I'd use Composition Mode a ton if the bottom menu didn't disappear every time I open that mode (no matter what I try from guides onilne), so I can't adjust anything as needed! infuriating! Thankfully, I like the regular full screen mode just fine, but still! Why isn't this fixed yet for Windows? It's been years! X'D All the same, this was a super cool and interesting vid! I love all the themes you've come up with! So pretty! Espec that stained paper one! lol.
This is so pretty! I am begging L&L for an Android app! xD I love Scrivener but I also enjoy switching between devices (PC and tablet) and I can't do that at the moment :( I switched to Google Docs for that purpose, but I really miss Scrivener.
Hi! I've been studying storytelling by a more "plot driven" perspective with books like Story Engineering, Save the Cat! and Book Architecture, along with some character oriented books like Creating Character Arcs by K. M. Weiland. But I really liked the way you present story drawing as character oriented process, in the sense that although important, plot must be justified, and is linked to, the character arc. So, I would like to know if there are some books that you recommend to study in more depth this approach. I already pinch Story Genius and Wired for Story from your videos, and find this book: How to Write Great Characters - The Key to Your Hero's Growth and Transformation, which I think is about using the ENNEAGRAM on character creation, but I didn't find any other book, specially regarding the plot structure of external events and its connection to the character arch and its progression. I'm loving your videos and sorry for the odd English, but I'm Brazilian and an English self learner.
@Abbie Emmons Is there any way to keep the aesthetic different when working in multiple projects? If I’m working on a family comedy and a horror story at the same time I don’t want a background of bleeding skulls visible while I’m writing about a childhood fight on a playground. I haven’t found a solution or answer anywhere! 😤
I love this!! I really want to make my own theme, but for some reason whenever I pick a colour on the wheel it just doesn't change, it is stubbornly fixed on the default colour... I managed to change the binder background after a lot of tries but nothing else. Anyone recognise this problem??
I have the windows version and does anyone know how to make the character cards have a picture of said character, instead of the words? This is new to me and I can't seem to figure it out
Hi, I've recently gotten Scrivener because of your recommendation (I even used your discount code) and was messing around with the themes, but I realize that once I change the theme on one WIP, it changes it for all of them. Is there a way that I can stop that from happening? Or even save them so I don't have to re-make the aesthetic again and again for each document. I know this is an old video but I'm hoping someone can answer my question.
When I try to change my font in the binder it isn’t working. Like, I click on the fonts, but the text isn’t changing. Please someone help me idk what’s wrong
Me this morning: "When I get home from work today, I'm going to look up tutorials on how to make my scrivener aesthetic. That will help me write." Abbie: "Here's how to make your scrivener aesthetic." I swear she's on a whole new level of mind-reading!!
I love Scrivener so much, but I don't usually use composition mode, actually. I always have my outline on the side in quick ref mode, just so I can keep an eye on on it and stay on the right track. But, after watching this video, I just might give it a shot! 😉 Also, I LOVE how you can change icons to emojis! It made me WAY too excited to find out you could do that haha
Me before the video: Wow scrivener seems expensive Me now: *spends all money on scrivener* i am accomplished i have an expensive aesthetic writing tool *brain-do you know how to use this stuff* Oh sh-
Wow, that looks pretty incredible. I imagine that Composition mode, with thematically appropriate background and page aesthetics - coupled with some good writing music - would completely zone me out of everything beyond the writing.
Saw this today and customized my Scriv theme just in time for my September at home writing retreat starting tomorrow! You and your sister are seriously the best, thanks so much for all the help!!! 😍Making the writing process even more creative and fun ❤️
Yes, you can have different themes for different projects! You can save each theme by going to Preferences > Appearances > Manage > Save Theme. Manage is at the bottom left corner of the Appearance pop-up. You’ll name the theme and then it will show up under the Themes option. Set your projects to their desired themes and viola!
Abbie..love your stuff but ALL my project binders are now the SAME color. I thought I could choose different color binders for different projects. Any advice. Thanks
Me: *getting ready to dive into drafting before my baby is born* Me: *discovers this video* Me: yeah so I can totally justify spending ridiculous amounts of time on scrivener aesthetics haha this is fine Seriously though, this is gonna change my life. I'm not sorry.
There's some fantastic info in here, thank you! But the main feature I was searching for was either missed or it's not possible...do you know how to change the colour of the top toolbar?? I've been searching for ages!
JT - Just figured this out for Windows (don't know about Mac). Theme files are saved as *.scrtheme under Windows>Themes. When you change the theme file's ending to *.zip you can open it and view the contents. In it there are four files. The one you care about is*.pal (the palette). Open it with Atom or another editor and you can adjust the RGB values next to each element. This is read by the *.qss file (a lot like a CSS file for web dev). Play with those values until you're happy. Once done, drop the edited file back into the Zip folder, rename it with *.scrtheme and load it into Scrivener. The entire process is a bit of a PITA, but it worked for me. Again, this is for Scrivener - Windows version 3.12.
