flush and once I’ve got all the tensions on the Qatar they stayed fine without any glue someone didn’t know what they were doing and they tension there hello that out of everything and the guitar ripped it self to pieces anyhow it’s all fixed it was a Jackson dinky just a cheaper model but they’re in their cheaper models are okay some other screws and a bit on the Cheapside that’s what I find when you buy a quality all of the screws are nice screws I like the chrome is better chrome everything is just slightly better quality reasonable instead of being under reasonable thanks for the tip on the screws after all I haven’t left on any Ibanez I don’t mind the Ibanez nice to play above really prefer Gibson or Jackson or LTD I guess I just haven’t got an Ibanez anyhow if one comes along and it’s well worth it for me I’ll pick it up

Hey I went down a few tips and I just thought I add don’t adjust any pronation all your screws when the strength of tight the tension will make everything hard and you’ll destroy your tremolo the screws will dig into the metal I’m lucky I practice on a cheap guitar that I stripped out and put Caroma parts I put a cream on Nick and now it’s a really fast plane cut guitar and I change the bridge to chroma bridge because the other one was all dug into by the screws because I’ve got a bit lazy and I didn’t take the tension of the strings so if you’re new at this bike a timer for 150 bucks and practice on that

As a tech, I approve this vid. ;) With ya on Suhr’s too, as I’ve yet to ever have to do any work on their nuts/frets. But for me, and my personal guitars, my Strandberg’s have been my favs; specifically, my Per Nilsson 8 with TT frets. Game changer when in comes to intonation.

@oneox958
@oneox958 3 года назад
Setups are a fun and rewarding thing to do. And if you make a mistake, a turn in the other direction normally sorts you out. But if you're doing fretwork and aren't careful or experienced, a mistake can wind up in a gouged neck or fretboard and is much more difficult to fix. It's still worth learning, because gnarly frets are no fun, but it's best learnt on a guitar that isn't your #1.

And if you’re having troubles getting the knuckles right on the angle like they’re just going all over the joint take all the knuckles off or not all the knuckles expose the block that’s underneath the Wait those nuts sometimes come out they get loose on mine wasn’t loose I don’t know how someone must’ve pulled it apart but those nuts that hold the block on the those screws are sticking out which wasn’t letting the clinkers that hold the strings set properly so I’ve got some new screws and wildlife they fit flush and I was be able to get my angle from the strings next to the wire bar hi to up top to the low string low so make sure those screws holding the block on the wait Make sure those screws aren’t protruding because obviously if they are the saddles won’t sit properly and you’ll never get it

Great video, as always! I was wondering if you could do a video or video series on common setup issues with various guitar types? Like, setup issues that are common among LP types, Strat types, etcetera? Could be very helpful to a lot of players/viewers who may think there is something wrong with their guitar when they just need to do a minor setup adjustment. You did do some of that in this video. Mostly, I just want to know if an issue I'm having with my guitar was a common easy to fix issue. My guitar is an ESP/LTD Deluxe EC-1000 that has a low E string that sounds both dead and out of tune even after a fresh set of strings was put on. It is only the low E that has issues all the other strings sound great.

My Schecters have top quality frets and necks too. I set them close to 1mm (I don’t measure, but it’s much lower than stock), and they just play like a dream. That’s why I feel safe sticking with Schecters, especially for the price. I’m also addicted to their 24 xjumbo frets now. When you find a guitar that feels right and can be setup to your liking without a hiccup then it’s a great feeling because you know the instrument isn’t holding you back.
@normbarrows
@normbarrows Год назад
You'll find that holds true for almost any 25.5" scale length guitar with a flat fret plane, a nut that's not cut too low, and no relief when not under tension. I typically run 0.9mm action at the 24th fret with the nut slots at the fret plane, zero relief, and Ernie Ball 8's on all my guitar builds - no problem. My ESP LTD's and my Ibanez behave the same way your Schecter does. Not all guitars do without proper setup.

Hey unca Ben, talk clockwise, anti-clockwise because tightening turning right depends on whether your turning a bolt from right 9-o'clock - 3 o'clock (which is righty if you were looking at it front on) or but it would still be tightening turning left going from 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock, but both the examples above are turning the truss-rod clockwise i.e tightening it.. So it's best to say clockwise tightens the truss rod, anti-clockwise loosens the truss rod. Maybe this won't make sense to people who use a digital watch/clock, but might save someone from a snapped or threaded truss rod wondering why "lefty" is for some reason getting tighter and tighter - then - snap.

Neck relief: capo at 1st fret, fret at body joint (17th fret is common) and look for 0.010"-0.014" gap at around fret 7, 0.012" is a common "out the door" setting. Pickup height starting point is generally about 1/8" & flavor to taste from there. Again, great video, Ben!!! Keep 'em coming!!

