I usually would memorize one chapter, and I planned to memorize one book of Bible in the future. I used the way that Andy Davis recommended. 1. I choose my chapter 2. At the first verse, I would look at the verse and read it 10 times 3. After that, I would close and recite it 10 times. 4. Then, leave it. 5. Next day, I come back and recite 10 times the same verse again (look at the verse if I forgot) 6. Then, continue the same step from 2-4 with the next verse. 7. Next day, recite the second verse 10 times 8. Then, I'll combine the first verse and second verse (with the reference to the Book and Chapter and Verse) 9. Then, continue the third verse and continue to repeat the cycle above 10. After I completed the whole chapter, for the next 100 days, I'll continue to recite the whole chapter/book That's how I memorize Scripture. I had memorized Isaiah 53, Psalm 32, Proverbs 5, Psalm 23, Galatians 5:22-23, 1 John 1:9, John 3:16, Hebrews 4:14-16. Currently are memorizing Psalm 103.

Great video! I’ve memorized Romans chapters 1-2, Philippians chapter 1, Mark chapter 1, and Psalms 1,19, and 100. I’ve had great success with the John Piper method: I write the verse 10 times, read it 10 times, then say it memorized 10 times. Then add another the next day, making sure to link it to past verses after memorizing.

Cantillation is a powerful way of memorizing Scripture. How many times have we heard a song from way back and instantly begin singing along? We may have not heard the song for many years yet somehow instantly recalled the lyrics. Powerful.

I agree. The KJV, in particular, lends itself to song. I can find a beat for pretty much any verse or passage and set it some kind of a melody. I think the KJ translators kept meter in mind when they chose their wording.

I have been memorizing scriptures and meditating on them often since 1977. The key for me to retain all the verses I've put to memory is to review about 75 per day. I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great treasure. Psalm 119:162

Charlotte Mason method. Get note cards, a box and dividers. You will set up the dividers into daily, odd and even, days of the week then monthly. And you just cycle through. We read at each meal. You start with daily then once its memorized move it to the odd even section abd depending on if its an odd or even day you will read those cards on the odd or even days. Then weekly then monthly. That way you will consistently refer back. We do this with our own memorization choices, the verses our kids learn in chuch, we do this method with some adjustments when it comes to memorizing history facts, math facts. We homeschool so this has worked well for us. For the scripture memory verses I bought a beautiful wooden box that I simply keep either on or next to the kitchen table, that way it's always there to remind us and it's not one of those plastic boxes from Walmart. We use the plastic boxes for our school ones.

I learned about bible memorization from a young man who was a member of the Navigator. organization. It stuck with me. I would write bible verses on a 3x5 or 4x6 card and carry them around with me. I would review the verses several times a day. It also benefited me in that I was meditating on scripture. It was my daily devotional time.

I agree with the comment about learning Bible Verses via song. That seems to write them, so to speak, in our hearts rather than on our hearts. Also, if we haven't sung the songs in a while...well, when we get back to singing them they, i think, come back reasonably quick. Thanks for listening. 1 John 4:10,11

Great topic! Another method I recently heard about is memorizing one short phrase from each chapter as a memory jogger, for example: Genesis 1 - Creation. Genesis 2 - Garden. Genesis 3 - Fall Genesis 4 - Cain & Abel. Genesis 5 - Generations of Adam. Genesis 6 - Fallen angels. Genesis 7 - The flood.

Great video, love memorizing Scripture too. About 2 years ago it was on my heart to start memorizing large portions of the Bible. I started using an app called, Versify and started practicing reciting my verses while driving. Praise God, I have since memorized the book of Jude, Revelation chapter 1, Zachariah chapter 3, Matthew 5:1-12, Luke 24:1-12, Psalm chapter 150 and Isaiah chapter 53. I just started memorizing Colossians chapter 1. I’m not positive yet, but I’m leaning towards memorizing the whole book of Colossians.

I use a dry-erase board. I write out the whole scripture and address. Then I read it until I am ready to erase a word and replace that word with a line. Then I repeat. I read it, erase a word, replace it with a line, and read again. Read, erase, replace, read, erase, replace.. Before you know it, you can quote it. I hope this blesses.

I started memorising scripture a few months ago. I managed to get the first 20 (7 more to go!) scriptures of James 1 as well as Psalm 23. And that one proverb that starts like "go to the ant, you slugged!" Lol. Not like, a lot, really. But I'm really proud of my progress. Amazing how much you can link across the rest of scripture from memorising these verses alone. I teach children. I am not a highly academic/or a person with high level thinking... My job requires a LOT of planning and paper work. It's mentally and emotionally exhausting. I say all that I say that it's possible to do fifteen minutes a day + any time you're driving or travelling or waiting in a doctor's room etc. I make a grid that is five boxes across. Each box has one scripture in it, but only the first letter and punctuation. It's enough to remind you of tricky words without looking at the scripture outright. I'd start looking at the Bible, and once I know it I move onto the grid to prompt, and then away from it entirely. I count the verses on my fingers to help me keep track. This method is mostly visual. Its working for me!

I came to Jesus late in life (@52 y/o) when my memory was already going downhill. What I do is read the verse 10x. Write it on scratch paper 10x. And then recite it 10x. This includes the verse reference. Throughout the week I will recite it to myself so that it really solidifies in my brain. I periodically review the verses (I have them in a file card box. I too am Gen X) I have memorized to keep them fresh in my mind so as not to forget them. This is what works for me. I can’t wait until I retire later this year so I can be more consistent in learning a new verse a week. 🙂 I love, Love, LOVE the little Bible diagram trick you showed and will definitely be incorporating that in the future. Thank you and bless you for all that you do Pastor Matt!!