Have you figured out how to make sure an image is the right size for the backgrounds? When i change the picture it’s hit or miss if it will be one solid image or several blocks of the image. I hope that makes sense 🙈
How do I make the cork board look like CORK? Driving me crazy for months. Mine just looks a smooth off-white tone. I've searched and clicked everywhere I can find that says "corkboard". None even hint at making the effect. Yet every sample instruction shows cork like it's the normal, default look! But not my default look. Pleeeese show/tell me where is the button to make the corkboard look like cork! Thank you for everything, Sean
do you have pre-installed, external text ( font package) installed? example: love what your doing, but when i scroll down to follow along, i don't have "cinzel " text for notecards - anyways thanks for the great vid
I was wondering if you ever considered doing a tutorial on writing a newsletter. I was considering writing one but have no idea of how to use scrivener to accomplish this. As well as how to add pictures or informational boxes in the text. Thanks in advance.
You have a face that is very reminiscent of the statues of the Sumerian "Watchers". Blue eyes with dark curved eyebrows and a round face. Do any of your ancestors come from the vicinity of Sumer? or Do you like astronomy? I'm interested in the origin of the "Watcher" statues.
YOU'RE A LIFESAVER, ABBIE!!!! I DIDN'T KNOW SCRIVENER UPDATED. I've been waiting for it since Nanowrimo 2019 (when I won it and bought Scrivener, thanks to your videos). I would not have known that it had Scrivener 3 if it wasn't for your video. Thank you so much! Now that it's updated, I can follow your ideas to personalize it!
Abbie I have a question about the Windows version of themes. I bought your masterclass, and realized there are a decent amount of differences in the way things look aesthetically. I am not sure how to apply a background to my Scrivener without it being in composition mode like your themes show up in normal view, but I cannot seem to figure out how to make that happen. I was hoping you would be able to help with that.
hii i'm kinda late but you would have to go to file - options - appearance - main editor - fixed width background - change texture and then go for the background that you wants you have other type of background kinda similar in the appearance - corkboard - custom background and here you are !
I just upgraded from version 1 to 3 on Windows and I'm just... "I was supposed to write this thing I've been thinking all day, but you know what... pretty colors it is". :,)
@abbie emmons Would happen to know how I could save the theme I made because right now, it shows up on every single WIP I have and I wanted certain aesthetics for certain WIPS
Me: there's no point watching this, I won't change from the default light theme and solarized light *watches the whole video anyway, despite knowing I won't change anything except the composition mode background*
While you're doing this, you should also make your fiction really "writing" and your chair really "sitting" so you can get out there and make your job really "compensation"
People's Windows tips may work for me. I use Linux, which has a custom-adapted Windows version running natively (not simulating Windows). I'm optimistic.
Love the video! Quick question for anyone who might know: i have the windows version, I’m currently trialing it, but every once in a while, I’ll open up scrivener and some of my work will be gone! It will say it “recovered” some files, but they’re usually blank. It’s never been a large amount of writing, but it’s annoying to have to rewrite scenes and I don’t want it to delete something big. Hope this makes sense!
I don't know. I have windows too but it's never done this. Though, I also have mine backed up to Google docs because I'm paranoid. I'm writing a huge trilogy that's been over a decade in the making and of I lose it, I might as well just go stand in the street. Lol.
Hi! I have a question. When making a template to save, does Scrivener save the color and background image choices? I made one, but when I went to make a different one the colors hadn't saved. I'm using the Windows verrsion
I've been using Scrivener for years, and am still learning something new. Once you disappear into the Scrivener vortex, it'll be a while before you're back. It'll suddenly be a new day and you'll have no idea what happened. :D I love Scrivener, I've nixed MS Office, and I think I might open Open Office maybe 5 times a year? I use this for everything. Blogs, reviews, recipes, writing, notes, social media and for keeping track of things. Best investment ever.
I like your videos. I just wish you'd get to the point. Say "hi" and just dive in. The long intros are for people who have a lot of time to watch you before the learning starts. I'm not one of them.
Hi Abbie, hi friend! Thanks for all your great videos. This might be a Windows issue but, do Scrivener's built in dark mode themes work for you in outliner mode? In every theme (Dark, Ocean...) the text of the synopsis is so dark against a dark background that I can't see it, and I don’t mean hard to read, I mean CAN NOT SEE IT. Seems to be true in every theme. How does anybody use them? Or maybe you, great wizard of writing, have found a way to customize text colors in the Outliner like we can in the main editor?? That would be cool.
Can I use a different 'theme' for each different Binder I am working on? I am using a PC. Is this possible? Because I have several stories I'm working on and I would LOVE to have an aesthetic for each one!
@Abbie Emmons how did you get your images to be one long continuous image on your main editor (not composition mode)? Every time I try to change the texture on my main editor it just keeps repeating the image :(
Abbie, I love your videos and I love Scrivener too, but everything you've said here is exactly why I've gone back to using InDesign! 😂 Every time I opened a Scrivener document to write, I ended up doing everything BUT writing!
Question about fonts, I've read that when you submit a manuscript there is a particular font and size publishers want. I'm assuming I will have to change the font when I submit it? I do not like assuming though.
After a week of consuming your content, 1) i forwarded both your and Kate's channels to my younger cousin who wants to be a writer some day, 2) bought Scrivener for my projects, 3) had a jump-start from my rut, 4) and somehow had a lucid dream yesterday.. what nether magic is this?!
Really great stuff. You're very helpful! Now, if only Scrivener offered speech to text for Windows, it would have it all. I appreciate your videos... Just going through them...
I've got your background and then I added a viking background of a mountain lake with mist over the water! It totally helps staying in the mood of the story.
