MEIKYO - SLOW & FAST | Shōtōkan Karate Kata
The original form of Meikyō was called "Rōhai". In the style Wadō-ryū this original form is still practiced today, in Shōrin-ryū and Shitō-ryū even a series of three Kata.
The name "Bright Mirror" is probably due to the large circular movement at the beginning of the Kata. Later on it appears twice and is supposed to symbolize the cleaning of a mirror or the smoothing of a water surface to be able to reflect in it.
As an advanced Kata, Meikyō leads back to various basic techniques that can already be found in the Heian kata. This indicates that one should never stop learning and should not neglect the techniques one has learned initially.
Meikyō contains only one Kiai, rarely another Kiai is put on the Mikazuki geri. Meikyō and Wankan are the only Kata in Shōtōkan that do not include two Kiai.
Very demanding is the technique that distinguishes Meikyō: the triangular jump. A Jōdan attack is fended off, one jumps slightly sideways to the front to attack the opponent in the jump with an elbow strike and then lands - at a safe distance - behind him. This technique requires not only good bounce, but also body control to perform the elbow strike with Kime while the legs are bent. Only an exact landing allows the Karateka to end at the point where he started.

MEIKYO - LANGSAM & SCHNELL | Shōtōkan Karate Kata
Die ursprüngliche Form des Meikyō wurde "Rōhai" genannt. Im Stil Wadō-ryū wird diese ursprüngliche Form noch heute praktiziert, in Shōrin-ryū und Shitō-ryū sogar eine Serie von drei Kata.
Der Name "Helles Spiegelbild" ist vermutlich auf die große Kreisbewegung zu Beginn der Kata zurückzuführen. Sie taucht später zweimal auf und soll die Reinigung eines Spiegels oder das Glätten einer Wasseroberfläche symbolisieren, um sich darin spiegeln zu können.
Als fortgeschrittene Kata führt Meikyō auf verschiedene Grundtechniken zurück, die bereits in der Heian-Kata zu finden sind. Dies zeigt, dass man nie aufhören sollte zu lernen und die Techniken, die man anfangs gelernt hat, nicht vernachlässigen sollte.
Meikyō enthält nur ein Kiai, selten wird ein weiteres Kiai auf die Mikazuki geri gelegt. Meikyō und Wankan sind die einzigen Kata im Shōtōkan, die nicht zwei Kiai enthalten.
Sehr anspruchsvoll ist die Technik, die Meikyō auszeichnet: der Dreieckssprung. Ein Jōdan-Angriff wird abgewehrt, man springt leicht seitlich nach vorne, um den Gegner im Sprung mit einem Ellbogenschlag anzugreifen und landet dann - in sicherer Entfernung - hinter ihm. Diese Technik erfordert nicht nur eine gute Sprungkraft, sondern auch Körperbeherrschung, um den Ellenbogenschlag mit Kime bei angewinkelten Beinen auszuführen. Nur eine exakte Landung erlaubt es dem Karateka, an dem Punkt zu enden, an dem er begonnen hat.
