I have to agree! I focus on harnessing my time to the max, but, I also want a lot of quality in life. Shaving is the thing in my routine that, the longer it takes, the better. I "think" different when I am shaving. It is a "slow you down" activity that fosters a great reflective state; not thinking in a proper sense, but great mind cleansing time every morning.

Nice video. One notable omission: The brush pinch and swipe, or how to properly apply lather to the tiny hairs in the under nostril area without causing excessive infiltration and irritation of the soap/cream into nasal mucous membranes. Remember, you do this SO often and are SO good at it, it is easy to forget or overlook the little things that experienced wet shavers take for granted. Might be a good idea to tape up a checklist/process/outline on the mirror, review it pre or during video.

I tried your "figure 8" massage with my brush and I must say....so simple and such a soothing feel. Great idea....why didn't I think of that? Especially after the 30 years or so that I've been wet shaving with a brush. BTW....you do a great job with your vids. Very educational for any shaver....young or old.

Always great vids, when I was sick and tired of the high cost of today's plastic disposables I sought out the old safety razors I recall being introduced to my some one about a decade ago...I just loved the look of them. I found them after I thought it would be hard and stumbled onto a treasure trove, at about the same time I found Geo here on youtube. I'll put it this way, I re-learned how to shave here with Geo's video's and now am a well seasoned wet shaver with about 4-5 years under my belt. I'll never go back to canned goo and expensive plastic razors, wet shaving makes shaving a relaxing and enjoyable ritual no longer a tedious and boring chore that you dread. Thanks Geo for having a huge hand in helping me along with wet shaving, makes a very nice change in ones life and routine.

I'm relatively new to safety razor shaving but I think I've found the way to a perfect shave every time. I wet the face, build a lather, apply the lather, then RINSE all the lather off, reapply the lather, then have the smoothest shave with the softest hair possible. I usually do a single pass and theres always lather left over anyways so I found a way to use it and it works for me. Thanks for all the awesome videos! They gave me a big head start with shaving!

The shaving experience for me was an odd one. I hated shaving, but I love my beard, and how it looks after a trimming. Ever since I started using the bowl/brush technique though, I want to shave everyday! I actually put the entire soap into the bowl. I will never use shaving cream out of a can again

I currently use arko and it is amazing. When I fist got it i sliced a slim piece off and started building my lather. My mug almost instantly became overfilled with lather. I like to chop my arko stick that leave at home and mash it into my mug. makes for a great lather every time, The soap last for months as well which is a huge plus.

Hey Cody, I hope I'm not speaking out of place but Taylor Of Old Bond St. Makes a wonderful sensitive skin shave cream. No scent at all. It has great glide and protective qualities. One jar last like 9 months. Make sure you really work your lather in. You can also use a good shave soap with the cream. Lots of people (myself included) love that. Also maybe put a drop or two of glycerine in your mix. Once you get it down you will get the cleanest, most comfortable shave ever.

I've watched all your videos. They're simple and specific, you've taught me everything about the art of wet shaving! This is one of my favorite RU-vid channels, and I've shared it with many friends. I've been doing it for 2 years but I can't manage to have my neck shaven without terrible irritation. I use proraso pre-shave, hot water, proraso shaving cream and balm. If I shave after 3 or 4 days is perfect, but if I try to shave the next day, everything goes wrong and I end up with a terrible red mark and bumps. I've also used alum, hot towel and all the other tips you suggest. I really have tried it all and I don't want to give up. I've been saving money to buy the mercur hd 34c, but I'm not sure that's going to make a huge difference . Any advice? I'm desperate! Thanks!!

***** Hey Geo! What would you say is the best value brush and where should I get one? Wal-Mart had a Van Der Hagen set (bowl, brush and soap) for $24, but that price was way too high for a low quality, wet shaving starter kit, IMO. I did buy the VDH soap by itself for $3, however. And I could immediately tell the difference from the canned shaving "gel" I had been previously using with my shave tonight. So, I'm just in need of a decent brush, my man. Edit: I have like a 15 year old bottle of Old Spice FRESH After shave which is simply sublime in its fragrance (combined with my Van Der Hagen soap, my face is a sweet aromatic melody). Too bad I didn't notice the OS being sold on the shelves anymore. :( Edit2: By the way, Geo.. you're the friggin' man! Thanks to your tutorial on your shaving method, I IMMEDIATELY went from a scrub hacking at my face to an intermediate DE Safety razor barber with my first kit 2 months ago. Many thanks for that!

Can he handle its vintage look and feel, its feather light aggressiveness, its non-rusting ability to be rode hard and put away wet, its ability to sail bladeless and disassembled through TSA security without raising an eyebrow? Moreover, can he avoid dropping it even once the five feet to the floor and cracking the Bakelite? (Put a mat down so it doesn't hit hard.) Remember, this thing looks antique brand new.

Thanks for the video. I just purchased my first straight razor and I am really looking forward to getting honed to a shave ready edge and cautiously giving it a try. I have a round bar of shaving soap and a bowl to mix it in. After I finish my shave, do I need to rinse out the lather that remains in the bowl, or do I just leave it for next time? Also, does the bowl containing the soap need to be covered when not in use? Thank you, Richard

Walking with Jesus you can do either one. I rinse it out because I soak my brush and soap in the same mug

A while back I saw your video where you melted a Col. Conk puck into one of your Shave Nation bowls. Is that possible with all shaving sopes? For instance I have a TOBS puck I want to do it with but wasn't sure if it would mess it up.

Quick question, I was thinking about getting into shaving with a saftey razer and a brush and all that. But the price has been holding me back, can you tell me if I was to buy a brush in the 30-50 dollar range how long would it last?

Well, you forgot the most efficent and tidy method to apply the cream from the tube - just squeeze and drag the tube on your face and worked it with the brush. No messy hands and bowls.

Mr.Geofatboy, can Shave Gel can be applied with shaving brush as well?
@geofatboy

If you're using shave gel, massage it in with your fingers. The gel would likely clog up a brush real quick and be hard to clean.

Hope you see this amongst all your comments. i just purchased a razor kit. It seemed not to get as close as I would had liked it too. Is it I didnt strop it long enough, is it the blade (get an more expensive one), or was I too timid on not to get cut? I cleaned up what was left back with my generic straight blade I purchase from a hair store. I practiced with that for about a year now, so I felt I was ready for the real thing. Again I hope you see this.

If just using the bowl and Tube of soap can we let the lather sit in there till the next shave and build a resin in the bowl over time or is it advised to clean the bowl out after each shave? I see some men have a bowl of that has built up soap in it.

My lather seams to be thin. Yours seams to cover your face very well I can still see my skin. I'm using trumper cream in a tube I'm new to this any help?

This may sound like a silly question but I'll ask anyway. Do you rest your brush inside the bowl of lather between passes or hang it on a stand of some kind?

Because I still have a can of shaving cream, with a good amount of product left, could I use that instead of shave soap, just to ensure that I don't waste any?
