Greg, just put a level on your 2x6 and level it accordingly. You can even pitch it for drainage. I've set concrete forms. A torpedo level, a 2' or 4' level works great! Kudos for your podcast!

Your existing beds have inherently terraced the space. Because the paths between the beds are narrow, it would be relatively low-cost to also terrace the paths by installing small segments of step in a few strategic locations between beds (you need robust material for this - I see people giving away free pavers on kijiji all the time). Contiguity of sloped path is advantageous for moving sleds and wheelbarrows, but perfectly level terraces are best for comfort and runoff control. There is a kind of phase-shift in comfort and manageability when you get the ground to within epsilon of level: no subtle imbalanced stresses on the hips and ankles, no pooling of mud and mulch in the valleys, water moves straight down into the soil without erosion. In my garden I've become a terrace totalitarian.