Greetings Pastor Matthew. At home with my kids we play every night before the reading of the Word, the old fashion Sword Drill. Sometimes I give a clue of the verse and they have to tell me the "address" (reference location). Sometimes I quote the verse. Then we read the verse in a sandwich way. Address/verse/address... After a couple months the kids, and my wife and I, know by heart the verse and it's location. For this we need a physical Bible for sure. Blessings to the community.

I don’t remember whole chapters, but I remember sections, more specifically I remember key things/themes (what is being taught), and this is helpful to use as an input prompt into Chat GPT to find the passage. It helps to completely engulf yourself in the word. I only listen to Christian music. Psalms being sung by Brian Sauve. Rap music by various artists (Christcentric, Military Mindset, Doctrynal, Timothy Brindle). The Psalms played in metal by Tim Bushong. Every night I fall asleep listening to the Brian Sauve singing the Psalms. And listening to a sermon, debate, lecture daily as I commute to work. My goal is to listen to all of Bahnsen’s recordings, so far I’ve listened to 751 of 1780. Read theological books. Good theological books, and one at a time. Don’t be scatterbrained getting bored halfway through a book and opening another book. Commit and complete. Obviously read the Bible 😃 Work through reading one book at a time. Commit and complete. Try handwriting a copy of Scripture. I have written a copy of Ecclesiastes, and currently writing out the Pslams and up to Pslam 22. Take notes, many many notes, and categorise your notes. Use a good Bible software for this. I use Logos Bible. I have some 7700+ passages saved into 1000+ categories, with over 100k words in notes. This is a great way to see where you are most weak. About over a year ago I went through reading all the books in the Bible where I had zero notes or less than xyz number of notes, in order to train where I was weak. Meditate upon the things you have learned. Talk to brothers in Christ about what you have learned. And always give thanks to God for being so gracious in teaching you His word. I’m not in seminary, never went to seminary. I’m not a pastor or elder. I work a normal full time job Monday to Friday. I just love God and enjoy bringing all my thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

I memorized the first half of Romans over the course of a year. I found the most helpful way for me was to recite the chapters in the shower. It was a productive use of a time when the mind tends to be ironically both very active and also subconsciously passive. That is a perfect combination for memorizing! It was repetitive and each time, I would try adding one more verse. I was successful, praise the Lord, using this method and I hope that tip is helpful for those looking to memorize entire chapters/books in comparison to one-off verses. SDG.

I like the Bible diagram! I've never seen that before. I've used flashcards in times past, but once I began memorizing Scripture in quantity, it was no longer practical. I pretty much do all my memory work directly from my Bible. I have memorized the New Testament through several times, as well as the book of Proverbs and other significant portions of the Old Testament. I consider Scripture memory crucial to my spiritual life.

As a challenge to myself, I have compiled a list of exactly 100 verses that would be useful to memorize. There are many other verses one could memorize (an entire Bible's worth!) but I felt these are fairly concise, useful to know by heart, and devotionally rich. I'd recommend starting small and then working your way up to the larger ones: Deuteronomy 5:6-21 Deuteronomy 6:4-6 Psalm 1:1-6 Psalm 23:1-6 Psalm 32:1-11 Matthew 28:19-20 John 1:1-3 Romans 5:1-11 Romans 8:1-39 Galatians 5:22-24 Now to memorize them!
@JoshuaBSunderland
@JoshuaBSunderland 2 месяца назад
The main issue I have with my list is I struggled to find a teaching of Jesus that was short enough to include. His teachings in John 3 and 10 are great though if that's what you're looking for. Also, the Lord's Prayer is not on there because I assume many Christians already regularly say it in church and the three Psalms help show prayer, but that is another great text to have memorized.

I write verses on index cards and repeat small portions of it hundreds of times before moving to the next verse. For instance: James, a servant of God (repeat hundreds of times) and of the Lord Jesus Christ, (repeat hundreds of times) to the twelve tribes (repeat hundreds of times) which are scattered abroad, greeting (repeat hundreds of times). I do this and then blend the whole verse together. By using this method I've memorized the entire books of Ecclesiastes, Jonah, Obadiah, Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, James, and 1 John.

My daughter thinks this is absolutely crazy, but I've been able to memorize Ephesians, Colossians and currently 2 chapters down in 1 Peter. I personally don't memorize the verse numbers or commas as this wasn't part of the manuscripts. Ex. Col. 3:16 - Let (twoCrdwy), with (awtaaoa) with (pahass), singing (wtiyhtG). Then adjacent to it I write out the verse. Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God (NASB). I often use bold to highlight key words to trigger my memory.Then repetition, repetition, repetition to bury it in my long term memory as well as asking God to enable my mind to absorb it. Probably won't help anyone, but just in case.

I somewhat recently read a book that made some good points on why you should try to memorize whole books of the Bible, the reason I felt most compelling other than scriptures saying we should write the words of God on our heart, is you get a much better understanding of the whole thought process of the author's intent in their writing and its much harder to take verses out of context. It also does a great job on how to go about doing so. It's a pretty short book AN APPROACH TO EXTENDED MEMORIZATION OF SCRIPTURE By Andrew M. Davis God bless! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