For people with Indonesian and Korean (and I'm assuming 1000% Chinese) guitars that come with locknuts- those locknuts are almost always set pretty high out of the factory (I've personally seen almost 1/16" at the 1st fret)- so if you are having high action issues it's not always the truss or bridge action. To get a great setup the nut height has to be good, and you can have a tech sand down the nut shelf to lower the action at the first fret. I personally use the locknut itself as a sanding block, put some self-stick sandpaper on the bottom cut to the exact dimensions of the nut itself, then sand, check, sand, check, etc. When doing this I put a couple of 9 volts under my bridge to slack the strings so I don't have to keep tuning and detuning the guitar.

Maybe you can help uncle Ben, wanted to go from 10 gauge down to 7's on my LP style guitar, but the shop only had 9's so I took them, had to set up the guitar again and I dig the 9's, but here's the problem, open A is good, 12th fret A is good, but all notes between open A and 12th A are sharp, which makes all E string major & minor chords sound crap, can't find a solution, took it to a tech and he just set it up with 10's again, am I going to have this problem with 8's and how do I fix?

Sounds like the intonation needs adjusting. Compare the 12 fretted and open string and see what they look like.

I was definitely in a pickle! Thanks for the Floyd Rose setup vid too 🤘🏻

Great vid, but depending on the trem, sometimes having the claw parallel in the cavity isn't always best. I found I had to loosen the bass side spring a bit (making it asymmetrical) to allow the the trem to come back in tune after diving. Again, YMMV. My guitar is a cheap ass partscaster, not a Suhr.

Hint, if you got an evertune, skip to 15:59 Q: How does it feel to receive that Suhr extraordinary just for fancies? Is it... A) A day at the office. B) I skip Viagra today! C) They pay me to play thee - loser! D) It's a weekly treat, don't overreact! Big fan! Not fan actually, just enjoying in the most cool way.

I have watched and learned about set ups from quite a few different you tube video creators that I respect. This is the first video I have watched of yours and WOW...great detail and explanation of what you are doing, why you are doing it and how you do it! If I could make one suggestion, most of us on the beginner to intermediate level of tech work and playing have never seen or owned a Surh guitar and while it is awesome how you are in love with the brand, could you do what you do on the most common brands. I've subscribed and will start watching more.

Sorry I`m 5 months late here....... Uncle Ben, first off, as a teacher/ manager of a "Mom & Pop" music shop of 13 years, I can say your content is absolutely astounding. Our shop prides itself on not just giving you a "fish," but teaching you to catch their own, when it comes to both understanding music theory and, equally as important, INSTRUMENT MAINTENANCE. It is fantastic to see that a content creator, like yourself, follows that same line of thinking. The amount of children that begin guitar lessons at our shop with $99 and under guitars from ... well you know... and QUIT because their instrument sounds and feels terrible, is absolutely ridiculous, especially when considering the opposite outcome is a life-long relationship with music. If they, or their parents, took the time to understand basic instrument maintenance, I can't even put a number on the amount of great potential musicians who fell through the cracks because the failure to grasp such a simple concept. Here you are with a 45 minute video that could save the lives of thousands of potential musicians. Okay that was dramatic. Your lessons are fundamentally sound from the ground-up and could benefit anyone at any level of musicianship, for that I thank you. One other thing (as if this comment weren't long enough already...) you have a remix of a song at 9:40 that I know I KNOW!! Can you please, with your infinite wisdom, clue me in?!? Thank you - A satisfied lurker
@YeOldEPatT
@YeOldEPatT Год назад
@@NubsWithGuns actually we usually say our line is $200 for a full size guitar and $99 for a 3/4. The amount of toys r us, First Act, and other shit piles we see come in that require a dollar amount of maintenance that exceeds the MAP price of the guitar.... So no, it's not bs. Imagine if you bought a car, brand new, for $4000, drove it for 6 months and took it into a mechanic, who subsequently charged you $6000 in repairs..... And not sure if you're misunderstanding the fish analogy or what, but I only mentioned theory once. Not sure how that is harassment.

Bang on tutorial! I learned from a guitar tech an extra little tip. For the optimum pickup height try this... Get your pickups in the correct ball park as your video. Then do the following to one pick up at a time. Fret the last fret and pick the string. If you hear an oscillating sound then the pick up is too close, back it off a hair until that wavy oscillating sound disappears. If its not oscillating bring it closer until you hear the oscillating/magnetic pull then back it off a tiny bit until that sound goes. Repeat for the other side of the pickup followed by the other pickups. This should in theory put your pickup exactly where it should be with no magnetic pull!
