We also use diatomaceous earth to help keep any flys or mites/fleas away or killed by sprinkling a good dusting over the bedding and let sit all day while the goats are out .
That is pretty much what I do for my goats. I put down PDZ on dirt then add pine shavings as well. I live in Idaho so in the winter where they bed down I add 6 inches of straw on top of the shavings to give them a buffer from the cold ground since I dont have raised beds for them. Then I kind of spot clean every day, Just clean up poop that it easy to scoop but more importantly pull up the pine shavings that are urine soaked. Once a month I completely clean goat barn out and let the dirt dry then repeat. Its a lot more work in the winter than summer for sure but only way I have found to keep the ammonia down when they spend 12 hours or more a day in the barn in winter months.
I swap out usually 1 to 3 months, it’s a function on the size of the stall and depth of the bedding. The PDZ, I put enough down to cover most of the stall.
I’d say it’s a function of your bedding depth, size of stall, and the number of goats. I wait until the stall looks rank or smells. Ranges from 1 to 3 months. The deeper the bedding, the longer you can go without changing.
