In this chapter, we will focus on drums as in kick, snare, hat, toms and overheads, probably the loudest instruments in the band, and the ones with the most focused range of frequencies. Each mic used will require different treatments.
An English subtitle is available.

Been watching this series in preparation for my first live sound gig which was last night. Bought a MG16XU just for the event. Was very apprehensive initially. This series gave me the confidence & the knowledge necessary to be successful. The band thanked me for making them sound great and thier fans/crew said it was the best they ever sounded. Four different people approached requesting contact information for our services. I cannot thank you enough for the top quality, educational & funny content. Well done.

This is a fantastic collection of educational videos for anybody involved in 'onstage' work. Particularly if you're a sound engineer at beginner or intermediate level. I've owned Yamaha equipment including drums and keyboards for years, and now upgrading my PA system to all active Yamaha speakers ...I have DXR 10s, and 12s and soon will purchase DXS15 subs. Well done Yamaha and the production team. Great work.

If I’m using a mixer/interface will the stock plugins in my DAW also work for live drums or must I EQ the drums on my mixer instead? I have a hybrid analog/digital mixer/interface and completely new to live sound/ recording. Thanks in advanced

A top snare mic should never be placed directly over the drum head. Instead, it should be pointed slightly towards the center of the drum kit, away from the hi-hat, but just above the snare drum rim. Even just slightly OUTSIDE the drum shell is better than directly over the drum head. This way, the mic picks up the natural tone of the shell and some of the snare wires instead of the unnatural sound and over-emphasized 'pop' of the drum. Unless, of course, you WANT to sound like Alex Van Halen!

Considering Alex Van Halen's drum sound is considered iconic.....yeah, nobody wants to sound like that, right?

@@drnewcenstein9571 Sure, it's a unique snare drum sound and suits VH's music. It's part of their iconic sound alright. Not many drummer's sound like Alex. That's what Eddie was referring to when he coined the term 'brown sound'. He was actually talking about Alex's snare drum tone because it sounded like he was hitting a block of wood. He wasn't talking about his guitar tone as everyone seems to think.
