You've gotta be really careful with the lower mic positions shown here where the microphone is close to the same height or level as the various ride and crash cymbals. When those cymbals are struck and they rock up & down, there is a very noticable cyclic phase cancellation as the mic picks up the waves eminating from the top of the cymbals (+ phase) and then the cymbal moves so that the mic then picks up more of the bottom sound waves coming from the cymbal (- phase).

This was a great, informative video. I have a Shure MV88 video kit and I’ve been wondering how to do this. Im wondering though, a lot of drummers would like to know how to make cover videos, where there is a song the drummer hears in IEMs, the same music synched that the viewer can hear, and a video to it. I have no idea how to do this and would really like to record me playing some covers in the future. Even more would like to know how recording would also be for band practice in a smaller room. Not many bands practice in big practice spaces. Mic positioning ideas, cus I’m lost! Thank you!!

All positions pick up more cymbals than drums. I would set it 2 feet off the floor pointing straight at the kit.

Some selective high frequency EQ can help with that, but it will also affect the sound of the "bite" and "crack & sizzle" of the snare drum and some of the upper harmonics of the smaller toms. This is why we will nearly always want to have a separate close mic at least on the snare drum, as well as the kick drum whenever possible. You'll just have to pay more attention to the phase relationship between all of the microphones

@@bbfoto7248 Finding mic placement is number one priority in ANY situation with ANY microphone. Fact. Obviously multiple microphones can provide better results but in this case we just have the single MV88+ so irrelevant.

Hi Yuri, on the MOTIV app on PC (or MAC!) what gain value and what polar figure did you use for the recordings? When I record the drums the maximum gain value is 4.5dB, otherwise the red LED flashes! Many Thanks Alex.

Hi Alex, I recorded directly to mac laptop. I always record in flat mode, and I don't remember the exact gain setting but it was very low (4.5 dB seems reasonable) and I had the limiter on. I kept it in stereo at 90 degrees. Alfonzo is a fantastic drummer that controlled his dynamics very well, which also made things a lot easier :). - Yuri

What extension cable do you use for mv88+? The original cable is too short for the settings. Thanks .

Hi! The cable is a Shure Micro-B to USB-C Cable (AMV-LTG). You can purchase it here: www.shure.com/products/accessories/amv-ltg

I don’t see anywhere on the package of how long it is. I am currently using a 5 foot cord. It would be nice to use 2 MV88+ mics and pair them up. It is that a possibility? I started with the MV88 and then bought the MV88 + when it came out.

What mic holder and usbc to lightning cable were you using?

Hi Alex, I was using the cable and mic clip provided with the MV88+ Stereo USB kit. The cable was USB-C directly to my computer, not lightning.
