"the limits of our mind are the limits of our reality"... so profoundly put. feeling so inspired by roxie and am grateful you introduced me to her with your thoughtful questions that allowed me to rise above my initial skepticism!

I enjoyed this episode so much, I’ll have to pick up her book! If Andy was inspired by the positive outlook & was interested in the science-y aspect of energy & quantum physics, he may enjoy learning from Joe Dispenza. His work has been quite influential in my understanding of the evidence behind manifestation :)

My husband and I are planning to move to Santander, Spain in a few years. I have so many fears. This is just what I needed to hear. Change is scary. I"m afraid I won't be able to speak the language, navigate the tax codes, find the right abode, ship my dog without losing him in some random airport. There are so many things I worry about.
@heidil851

You can do it Kim. My husband and I moved to Thailand 7 years ago without speaking the language, understanding tax, or anything else. We arrived in Bangkok on new year's eve amidst fireworks and I broke down in floods of tears wondering what on earth we'd done, feeling overwhelmed and positively uncelebratory. We ended up living there for 5 years and it was the best decision ever. I'm so glad we had the experience before we had children. I'm beyond grateful that we didn't chicken out and spend all those years still in our same flat in London. Our memories and friends from those years are priceless. Vamos! :)

This reminded me of the 70s Christian practice of "name it, claim it", which was entirely within the prosperity gospel narrative. In a universe where life does the heavy lifting for us, we cannot presume ANY "system" will allow us to bend that heavy lifting on behalf of ourselves. The problem is that ego can easily flip this to self-centeredness, and that's where many stumble. We simply don't have the power to flip things to our own benefit; and "manifesting" can easily fall into the trap of believing that we can. Finally, this is largely a right brain concept, whereas left brainers need some form of process or system in order to get things done. It's very anti-intuitive to left brainers, and I applaud the author for trying to help everybody understand. Great show.

I've always said that manifesting is the act of psyching yourself up or psyching yourself out. Manifesting is basically creating your plan but also believing that you have worth enough to do this.

Ever since I learned about manifestation and started to practice it I have to say, this talk comes closest to teaching what I learned way back when from the likes of Bob Proctor and others from the book and movie “The Secret.” Bravo, I can attest to the validity. Big takeaway, we fuel our visions with our emotions, hence why self awareness is so important…always observing our state of mind. We can choose which thoughts we want to feed…

I think it’s because she’s so pretty that she’s gotten the huge acclaim. I appreciate that you had her on discussing this topic, but she is not saying anything new. That is not to put her down because I’m sure her book is valuable. This information is no secret, it is available to all of us if you spend enough time in silence, in nature, or whatever way you have of going within. Decades ago, that was the only way to access this information and it is still the best way - through experience. With everyone talking about it, it can get distorted, and it can lead people to simply follow instructions rather than Settling into themselves with meditation, etc. and finding it on their own. There is a line of this truth that goes through absolutely every spiritual tradition. Religions have greatly distorted things and made people believe that this one or the other is the only way: Like you have to follow Catholicism or Islam etc., if you want to go to heaven. I would just like to emphasize that silence and alone time is crucial. I don’t hear her saying that. What I hear her saying is to buy her book.

The question on realism isn't just about the critics' lack of imagination tho. Realism is also about the negative impact from the manifestation of your ideas. The frustration I feel is that most manifestation followers do not talk about the dark side of manifestation. Life is bittersweet, so it's dangerous when you believe that you can manifest ALL the pleasant things you want (which are usually self-fulfilling regardless of its impact even on others) is conducive to producing egotistic, entitled, fragile idiots whether or not manifestation preachers want to acknowledge it. There is an entire system at play here and you are a mini-micro part of the system. If you're lucky, things will go great for you for a short time and then kaboom! You feel burnt out, your self-esteem crumbles, and you're severely depressed bc your goals aren't met and/or you did not anticipate the negative impact from your actions either onto yourself or others then you question how this could be happening bc it's not supposed to go this way right? It's supposed to be all positive, right? Wrong. That's life. Manifestion and delusional thinking are useful when you're ruminating and feeling stuck, but it needs a check and balance system otherwise it produces more catastrophe than good.

