How To Make Your Own Motorcycle Radiator Guard

I could not justify the price of buying a radiator guard for my 2008 Suzuki V-Strom, but I thought having one would be a wise move.
So I went and made one instead. This is how I did it.
As promised in the video, the link to the forum thread where I found this idea. www.stromtroope...

After buying a new radiator from a high speed rock collision, this is the best video ever published via RU-vid!

G'day Mr Aus, I know this video is now a few years old but it's still very informative and I used it to make a radiator guard for my NC750x using exactly the materials you did. Works a treat - thanks. :-)

Guess what’s going on my WR450f radiators! Been struggling to think of a material to use eg perforated sheet metal or tight weave stainless mesh. That gutter guard is perfect!👌🏻Lol after thought. Hopefully gutter guard isn’t like Maccas. Gained enormous price inflation over the past 10 years! I can only buy after market guards for the wr. And they cost an absolute fortune. More than a new radiator!!
@MrAusadventure

That's awesome! Glad I could help find a solution for you. 9 and a half years later, I still have the same bike and my home made job is still holding up well. But yeah, unlikely to be as cheap now as it was then! 🤣

@MrAusadventure 10 лет назад
Thanks man. I do love a bit of good old DIY. The artist easel in the background is another recent DIY project for the wife. They were going for between $60 to $100 in the stores, that one cost me $30 and would have been closer to $20 if I had not needed to buy the right sized spade bit for drilling holes.

You sir are an ideas man. When I bought my F800 I was going to buy an aussie made radguard one for $180 then I found the one I use now the R&G and that was around the $100 mark and it is held on with little cable ties and some foam tape to cushion it against the radiator. I reckon chuck a coat of flat black and some little cable ties and no one will know the difference. Excellent video
@MrAusadventure

Being a tight arse gets the brain flowing with ideas, that's for sure! I kind of like the silver for now, but I may go for black eventually. I think I even have some flat black heat resistant paint here already. Thanks mate. :-)

Sweet DIY Mr Aus, it actually does look pretty good too. If you wanted to be real picky, a dab of black or silver nail polish over the cable ties. I like it but, shes looking snazzy

Gotta love the bunnings, how about one of those fairing guards from security mesh. They sell rolls of helmet rubber too (for the edging), no cutting tube is all. They have that spray rubber coating, want to try it out. Mate, the bugs dont care how stylish.

@MrAusadventure
@MrAusadventure 10 лет назад
Yeah a lot of people suggested painting this black, but I kind of like the silver look. Especially with the fancy stainless steel cable ties that ***** gave me! I think the matt black may end up getting chips and need repainting if I went that way. I don't know.

Interesting. The single central radiator seems prone to rock damage, but it would be less likely to break when wheelying (wheelieing? wheeling?) into a tree

Great job mate and very good "how to" vid. Wifey can't get past the fact your garage floor looks like you could eat off it! Ours doesn't even have a floor. So you managed to build it, fit it and make a video of it. I bought one for $85, have had it for a week and haven't fitted it. Could you pop down and do it? :-)
@MrAusadventure
@MrAusadventure 10 лет назад
Um, no. Not unless you want me to get there super early like 3am on Thursday and wake you and wifey up so you can film me doing it? I have had a garage with no real floor in it before and it sucked for working on bikes. Luckily I was a panel beater then so I could do it at work.

Hi great video. Would the guard be strong enough to support a 7 inch fan in front of it? Fan weigths about 900 grams. I am riding a MZ Skorpion 660 and the original fans are wornout. Thanks
@MrAusadventure

Yeah, maybe. The only issue I see with that is that I've only cable tied the guard onto the radiator, so the cable tie mounting might not hold it over time with vibrations etc.
