I don't get why you wouldn't step the back foot back first and then go to the right. Because when you pull your front foot back you are more off-balance

how would you go about doing it towards the left side?

not what a L step is

Well, there *is* a kind of an inverted L-step you can do to the left - but it is much less common because it is defensibly irresponsible. You would only really do it if you hit the opponent hard, ideally with a left, and he staggered back, or skittered back fast to get out of range. Much better in this situation to do a quick shuffle forward while maintaining the proper stance. But you could instead skip your right foot up fast to just behind & beside your lead foot then step forward fast with the lead foot. Thus cancelling out the distance the opponent opened by retreating and putting you right in range to hit him again a split second faster than the shuffle forward would do. You would only do this if you were totally in control of the fight and relatively unconcerned about anything coming back. I wouldn't really recommend it since your balance won't be optimal mid-step and you might get hit with a very hard counter. It is a move in boxing, but not one I would suggest ever trying in anything other than shadow boxing.

What is the diffence between doing the L-step and simply moving the right foot to the right and then the left one? The end result seems to be the same.

your body moves back first outside range in a neutral 50/50 stance then takes a lateral position, rather than the other way around. Bringing in your feet together underneath your base raises your center of gravity as well and makes it easier to step in any direction.

The difference is that with the L- Step you don’t actually cover any ground, you’re basically in the same spot you were before, plus you took yourself out of your fighting stance by bringing your feet together.

@@assanewade7622True. The L step is just fancy footwork with no real point. Especially when you don't really go anywhere. You can look up fights with guys at the highest level use the L step and go absolutely no where
