Were you recently impacted by a disaster? Here are four actions you can take during the FEMA application and appeals process that may help you to increase and maximize your award amount.
Action 1: Appeal any determination letter you don’t agree with, especially if you were denied or under-awarded.
Action 2: Request a reinspection if you feel that FEMA’s initial inspection was not thorough or complete.
Action 3: Apply to FEMA within 15 days following the disaster. If you apply within this timeframe, FEMA may qualify you for Critical Needs Assistance (CNA). These funds may be spent on food, water, first aid, prescriptions, infant formula, diapers, medical supplies and equipment, personal hygiene items, fuel, and much more.
Action 4: Use your FEMA award for the purposes described in the determination letter. A FEMA award is a grant and does not have to be repaid if spent appropriately. Keep all receipts in case FEMA conducts an audit.
