How to MIG Weld Aluminum with a Spool Gun

Watch this video to learn how to MIG weld aluminum with a spool gun. When welding aluminum, you are dealing with a much softer metal. Because of this, you’ll need some special equipment and follow different procedures. Because of its softness, aluminum wire is difficult to push through a standard MIG gun. That’s why we recommend the use of a spool gun. This reduces the distance the wire must travel. Learn how to MIG weld on aluminum with a Millermatic and a spoolgun in this video.

I'm a miller fan. Every school I've been to uses millers, I'm a journeyman (Alberta) welder, and although my shop runs lincoln's and esabs, I prefer miller. I'm also shocked nobody is asking about base metal and filler metal types. Had huge issues running 5356 wire on 6061-T6 pipe with a spool gun. 4043 wire was much easier, but still had issues. (hot cracking with full penetration with both types) Tig is the only way to do aluminum in my opinion. No problems with 4043 or 5356 with tig.

Anyone who actually welded professionally at a professional fabrication assembly shop, used monster sized Millers. Lincolns are for repairing your parents railing, rewelding that plow that keeps breaking and spot welds in the driveway and that's about it.

Good Video for beginners!! However try to avoid large weave beads on aluminum!! A straight weld or short stitch motion will get you better results in my opinion.

I bought a Miller Spool gun about 14 years ago for about $1,000.oo and have hardly used it yet. I have used it a little with my Millermatic 250MP. I appreciate the tips, I intend on watching this a few more times in the future.

I would buy a Miller over any welder! Have built 3 bikes over the last 8 years, and never had an issue with welds not holding up or breaking. Miller welders makes welding easier, and the end result is a clean and durable weld. If your thinking about buying a different brand, just save your money and get something that is reliable and will last forever! Cant wait until I save up to buy this one! My name is Justin and I approve this message! :D

You can make X-ray welds with the welder in video. Have been doing it for almost 25 years.Secret to Alum mig welding is clean,clean and clean some more and no air moving at all.
@SupaNautica

The most important thing is to turn up your gas flow to 30 and push, never pull. Like steel, migging thicker material is easier, so start thick, get your head around it and then work down to thinner material. If you do that, you will have great results, moving fast, clean material and settings are important but that gas flow is top priority.

@Cuyoherna During the process of getting certified, we discovered the best gas to use to pre-heat aluminum is propane cuz it does not leave the black soot which contaminates the metal. Also, the ideal temp to start welding the thicker alumnum is between 200-250 degrees F.

@Delticola No, it wasn't you that was 16, it was someone else from the other post below. I'm confused now, I think I ment to respond to that 16 year old kid. Or maybe I confused your comments with his. Either way. We agree on Miller. Really nice stuff. I've got the 212 Millermatic and the 180 diversion in my home garage. Still learning the Tig however. Something almost funny to say, the Harbor Freight Tig Welder, the 230 Amp blue box, is a fantastic DC TIG.

@zpgJiggleBilly I see that you're 16, perhaps really good at welding, perhaps having $43 an hour job offers. But both Lincoln and Miller are fine pieces of equipment. Miller is more expensive by far, and they stand behind their product very well. Lincoln might sell more machines because they have their stuff in Home Depot and have larger distribution warehouses. But Miller builds their machines very well to last a lifetime I believe. At my job our shop has had a miller Mig for about 35 yrs.
@bloopbloob
@bloopbloob 11 лет назад
And I'll add, yes anyone can be a welder. Just pull the trigger and follow the line. But to be a good welder is something very different,and is why you can make $35-50/h here as a journeyman, and $110-160/hour as a b-pressure with a truck. A lot more to it than garage welders think.
@zpgJiggleBilly
@zpgJiggleBilly 13 лет назад
@Delticola How did you come to the conclusion that I am 16? Also having both a miller and a Lincoln, I can tell you that at least half the lincolns I have used suffer from very slight but noticeable amperage fluctuations while welding, causing reduced penetration and over all poorer quality of work. However when I just want to get two pieces of metal welded together just to weld them together I will go with the lincoln, when I am working on a major project I will use miller every time.

@TSorovanMHael 14 лет назад
Not really necessary to use a spool gun. You can get by with some slight modifications to a normal MIG lead. 1)Use teflon guides and a teflon liner. 2) Use smooth double U-groove rollers. (Rollers meant for steel are usually single V-groove ) 3) Use the lowest amount of feed tension possible. 4)keep the liner and tip clean. replace tips often 5)keep the tip recessed 1/8" inside the nozzle-this protects if from heat, spatter, and fouling. 6) use US made wire & tips which have better tolerances

I've been welding aluminum for years and prefer it WAY more than steel. Yeah, steel is more forgiving, but it's nice to be able to pick up a 20 ft joint of 3X3X1/4 by yourself and cut it with a chop saw.

How do you manage to stop the camera from being "blinded" by the brightness of the arc and just showing a completely white picture? Did you use a special filter or did you put a welding mask in front of it?

What do you need to run this spoolgun off of a gas driven welder?
@MillerWelders
@MillerWelders 4 года назад
Hi David. Bobcat’s require a WC-24C to run a Spoolmate 3035. They also require a WC-115S with a contractor kit to run a Spoolmatic 15A or a Spoolmatic 30A. Trailblazers and Big Blue’s require a WC-24 to run a Spoolmatic 15A, Spoolmatic 30A, or Spoolmate 200 Series. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Hey I just started a job in a new shop with this machine and a spool gun. Doing aluminum. Not sure if it was calibrated. There is a ton of spatter and scorching. I'm dialing in the machine constantly but not getting accurate welds. Welding 6061 alloy with %100 argon. Getting good penetration but at the end of a fairly short bead (2" long) it starts to burn through. The cold start has me with fat and high beads at the start that need a lot of grinding and the end of my weld has shallow welds with undercuts that need a second pass over them to be level with the material. It's a mess. Welding pipe-to-pipe 3/16" thick. Aside from these issues my question is this: does this auto calibrate function merely dial in the spool gun for me to then adjust my own voltage and wire speed or does the auto calibrate work so I just "go" and the machine senses the correct wire speed and voltage on its own? And will this function sense when the material gets hot so it dials it back automatically?

it has to be mixed with argon. only reason to use helium is to get a hotter weld puddle.

Can I hook a aluminum spool gun to a 250 miller
@MillerWelders
@MillerWelders 3 года назад
It is probable that a spool gun would be available for your 250, but it depends on which 250 machine you are inquiring about. You could email us at info@millerwelds.com or call service at 920-734-9821 with your model and serial number and a service technician would be happy to help get the correct part numbers for your specific machine. Thank You for reaching out.

One thing you missed is that you use a larger contact tip than the size wire used to account for expansion, i.e use 0.035 tip for 0.030 wire. This is only for aluminum.

@xECHOx123 school is the best place to weld. If you go to community college and take a welding class you can just pay for the class, and then you get the opportunity to weld probably every day using the schools materials and facilities. I am so glad I went to auto body repair class, I go to fuck off with all those free materials using free tools. We had high quality paint, tools, paint booth, welders, frame machines, and whatever else. Had to be some of the best days of my life, learned a lot!

Hey nacho I couldn't have said it better. I've worked with a bunch of wannabe's in the past who don't give a hoot about the work they put out. All they cared about was getting a paycheck. And the sad thing about those kind of "welders" is when you try to show and teach them the benefits of taking pride in their work, they look at you like, "man, get the f__k outta my face."
