In this video I show you How to Manually Backup & Restore WordPress Database, Files & Folders Without any WordPress Backup Plugins.
WordPress Backup Plugins are great and easy to use but sometimes you want to manually back everything up or just want to have redundant backups to go along with the ones created by your backup plugin of choice.
Redundancy is important because backups can fail so by having more than one, you give yourself a layer of security and peace of mind.
In this video I show you the process of using SSH to create your Secure SSH Keys and I show you how to use FileZilla which is a free FTP program. I also show you how to use SFTP which is a secure way of transferring your files to and from your web server in an encrypted way. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and SFTP means Secure File Transfer Protocol.
Having a good backup of your WordPress Website is extremely important. It is helpful when you want to migrate your website to a new server or if your website has been hacked and you need to restore from a clean backup.
In the video I use FileZilla which is a free FTP Program and phpmyadmin which you can use to backup your WordPress database. This will give you a full WordPress Backup.

I've finally found a simple manual way to do a WP backup, thank you! All the other tutorials use extra software/plugins, and some are even trying to sell stuff to you. This is the most simple and direct way.

I need to restore my database but need to keep my woocommerce orders. How can I do this? I am not sure what tables to keep or how to import just a few tables of the new version to the old version I need to run. Does that make sense?

The domain I had on this website ended and I bought another one, now I wanted to upload the backup I have from the old site to make a new one, basically I just want to change the domain but I can't do it. Can you help please!

Don´t you forget to mention that also the DB Tabel option (siteurl, home) and the file wp-config.php (DB name, DB user, etc.) must be adjusted?

Thank you for the video. Is it the same process if you want to upload offline works (localhost) to the LIVE site? My question is about permalink. Will it be staying OK?

Hi Jasmin. This is a backup solution. You could migrate the files and the database and all should work as long as nothing is changing with the domain name. If you’re migrating from local host to a live site, then there will be differences in the URL’s. I have several videos that could be helpful. One is on the WordPress database which includes code snippets. And another is a demo of the Duplicator Plugin for easy migration. Thanks for watching.

Very useful information, thank you! Can I do the backup without filezilla directly on cpanel? Does it have any cons besides time?
@PixemWeb
@PixemWeb 3 года назад
With cpanel you can do backups too. It’s a different process but I’m sure they have some way to possibly zip up files and download them. Nowadays I just use the command line and ssh into my server. I’ll do some videos on how to use CLI for backups and server management.

I have been learning a lot in the past few weeks from your tutorials and from other sources mainly about web hosting, servers, word-press, backups, site migrations and more. Now, I've set up a vps with all of the required parts to run / host WordPress with Nginx. I've tested it on fresh WordPress install and some themes and it is sooo much faster then my old shared hosting and as a bonus it works out cheaper. Anyway, I plan to move one of the websites completely to the new server with minimal downtime. What would be the best way to approach this? I'm thinking: 1. prepare directories for the site on the server 2. create database for WordPress 3. import backed-up WordPress database 4. copy full backup of WordPress files to the server 5. configure nginx and ssl certificates 6. configure dns / point the domain to new server - in step 4 would it be better to copy over clean latest WordPress installation files and then just replace wp-content folder from the backup? any other thoughts on this approach?

Awesome, a vps is often going to outperform shared hosting. I like Linode and Digital Ocean but there are many options out there to choose from. You could do this following the approach you outlined or you can use the Duplicator Plugin which I recently uploaded a video going over the steps involved on a live website for real world results. If you want to go the manual approach, then what you outlined is a good strategy. As for the core files, you could either do a clean install and make sure to use the proper credentials in your wp-config file as well as migrating your wp-content folder. Also make sure your pre-fix is the same for the database as in your wp-config file. As for the SSL Certs, use Let's Encrypt which is free.
@pablo6570
@pablo6570 6 лет назад
Great, thanks! I'm using Digital Ocean and so far it has been great (also learned a lot in the process of installing and configuring web server). I will check you video on Duplicator Plugin in a moment to see if that may be a good option but I'm happy to do it manually. Thanks again for reply and pointers on database and credentials config (useful to remember). I've been using NameCheap ssl which are "pocket change cheap" but I will check out Let's Encrypt out of curiosity.

Cool, Digital Ocean has a lot of good documentation on setting up Let’s Encrypt SSL. I used to pay for certs for all my sites but that gets costly. The benefit of the vps is more control, security and performance. Have fun and let me know if there’s any video I should create.

Could you help me? I lost my adsense code from header.php file. That happened because off theme update. Plzz tell me how to get that back. I didn't back up the files also. plzz help.
@PixemWeb
@PixemWeb 6 лет назад
Ok. The best way to get your Adsense code is to log into your Google Adsense Account and retrieve it from there. You can also try switching the theme to a default theme. Did you use a plugin to add your code or did you insert it via the current theme?
@uditrathi8536
@uditrathi8536 6 лет назад
Thanks for the quick answer. I didn't use any plugin and put the code in my current theme's header.php file. I lost it after updating the theme. I don't know where the option is to retrieve it from adsense account now. still ads are visible on by website. And I got a code in my g mail account when applied for adsense. is that the same ? can I use that?

what if I change the domain and I want to restore
@PixemWeb

You would have to run a search and replace either with a plugin, or via the database. I’ll put that on my list of videos to make. Thanks for the idea.

I have tried to backup my food blog using your very well described protocol. For some reason I am unable to complete it. After filling in File Manager on FileZilla and pressing "Connect" I am not asked to fill in a password (which is strange, how could it connect to the server without a password?) and instead it tries and fails to connect to the server. Than I tried to use "Quick connect" feature on Filezilla screen and after filling in host, username and password (I am assuming that the password that is required is access password for the blog on the server?) I get the message that "server certificate is unknown". Under the "session details" it is highlighted in red " Host:sweetthought.ca:21-Host name does not match certificate". I would appreciate if you could direct me what to look for to resolve this issue. Thank you very much

You would need the password for your web server which is different than your website. If you’re using cpanel, it’s most likely that password. Go to your web hosting account, then navigate to your control panel, then there should be a section for ftp. You should be able to create a new ftp account if needed or retrieve your info from there. Hope this helps.

@@PixemWeb I created a new ftp account and used a server password as you suggested, and that seem to work! How did making a new ftp account help? This was a great assistance, thank you very much for your quick response!
@PixemWeb
@PixemWeb 5 лет назад
Because your server is always listening for incoming traffic and when someone tries to access private information, credentials are required. Your new ftp account is like a new user account and is granted access once authenticated. Always make sure your credentials are strong. Weak passwords make your server vulnerable. I always recommend passwords over 20 characters, use a password manager and ideally, use sftp vs ftp. I should create an updated video.
