Hey, big fan of your Evernote videos. Have you ever taken a look at Amplenote? It nicely straddles Evernote and Obsidian, and I love that there is an easy escape hatch if you need to get notes out to markdown. You get a web clipper, tasks, note references, and calendar integration... it has been my note-taking place of choice for well over a year.

Thank you for your support! 💚 As for Amplenote, I did give it a try, but what sold me on Obsidian was the fact that it uses the computer file system to store the notes and files. It is especially good for my video production workflow. I can store video clips and images together with the notes I'm taking. I can even drag a clip or image into the editor at specific points in the script. And, when it's time to edit the video, all I have to do is drag the files to the video editor.

Thanks for this helpful guide. In a future episode, I'd like to learn about the options for grouping notes. In Evernote, we have tags, notebooks, and stacks. I struggle to organize the notes in Obsidian. 1. Following your import guide, I couldn't find an easy way to group notes by tag, as I do in Evernote. 2. I understand that Obsidian's distinguishing feature is links, but I'm yet to see a compelling use case. Can't I achieve the same structure by organizing the notes with tags, notebooks, and stacks? Looking forward to your suggestions. Thanks again!

What do you mean by "couldn't find an easy way to group notes by tag"? You couldn't create the tags, or is the problem related to filtering them? Tags on Obsidian can be created inside the Frontmatter after the word 'tag:' by separating them with commas or spaces and without a hashtag in front of them. Another possibility is to create them in the text using a hashtag in front of a word. You can't use spaces between words in either case. To filter by a tag, you need to open the right panel by clicking on the icon in the top-right corner of the screen (computer client). There, you'll see a new set of icons. Click on the hashtag and Obsidian will show you a list of all your tags. Just click on the one you want your notes to be filtered by.

@@vladcampos In Evernote, we can assign a tag to a note, and then group notes by tags. For example, all the notes tagged "Porto" appeared clustered and separate from the notes tagged, say, "Amsterdam". In Obsidian, I can see the tags in each note, but not an obvious way to group by tags. I only see options to sort (not group) and only by name or time, not tag. Do you see something else?

Hi Vlad! Great video. A small doubt: is there a way to preserve Evernote hyperlinks when migrating? I want to start a zettelkasten in EN but I feel insecure about future-proofing. If Obsidian could keep my connections, I'd certainly be more motivated!

If your links have the same name as the note title, and you select to add the '.md' when setting up the conversion, they will be preserved. However, if, when you create links on Evernote, you select a text or sentence and use the link feature to include a note URL, it will break on the conversion, as I have shown in the video. Unfortunately, there's no way around that. I suggest creating a testing notebook and moving some of your elaborated notes to it. Then, export that notebook, convert it, and take a look at how it ends up on Obsidian.

Thanks for making this video, I'm about to switch to Obsidian but I'm unable to find your yarl import config file on your Medium page, can you share it some other way please? I see a notification at the top of your page that says a note has been deleted, not sure if it is referencing the config file or not.

I just came across this YARLE gizmo looking at options to move stuff out of EN. This looks pretty cool but Obsidian has an Importer that does enex files. What's the difference? Any advantages of one over the other? I'm not actually moving out of EN right now, just staying informed.

The Obsidian importer is based on YARLE, which is open source. The difference, in my opinion, is that YARLE has more options that one can tweak to get very specific imported files.

I 100% agree with you. Web Clipper is still the king out there. And Evernote is super easy to learn and master. I still think it is the best tool for most people. But the nerd in me enjoys the little complications on Obsidian 🫣

You have a good point there, but, in my opinion, Obsidian is also a great option for those looking to leave Evernote. There are many similarities, and it's perfectly possible to use it without the plugins, aka, auto-imposed procrastination 🙊

Is this in a note you imported from Evernote? I've never seen that before, but if I had to guess, I'd say the importer couldn't find and import a note. I'm saying that because this part, "fa460b56-fcd5-4171-a4de-205cd27d0ad4", looks very much like a note address in Evernote.

I have a sneaking suspicion that those 'unsyncable' characters ( : / ? ) are more of a limit of OneDrive than it is Obsidian's. I've never used Obsidian, but I *have* used OneDrive, and it has all kinds of characters that it does not like. On Mac, Microsoft is slowly adding the ability for AI to rename the files to eliminate those characters so that your files will sync properly. Cheers!

I forgot to mention in the video that the problem with the charters happens only on the note titles. And since Obsidian notes are regular text files saved in regular folders, there might be a specific group of charters that one can use that are allowed on titles on all the systems and devices Obsidian is compatible with. But this is just a guess.