I think it's great that the focus of this manifestation discussion is on self-worth, reflecting on what we want from our lives, striving for our goals, and avoiding being excessively defeatist! I definitely think that these practices can help us improve our quality of life. Also, to my knowledge, the neuroscience points are pretty reasonable and supported by evidence: (1) that your attention will tend to be tuned to sensory information that is relevant to you based on previous experience/context, (2) that mental rehearsal can be helpful, for example, if you can't actually rehearse something in practice. As I'm sure Dear Shandy knows, however, the quantum physics discussion of vibrations makes no sense. These are invented claims that start from rather specific and well-defined observations from science (e.g., that particles vibrate), and links them tenuously to social and psychological ideas through vague analogies. They aren't even particularly interpretable, because there's no rigor in how the scientific terms are used. However, that's ok! We don't need some sort of quantum explanation. In my opinion, we would do better to derive ideas about how to improve our quality of life from well-supported psychological findings about human tendencies and behaviors, e.g., looking into what behaviors, empirically, are more common in people who report higher degrees of life satisfaction, resilience, etc. (while controlling for external factors...). And I do want to say that if you are someone who likes to find comfort in unscientific claims, whether they are concretely true or not, I do understand, even though that it isn't how I like to approach things. My suggestion would just be to use the following litmus test: Would taking this claim into account lead me to make a decision I wouldn't otherwise make? If so, I strongly suggest taking another look with your skeptical lenses on. Otherwise, if it just sort of tips the balance, or encourages you in a decision, then it seems to me that it's probably pretty harmless. Similarly, please do be careful of accidentally misleading someone who might take the claim you're sharing far too seriously.
@audreyg1357
@audreyg1357 Год назад
I thought it was pretty obvious by the debrief that Shandy didn't believe in the "science" but were being respectful to their guest.
@colleen.g
@colleen.g Год назад
@@audreyg1357 Fair enough. But some people will think that the "science" lends credibility and buy into harmful ideas. Not everyone discussing manifestation is as balanced as Deae Shandy's guest. Some will claim that everything is within each individual's power to control. That bad things that happen to you by misfortune are somehow your fault... vibrationally (and yeah, they are often selling something...) So I go beyond the "believe it if you want" approach to "take these claims as interesting ideas to test out, but keep your skeptic's lens nearby when the claims start getting a bit wild."

Offender here. Legit just last night. In my defense, we didn’t have this in the 80’s so I blame the younger people bc they’re out there using the term like you said to manifest them to pass the test etc. So, no wonder I told my gf that I manifested my husband into going to get our take out which he originally said no and my charms did not work. And I did not want to cook. So I got up to get ready and he comes in and said he’ll go. Here it was a span of 20 minutes. So I’m dying now that I realize what manifesting actually means 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
@Lulu-kt6gr
@Lulu-kt6gr Год назад
I completely agree that it takes action along with the manifesting mindset in order to create things in your life. I do think there’s more to it than that though. I think there is an element of “magic”, meaning the subconscious mind is part of a greater mind that is actually directing people toward the attainment of their goals. I don’t know what this greater mind is exactly but I do think that everything is energy and when you break things up into the very smallest particles, if there is a smallest particle, you get energy that is malleable per a person’s will and I do believe if one is aligned enough, like Jesus for instance, it would be feasible to even create miracles like he did with the power of one’s mind. A person like Jesus is rare however and that’s why I think it is rare that people on the planet can just think things into existence but I do think on a metaphysical level that it is possible. It is all fascinating and it seems like people’s awareness of these spiritual/physical ideas is rapidly accelerating with each passing year. Thank you for your conversation!

The "Belinda Blinks" erotic fiction seriously is some of the most poorly written literature imaginable (sorry, Rocky) and that is precisely the reason that the 'My Dad Wrote A Porno' podcast is so successful! In your (virtual) face, Andy. Also, the entire Transformers series. Michael Bay. Enough said.
