How to Minimize Diffraction Spikes in Celestron RASA and SCT/HyperStar Telescopes

This video is a tutorial on how to wire your cables in the Celestron RASA or SCT+HyperStar combos to minimize diffraction spikes. In many optical systems, diffraction spikes are uniform, like in Newtonian Reflectors. In RASA or SCT/HyperStar telescopes, the wires don't produce uniform diffraction spilkes, causing stars to look a bit unnatural. Using a cable router you can correct this problem. I show how to install a cable router, as well as a few before and after images.

I was just looking at the Celestron Origin and thinking ''there should be a mathematically 'best' way to route the cable for minimal diffraction" and then (because Google is listening) this video came up. HaHa. That's awesome - thanx!!

I purchased a used Hyperstar V3, and the gentlemen provided one of these cable routers, , , , I had NO idea what to do with it! Finally I figured it out then saw your video!

Cody, You are genius. You've become my goto source for all things Astrophotography, especially with my RASA and EdgeHD. Awesome bro. Joe D

I was just complaining about my off-vertical diffraction spikes. They were so noticeable that it looked like I had a guiding problem! Someone pointed out that I needed a RASA 8 cable router and I thought, "that sounds familiar". Duh, I had the exact product sitting in my box of scope stuff! Heading out to the garage soon to install the thing. Thanks for video, I know you did it sometime back. I have enough problems trying to deal with tilt and back focus with the rig without bad spikes.

Thanks for this video. I have this printed router. I hope you can make a video on how to collimate the Hyperstar. I’m about to reset mine because there’s a mm gap. I suspect my back focus sensor is far why I’m getting my stars a circular pattern along the edges.

Thank you for the video 👍 How do you fit the dew shield over this?

Very nice video! Do you happen to know if there is a 3D printed product to do the opposite? A four-spindled ring that encircles the camera and lets you route your cables for perfect, well-defined diffraction spikes? I do my best to tape them down at right angles, but it's usually not quite perfect.

I doubled down and printed a similar wiring harness that forces dob style spikes.

I may suggest to use a nail cutter to trim tie wrap for safety and better look. Thanks for the video.

If you use a small match to quickly burn the cut edges the resulting surfaces will be smooth but don't over do it!

Are there any disadvantages to using a Hyperstar on a standard sct? Thinking of getting one but seems like I may aswell use my standard sct 9.25 instead of investing in an edgehd. Only thing I can come up with would be focusing which from what I've heard is better on the edgehd.

Could perhaps bind some thin armature wire with electrical tape, then bend it into shape as needed. You could also run the wire down the side of the camera and OTA too.

Yes and if you have the "lump" of a cable router on one side of the camera you will get a corresponding "lump" on the side of your stars - that is - take a close look and you will not get perfectly round stars. Far better to bring the cables out at 90 degrees to each other to get the standard 4-spike diffraction pattern AND get perfectly round stars as well.

Is it important for the router to be at the top of the scope or can it be anywhere along the periphery of the corrector? Thanks for the content!

If you position those cables in 90° (like L shape), you get nice cross diffractions seen on newts

Correct, this is for getting rid of spikes and spreading the diffraction instead.

Hi Cody, nice video. I really appreciate your work; clear and concise messages. I have a question (because I am configuring a RASA 11). Can you still put an aluminium dew shield over the cable router? On the other hand, somehow I liked more the look of the stars in your images with diffraction spikes. To my taste, there is a bit of a "messy" diffusion in the others. Thanks again and clear skies.

I don’t think it would fit with an aluminum dew shield. There is more diffraction for sure with the cable router.
@thomasmastrocinque7132
@thomasmastrocinque7132 Год назад
It does fit. You just need to run the cables along the outside diaper of the scope (but inside the dew shield) and have them exit at the opening in the alum8n7m dew shield.

has anyone cut the outer insulation off of the wires. They are individually wrapped inside. They wood be so much thinner. it provides no electrical function as far as I know. it is for physical protection. Are there 3d printed 2 piece batinov mask? so you can put them on easier.
