Cool. But I think you also should talking about the overall level balance before getting into EQ/Comp/etc. The raw stems were already pretty much balanced, although I think it would be worth pointing out, that simple volume control is most powerful mixing tool ever.
Ooooh, really interested to hear your thoughts on Timing Corrections. In what situations do you find you're a metronomic-math guy, and when do you leave things loose?! :)
Amazing video. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. You are definitely on my list for Patreon as soon as I'm recovered and making some money again! Thank you, Wytse!
Great Video but the amount of Ads is ridiculous! Anyways the video itself (when there was a 3 min period with no break) helped me a lot! Keep up the great work!
Very cool video ! Some things that could be improved tho' : - you left out the early stage, which is very important : getting your levels right between the tracks and also checking for phase/timing issues between the tracks ! - sometimes your explanation of certain mixing moves is not very clear, shown too fast, etc... Otherwise : great job !
Since you're working in Reaper for these mix fixes, would you consider doing a video comparison between Melodyne and Reatune for pitch correcting vocals? I'm really considering getting Melodyne, but haven't found any info suggesting that it's better than what I already have with Reatune. A real video comparison on the features between the two would let me know if it's worth it..
As a person who starts his audio engeniering way ,the hard thing for me was to place certain instruments to certain freq. With this video i got rly wide pic of wich instruments is where to be eq-ed. I know it is about the song and i strument in each song. But. This is like basic standard abd i love you for this and i thank you!!!
I really appreciate you making these videos, your style and approach is so refreshing. ~ by far the best channel of its type on youtube, - looking forward to whatever you put up next. ~ Many thanks and much love
Why is the mix broken? The Drums are out of time. The Guitars are out of tune. The whole thing sounds like it was written and recorded by a 10 year old. Are you actually getting paid to do this shit? Also, who configured that console? It looks like the Frankenstein Monster with 3 channels of one kind of EQ, 2 channels of another kind, another 2 of yet another kind and some with none. That kind of non-uniformity would drive me nuts.
this may seem off-topic to some of you, but... it's simply not a complete work (and therefore not ready to mix)... it's clearly a backing track; there is no vocal or featured/lead instrument... *finish the piece first, **_then_** mix it...*
Am I the only one who prefered the unmixed version (except that the kick is unheard)? Maybe is just because as a drummer I'm used to overheads being louder than everything else...
Really got a lot from this video- thank you! Please do a video of the mastering too. And please A/B between the unmastered mix and the mastered mix. That would be very educational and interesting! :-)
Been watching you for a while... LOVE this mix fix format... it really shows off your skills and the ability to observe your moves and choices has been a big help in understanding your approach!!! Please do more of these.... Cheers!
Hi Wytse, just subscribed to your channel. Would be good to see your method for correcting the timing. Clip alignment is something that we all need to do, well, I know I do. Naturally, starting with the drums. The way I do that is by determining the BPM, then recording a click track on channel #1. If its 4/4 ,with the accent on the first beat of course. Giving a higher resolution to the click to 8ths or 16ths will help later. Then using the playhead, I can pause it at the relevant clips and nudge the clips into place using the click track waveform as my ruler. Its a bit time consuming when doing it manually like this, so a clip alignment tool such as ReVoice clip align would probably make that a breeze. Its important from a phase point of view as well as the timing, so a comb filter would help. But when you zoom in on the wave form you can see the peaks / valleys and where the phase problem is happening. Great channel and enjoying all your vids. Informative as well as hugely entertaining. 😂 Big thumbs up!
Kick is way too low I would say. Drums need a little more punch in that case I would also look for that high-end frequency just to brighten up the drums. Would also turn down the guitars in that regard.
"the ringing is not where you think it would be" - yes, it is. the fundamental note is not ringing, it's the fundamental note. it's always suspicious when there is a resonance directly above it. i think i'm not into this format a lot. it seems a bit superficial. you just eq and compress a bit to taste. we all do that. something like that timing correction feature you mentioned would have made it more exciting, even though longer as well
Nice job- agree with your logic that boost in the right places only with an EQ that can remain smooth (usually analog but rarely the right digital plug-in) works well. Also happy to see you understand driving the tape until it soft saturates and lightly compresses. Keep on keepin' on!
Hey man loved your tutorial! What effects rack are you using? I'm a noob, I run through acid pro 8, I don't know if there is anyway I can get some effects with the visual aspect like you have on acid 8, It would totally help.
Amazing video as everytime! (: I'm a big fan Around 9:20, to make the kick punch a bit more in the mix, what idea brought you to equalizing it differently instead of raising the volume (or lowering the others)? Thank you!
Reaper had the same effect one I understood it. Nothing but fire. Also have you ever looked at amplitude pro x3 or sequoia 14 they good too. Reaper the boss tho. Bless
True, but I rather choose to route it to a new channel, this way I can record it for easy recall. Also, sometimes like to summ a lot of channels into 1 stereo bus. However, the Reainsert does have the benefit of gainmatch and latency compensation...
Hi Witse, great content, as always. I was thinking maybe a nice idea for a video could be the mastering process but then not so much the "audiopart" but more things like compiling for cd-burning and ISRC code implementation, hidden tracks, etc...
I actually love ringing in a snare. But then, I'm one of a tiny minority who like the snare drum in St Anger... (disclaimer: yeah, the songwriting was shite)
Love this kind of video also. The smile eq technique for the kick is great. Do you use similar techniques for other instruments? What are the hotspots frequencies in your opinion for instruments? You already described the 300-600Hz for warm sounding E-Guitars. Thanks and go on with your great work.
