This was worth watching just for the advice on thumb tension and neck grip alone. Maybe it's just me that's not grasped it (yes, bad pun) but I've never seen anyone highlight so clearly the thumb-tensed-back versus thumb-curled-in positions. I suspect lots of us self taught guitarists have confused the tension felt in the former for what is actually pretty poor compressive force on the back of the neck. Totally fundamental. Thank you sir!

I know this video is a few years old, but I just wanted to say thanks for pointing out the thumb curvature!!! Nobody else that I've watched talks about this, and after I switched to curving my thumb toward the neck instead of away, I am seeing some great progress. Uncomfortable at first of course, and had to toughen up the corner of my thumb by the nail, but this is clearly the proper method, much stronger that way as you point out. Not really a shredder, but we all want to play faster. Thanks again, this is a big deal!!!

It is amazing how John Petrucci changed the guitar world. I bought "Rock Discipline" when it came out and now i realize how many people did the same. In all my years of playing, watching several different Clinics and DVD's from amazing players,i think Petrucci's is the best.

What's brilliant here is that you up the tempo in parts so you can hear how it changes from individual notes to a proper run. A lot of times it can be hard to hear what the final thing should be like

Also if anyone is interested in modern metal riffing to go along with the lead stuff check out Olly Steele’s stuff on there too, he’s an absolute beast.

Wow, your advice on holding the neck was spot on. My fretting hand would get tired and cramp, and it was because I was holding my neck with the thumb bent backwards, just like you said. I tried the "C" clamp and I can already feel the improvement. Amazing, so glad I watched this. Great lessons too, will be checking out your stuff for sure!

Late to the game as usual, but I just thought I'd say that this is a really useful video, and I think it shows how complex and nuanced the art of fast picking is. I agree with everything he says, and I think you can see that it's an intention to pick from the wrist, but it's impossible to completely isolate that from articulating the fingers.. fingers have small, fast twitch muscles. In order to pic fast you have to pick light and fret light as well. And at the very least, if you're picking from the wrist, your fingers need to provide just the right amount of resistance, or the pick wouldn't move through the string. So I'd say it's a combined motion, but definitely focus on the picking from the wrist and the fingers will learn what to do. Fantastic video. Will definitely be trying these exercises..

I agree about the thumb position. I get lots of hand cramps and that's why. Sadly I was born with a thumb that only bends backward so it's just something I have to live with (although women tell me I give the best massages so it's not all bad). Great technique. That's about as smooth as I've heard and it's with no apparent effort. Going to have to start watching more of your channel.

@@TheRPGentleman No different than people with small hands learning to play around limitations. I had a friend in Chicago who was one of the top bass players in the city. He was Asian and had TINY hands. But the guy could play circles around me on bass (and probably play as fast on bass as I could on guitar). One show he asked if I wanted to jump in for a song and then warned me he intentionally tunes his bass down a step and transposes everything through the show just to keep it fun.....so I thanked him and said that was beyond my meager skills, then went back behind the soundboard where I belonged.

I swear it's safe to assume any jacked guy is going to be giving credible advice on the guitar. The people that don't exercise wouldn't understand the similarities between the two, but the same exact methodology for making gains in the gym can be applied to making gains on the guitar. Keeping your fretting hand in the classical guitar position is the best thing you can do, it allows you to dance on your finger tips instead of flubbing them around the board with no accuracy or consistency.

@williamtomlinson4322
@williamtomlinson4322 4 года назад
@@brandon_945 I would consider myself a pretty advanced guitarist but I mainly play alone, have never really practised to a metronome before. Off the bat I could do about 100 in short bursts but would fall out of sync when trying to maintain it. Had to bring it down to 60 16ths (which felt painfully slow) and work my way back up, currently at 110 16ths comfortably with perfect economy and articulation. Really good exercise for increasing hand synchronisation and timing which were probably my weakest points. Would highly recommend, although as a novice I think you'd probably be better off learning scales and arpeggios tbh - to your discretion. I don't see the point in learning to play fast if you don't know what to play - I started learning stuff like this because my hands couldn't keep up with my head.

Intervals are AMAZING for your playing. Don't just play SLOW, it's a good tip but incomplete most of the time. People forget to say practice slowly at FIRST and build your way up, but also PUSH your extremes to the max with practice also. Get out of comfort zone and make SURE you're NOT going ANY faster, until EVERYTHING is analyzed and perfect. Isolate ANY mistakes or flaws and work on them individually. Build your own exercises.

I think wrist motion has to do with the forearm position. If it's parallel to the guitar body it's ok with mostly wrist but if it's tend to be closer to your ribs it guides the hand to to the wrist forearm "drilling" motion... guitar is a mimetic organ. Just watch bouzouki players or middle East related organs picking technique wise. Yes I'm a fan of John Petrucci technique among others andby the way beautiful guitar brother! Keep it cool and heavy!
