I rarely hear anybody talking about this, but meditation did this automatically for me. About 3 or 4 months after starting to meditate, I realized I hadn't watched TV, or any news in months. I remember thinking...huh, that's weird. It's now 3 years later, and that has continued. I only watched 3 movies last year, and 2 of them were holiday movies. This wasn't something I did consciously, like trying to avoid those things. They just stopped with no effort or consideration. I used to watch thriller, horror, & sci-fi movies and TV shows, and quite a bit of documentaries and news related interviews on youtube, but that all came to a screeching halt when I started meditating. Anybody with any kind of addiction whatsoever might want to really consider starting to meditate, rather than trying to white-knuckle their addiction, forcing themselves to abstain from their addiction through sheer ego will.
