I do find these star battle solves quite enjoyable. From an artistic perspective, I like to use black to shade the cells that can't be stars and make the stars yellow, so that the finished puzzle resembles the night sky. Brilliant work as always.

31:12 I think Simon may have prematurely dismissed some good logic here - the remaining purple in the "emu" (looks more like a flamingo to me but whatev) is impossible because it would require stars in yellow and blue for the "Joshua tree" region, and if you do that the placement of the purple and blue stars will rule out both of the red positions in "emu," which means that region couldn't take a second star anywhere

Awesome puzzle! At around 40:00, there's a simple way of resolving instead of using that chain. If you look at columns 6 & 7 (as Simon did at 36:00), you can see that placing a star in r2c6 would rule stars out of the 2x2 block immediately below (r34 c67). So instead r2c5 must be a star, which forces a lot
@martinepstein9826

Since you bring up r2c6, I can now see that if you put a star there you can only put 1 star in column 7.

It is fun watching a difficult puzzle like this be solved. One note is if you are ever doing 2 start for row or column, and get 5 in a row left. the sides spaces 2 and 4 of that 5 line can never be stars. Row 6 has had that for quite some time. Thus the one blue square, r5c3, would turn green. One of the star battle hint programs shows that.

At 31:15 I think you had the right idea. Making R5C8 a star requires the "Joshua Tree" stars to be in yellow and blue. That removes the yellow and blue regions entirely from the "Emu", and now you don't have enough possiblities for stars in the Emu, because R5C8 and the Joshua Tree star in blue remove both cells of the red Emu region.
@Raven-Creations
@Raven-Creations 2 года назад
I was about to make the same comment, although I think you meant R4C7. The way I thought about it was if R4C7 was a star, it pushed the star in the red domino next to blue, leaving the Joshua Tree with only one space. Whichever way you think of it, you end up with a broken heart.

When there are several options, I like to use digits in the center of cells. Say there's a star in one of 2 cells. Write 1 into one of them, 2 into the other, then place 1s and 2s in all cells that would be forced to be stars

Wow, that 2x2-cell square trick is beautiful! It made me realize the following: since we expect 20 stars throughout this puzzle, and there are 25 2x2-cell squares in total (if we divide the grid into a regular checkerboard), there will be exactly five 2x2-squares that will contain no star: one per row, and one per column. And the placement of these 5 2x2's has a total of factorial(5) = 120 different possible configurations within the puzzle, just like any digit in a 9x9 sudoku puzzle could be placed in factorial(9) = 1x2x3x4x5x6x7x8x9 different ways. It is very much like computing the determinant of a N x N matrix in linear algebra, which consists of factorial(N) terms which represent all the possible configurations of its factors. Moreover, the funny broken-heart-like shape in the centre of this puzzle effectively reduces the total of 120 possible green 2x2-square configurations down to only 4 configurations already. And the 7-cell region in the lower right corner reduces it further to only 2 possible options. And all that just by the geometry of the puzzle. Sam Cappleman-Lynes, take a bow! Just like Simon :-)
@alienrenders
@alienrenders 2 года назад
That's what I did. I used a checkerboard pattern and knowing there has to be a star in the bottom right 2x2 means the top right 2x2 is empty as all other 2x2's on the right must have stars. Then you can go around the grid and you get almost all the bottom for free without doing any of the logic Simon used. You can bypass all of that.

When I was solving, at 26:46, there was some beautiful logic I saw: In columns 9 and 10, in order to disambiguate where each of the stars go, in column 8, either the cell in row 5 or 7 would have to contain a star. Combined with the star already present in row 9, this meant that there couldn't be a star in row 1. This then leads to placing a star in column 5, row 2. Never did these kinds of puzzles before, but this was quite fun.

