We have been using a Thor Hammer dual ear headset mic from AVE (around $300) for about a year and it has been great. Great budget solution for those who can't spring for a DPA. It has amazing gain before feedback and we pretty much run it flat with HPF most of the time and it sounds great. It was a huge upgrade for our church and worth every penny.
@@Hesbonful I bought our original Thor headsets directly from AVE, but I don’t think they are selling direct any longer. In the last month, I just bought another one from Truth Seeker Productions. I don’t buy these from Amazon, but they can be found on there just by searching “Thor hammer headset”.
We used a DPA headset mic and I agree it was great! Recently the mic end broke off so we needed a replacement. The replacement boom mic on the headset is still $500-$600. As we are a startup with no sound budget I came across a demo Que Audio QA22 for half the cost and we gambled on it. We are very pleased with the mic performance it reproduces great sound and we have less feedback issues with this mic than we did with the DPA. For any churches on a tighter budget I would recommend this option. I'm sure there are others out there as well.
Super late to comment on this as only seeing it three years later, but do you ever add a bit of reverb to the pastor's mic to get that sense of scale? I've noticed Steven Furtick's audio quality on preaching is always amazing, there's definitely some reverb on there and lots of volume.
Hey J B - Great question. I've never used reverb on a speaking mic. When you hear Furtick, I doubt they are adding reverb. What you are hearing is the ambient mics in the room. Hai there ! can you please help us - How to control our pastors microphone , where we use shure beta 58 dual and even shure sm 58 dual ...where our pastor maintain a 3-4inch Distance from the microphone and where he has a translator with him and expects a very loud sound from both their microphone to the stage monitors

You mention about how your Pastor goes from talking to shouting in a matter of seconds. My Pastor is the same way, he talks and then can shout at any moment but also can stay loud for a while. I find when he does start shouting the sound from the speakers start to distorted. Now I find if I compress his mic it won't fix the sound from coming out distorted it just squashes it. We are using a countryman mic with a sennheiser receiver. I have turned down the sensitivity on the wireless pack a lot it is about -48db which has helped but the distortion is still there. Should I keep turning down the sensitivity on the beltpack or there is something else I should do?
Hey Peter - If it is peaking at the mixer, you'll need to adjust the gain. If it is not peaking at the mixer, then yes, continue to adjust the wireless pack sensitivity until you no longer get distortion.

@@linabovm2321 There's one Behringer product I love... the X32. Other than that, Behringer products are hit and miss. I've never used the XM 1800 so I can't really speak to the quality of it. But, if it were me, I'd stick to the tride-and-true SM58.
Great stuff Kade! We use Mogan mics which run about $299. It's a single ear mic, but sounds great. We preferred them over Countryman and they were even cheaper. Couldn't see us spending $700+, although I'm sure it's a great investment.

@@GospelSimplicity Thank you! Our first three videos I used a Rode shotgun mic I had on hand and it sounded terrible. So don't be thrown off if you run across those videos. There are only three of them and then we switched to the Sennheiser.
We have a presonus studio live monitors _ Ev 15 inch monitors _ Qsc 12 inch monitors everything does the same creates only feedback and doesn't sound loud
Thanks for your video. It really helped and made everything understandable. I do however have a question. In another video of yours (for lead vocals) you mentioned that we should not compress more than 6db (showing on the gain reduction meter). On this video you mention not to compress more than 9-12db (showing on the gain reduction meter). Is this because a singer’s scenario would require a different method than a pastor’s? Also, I have another question for you. Yesterday, during my church service, My pastors mic was breaking up when he was suddenly raising his voice. I wanted to help but I did not know what to do. In your experience, what is something that can cause a mic’s sound to break up? By “break up,” I mean that it seemed like the mic would literally shut off for about .5 seconds when he would yell on the microphone, therefore, you couldn’t hear anything coming from his mic alone on the speakers for that .5 seconds. Can this be due to me OVER-compressing? I do have to admit the ATTACK/RELEASE was not set to AUTO. Understanding that according to him, we have a $500 microphone.
You are correct, Oscar. A pastor's mic can generally handle a bit more compression before sound quality starts to degrade since it is speaking instead of singing.
We are using a country man mic E6 EARSET & H6 HEADSET, The mixture we use is a Allen Heath Qu32, JBL powered speakers for output and QSC speakers for monitor. So how to make my pastors mic amazing and comfortable for him to preach...

The kind of mics that you clip to your shirt "lavalier mics" are not recommended for live scenarios. They are too prone to feedback. A headset mic is your best bet for live scenarios.
I am new to this x32 mixer I just got it but seems to can't get the 48volt mic to register what do I need to get it all sync and ready to go please... can you make a video of it if possible...???please
Countryman is a solid brand. I see that the E6 has an omnidirectional pickup pattern, which is the main difference from the DPA I recommend. As long as you are not struggling with feedback problems and you are happy with the sound of the E6, I'd say stick with it. -Kade
I also use the E6 with very good results. The DPA is a great sounding mic, but in my experience, it doesn't hold up as well as a Countryman. YMMV. FYI, you can get an E6 in omni or directional patterns. Thanks Kade for the great, to the point videos!
I've used one-ear mics and they tend to move around too much. If you position the two-ear wrap around mics correctly, your pastor shouldn't event notice it's there. But, if your pastor still doesn't like it, maybe a handheld is a better option?
I mix for a small church some weeks we have two pastors giving the word We a lapel mic we have been having a problem of the mic's picking up each other. You have any tips on how to avoid this
That's just the nature of lapel mics. To solve the problem, they would need to use handheld mics. Or headset mics that have a cardoid pickup pattern, like the DPA 4088: imp.i114863.net/b3Nmxg
Our pastors hate those style mics and prefer the lapel mics. Right now we use cheap Shure mics and receivers. I've adjusted the EQ the best I can. Our lead pastor has a deeper voice and isn't bad. Our associate pastor has a higher voice and it can sound tinny
@@collabworship oh, live we have no issue at all. It sounds great on live, it's in-house that's sketchy at times but I have eq'd them out fairly good. On live it's like hearing a regular mic in recording. Well, our pastor has a beard so it gets in the way at times and he just don't like extra things on his ear as he wears hearing aids. Also, it gets really bad feedback for some reason for them.

I've tried several budget mics and could never even get close to what the DPA brings to the table. If my budged didn't allow for the DPA, I'd have my pastor hold a mic (wireless handheld I use: amzn.to/2leQZY0). For a really low budget, even a wired handheld would be a better solution that the budget lavaliers/headsets out there. -Kade
Before adding a desser, I'd check the compressor to make sure you are not over-compressing. I have actually never needed to add a desser on a pastor's mic, but that doesn't mean it would never happen. Just a rare occurrence.
Any microphone with an omnidirectional pickup patter is going to be susceptible to feedback, which all lapels are. That's why I recommend the DPA 4088 (amzn.to/34eeams). It's a headset mic with a cardioid pickup pattern instead of omnidirectional.
@@collabworship There are lapel mics with a cardioid pattern, like the Sennheiser MKE 40. However it is a very big lapel mic and you're still going to have more problems than with a good headset mic (because it's always going to be further away from the sound source and will pick up more ambient sound than a headset)
