I have hired, trained and graduated five assistants to the salon floor over my career. With each assistant, my training program evolved to maximize the assistant's productivity and profitability for my business. But just as importantly I focus on training my assistant's to be confident, independent stylist. Short and long term goals, with specific time intervals, are the hallmark of a great training program.
As a salon owner I have a unique vested interest in training my own assistant's to be long term renters. Even if you are not a salon owner, you should still consider the impact of grooming an assistant to stylist. They can be a great asset to your business during for instance maternity leave. Or if you raise your prices, which you should do regularly. They are a great referral for your clients who can't afford to continue with you.
Check out this great video for more information on my specific hairstylist assistant training!

Hey it's me, Samantha! I am a course creator, salon owner, stylist, mom & wife.
And LISTEN GIRL, I GET IT. A lot of hairstylists shy away from numbers.
We spend so much time being artists, that we’re not aware of what comes in and what goes out. But we need to know how to do the numbers better if we want to have a thriving, successful business.
And that’s why I started A Wealthy Hairstylist.
To help stylists like you achieve more wealth by becoming financially savvy and ultimately more profitable. As hairstylists, we aren't taught how to measure profitability or track our growth, so we don’t know where we’ve been and where we are now. And I think that’s ridiculous. It’s time to learn those skills so we can create long-term wealth, feel confident in our financials, and craft a business we love.
Let’s get you started on your journey to wealth today.

I just hired my newest assistant a couple weeks ago. I actually have my old assistant training the newest one for six weeks. While this added cost can seem redundant it is crucial to a smooth transition. Let me know if you have any questions. I am always here to help!

Hi, I have been in the industry for 25+ years and have had a few assistants here and there. I would love to really invest in an assistant program for my salon. I would like to get my hands on an actual system that could help in the process, something that would help me be organized and strategic. I loved your approach and all the info you shared, please let me know if you have any suggestions. My salon is in Northern California. Thank you for your time Christy

I know there are a number of hairstylists in your area that do provide a business coaching program. They would be able to setup a specific assistant program for you. Hope this helps!

I have always paid an assistant as a contractor, not an employee. They get a competitive hourly rate plus a weekly cash tip out. I pay them directly through my business account using Zelle. I guess you could also just write them a business check each week. Hope this helps! Thanks for tuning in!

Is your assistant paid as w2 or independent contractor ?

My assistant is paid as an independent contractor. I find it much easier and less expensive to pay assistants this way. Great question!

How much do you pay your assistant or full time employee
@SamanthaPiercy
@SamanthaPiercy 2 года назад
I pay a competitive hourly rate for Southern California plus a tip out at the end of each week. As a side note, because my assistant is not an W2 employee I am not required to pay minimum wage. I figure there is a lot of value to my education program, access to clients and a weekly tip out. Hope this helps!

How much do you pay your assistant?
@SamanthaPiercy

This is a difficult question to answer because it is dependent on specific regional factors such as minimum wage. In general, I pay above minimum wage with an additional tip out weekly. Hope that helps!

I've done both. You just need to figure out which one is best for your business.
