My Daughter found a piece of slate on the beach near where we live when she was a little girl, I've kept it for well over 20 years and I can still see her face now when she found it. I came across your channel because last week I bought a Parkside rotary tool from Lidl for use in restoring my MG, or so I thought, as after watching this I had the idea of making the slate into a house number for outside my Daughter's first house. I Just hope I don't break it! Thank you for sharing this video and your knowledge, it's lovely to see a craftsman at work.
Hi Carl, I do hope your sign making goes well, enjoy the process and take your time and I'm sure you will do a great job! Thanks for watching and for the kind comments.
I love everything that glitters so with the copper paint on the black background it's a winning combo. Thanks for the info on the metallic paints and the uv.
WoW is all i can say, got 1 of thoses rotary tools myself ( mains lead version ) and always wanted to try something with it but never got round to it, after this i'm definately gonna give it a try. I have a beginner level cricut vinyl cutting machine which i'm having a lot of fun with experimenting so this method has definatley given me some ideas. Thanks Steve.
Absolutely brilliant Steve, thanks so much for the video, I was gonna spend mega bucks on a house sign but not now. Your video is easy to follow and so straight forward. You are a star, thanks you.
Thank you Ross, I hope you enjoy making your own sign. Let us know how you get on and if you have an instagram account post a picture to #thestonecraftingworkshop I would be really pleased to see it! Thank you for the nice comments and best of luck!
Nice work. I make large address & name signs on sandstone. Like you mentioned, I do them with chisels & a hammer. I make the stencils with a little craft vinyl cutter, stick them on the rock, spray paint the rock, peel off the vinyl and start carving. It takes a long time, of course but they turn out nice. People seem to like them.
That is fantastic Steve, I have tried doing some slate engraving a bit so so but using the printable vinyl is a brilliant idea. Thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you very much for your video, next week it is available in lidl of my city, after the use that you have given it, do you recommend it? Does it have a fault after so much use? Thanks again.
Hi, anything encouraging the dust to go away is a good thing but nothing beats an extractor and wearing a good mask or better still, doing it wet! Thanks for the interesting thought!
I'm sure it would work, if you do it wet to preserve the diamond burrs but it would be harder work with a greater risk of the tool skiting over the polished face and scratching the granite! I do like working granite so if you do have a go try to think of a way of protecting the face of the granite, let me know how you get on. Best of luck!
Another great video. Can you tell me what craft knife you used? I've bought 2 and they're both useless. Also do you recommend Parkside or dremel. They are quite different in price
Hi Cath, the craft knife was from Aldi and I use a Parkside rotary tool from lidl. Much cheaper than a Dremel (the Dremel may have a longer working life) and so far mine has performed well. Cheers!
Hi Steve, I stumbled upon your site when looking for reviews of the Parkside cordless rotary tool as they are coming available again next weekend. I never thought about doing any of the engraving that you do - I want one just because a) I'm a man, and b) it's a tool I haven't yet got. I am blown away with what you are achieving and really want to give this a try. For not a lot more than the cost of the Parkside cordless I can get a Chinese mock Dremel mains rotary. What would you suggest might be the best option please, The cordless or a mains fed? If I get the rotary is it likely to be lacking in power at times?
Hi Ian, I cant advise on the cheap chinese mains tool without having tried one out though some are very poor and some are ok. The parkside cordless is very cheap, normally selling at about £17 and is a good tool. It is more bulky than a mains version cos of the battery and will lose power as the battery runs down. Though my experience is that it will work a good long time before charging. I do not notice much difference in the power output generally between the cordless and the 240volt Parkside. Perhapd buy the cordless one for now then look out for the Parkside 240v version later? Best of luck.
Hi, great video, I am hoping to attempt this, you mention you would add a link to the sticky vinyl sheet from Ebay, I can't see it, are you able to share it please ?
Hi Karine, here it is, let me know if it doesn't work ebay.to/2We6o8z Good luck with your sign! PS i am not sure live links work here so I will also put this in the info box of the video.
Hi, I'm sorry but I don't know is this is available in USA. I think you can use any metallic paint as long as you use a UV proof clear coating on top. Good luck with your projects!