Around 25:33 ish I found it helpful to look instead at columns 9&10 (or actually you could have looked at it a while earlier, but there are so many places to look and a few different ways to approach it, so that makes sense). You have 2 in of the b-shaped region because it's a region, and 2 in the bottom 4 rows because of your colouring. This leaves the top 2 rows green, which gets you to the same place you wind up @26:00 ish by what struck me as harder logic

Wonder if at 20:52 the pun "disasterous number of stars" was intended? dis- as a prefix like in dishonest negates the later part of its word, aster (lat)=star...
@slurpleslixie
@slurpleslixie 2 года назад
In this case it is negative, but it can also (rarely) act as an intensifier instead when the word that you're dis'ing already has negative connotations, e.g. disgruntle (from gruntle, meaning grunt/grumble - disgruntled means essentially 'made to grumble') or disannul (which helpfully means almost exactly the same thing as annul). Also dissever (meaning the same as sever) and disturb, where the "turb" part already means to disturb (from the latin turbare - to disturb) English do be weird sometimes

Finding two contiguous 4by4s giving eight cells with only one star tells you nearly as much as knowing which 4by4 is empty. You still know all the other 4by4s are full. Knowing whether the star in the eight cell region is at the top or bottom only affects whether the star in the other eight cell region across from it is at the top or bottom.

I didn't understand this at all except I think I figured out before Simon that r6c6 could not be a star because if it is a star then you'd need two stars (to have two in the left half of the heart, which I think Simon called an Emu for some reason) in the blue cells and Simon said (for some reason) that only one cell in blue can be a star. I was right but it was the second last (or as Simon would say, penultimate) thing Simon did on the puzzle.

A little request for the future, it would be nice to have "black" as the "not star" night sky, and orange as the "star", and "blue" for the "maybe sky". In the beginning, you used red and green which is troubling for color blind (I'm not color blind but I'm a UI designer so I think about color blindness quite frequently).

Star battles are shiploads of fun. But can including answers be done? I'll suggest if i may You instruct us this way: "Label each star as zero or one." Seriously. To disambiguate, make the topmost leftmost star always be zero. Now you can include a solution.

This is only my 2nd star battle puzzle, the first was the puzzle in puzzle in puzzle a few days ago. Got to the same point as @30:00, and looked at the two pairs in r46/c56. If I highlighted r6c5 as a star, i could quickly highlight everything else and get a valid solution, but that doesn't prove the solution is unique, so gave all those cells a coloured flash. Then highlighted r6c6 a star to try and find contradictions, that also forced some of the flashed cells to be stars, so could remove their flash, make them stars. Then eventually ended up with that option being almost valid, rows & columns were fine but one of the central regions had 3 stars, one had 1. So that did prove the solution is unique, but felt very much like bifurcating, felt different to following a short hypothetical chain in a sudoku puzzle and finding a contradiction. Now watching the video and redoing the puzzle along with it, looking for what I may have missed or less bifurcaty ways to eliminate things. @31:15, r4c7 being purple would force 2 stars in that region, rule out the entire left hand blue section. That means at least one of the first 3 rows of c7 is a star, so r2c6 is not. That immediately places a bunch of cells, and leaves a sort of x-wing thing in r4 & r6 that covers 3 stars, so exactly one of r46c2 is a star, so r5c2 is not, and then the puzzle is done. Much happier with that, grumpy I missed it the first time.

I reckon that was a really 'Monty Python' solve, Simon. You did some brilliant logic right at the start on the central heart which gave a 2x2 X-wing across the heart. You narrowed down the bottom right hand 2x2 to one possibility as a star and could have used that to determine the other empty 2x2 's. Instead you did 'something completely different' to do with Joshua trees. You got there, but I was a bit hoarse by the end!

One strategy I didn't see in this video is that any time you have a line of 5 squares that must contain 2 stars (timestamp ~35:50 in Row 6) then the adjacent cells in Row 5 and 7 that correspond to columns 2/4 in the line cannot contain stars (because it would force 2 stars in adjacent cells in the line of 5).

It would have been a very interesting video with different colours. I'm nearly unable to distinguish between yellow and green (because of partial color blindness) so it's quite difficult to follow Simon ;-)

The green and yellow colors are very similar to each other. Please refrain from using both of them next to each other. (Alternatively, the green color should be darker.)

I skipped to near the end to check my solution, and I thought the coloring didn't make any sense. It wasn't until I saw him change a green to a yellow (or vice versa, won't strain my eyes to find out) that I realized what was happening.
