YOU can mix beautiful skin tones for your watercolor portraits and you probably already have good colors in your palette waiting to be mixed, just use plenty of water.

---------------------------- About Deb ---------------------------------------
Deb loved drawing from childhood, but was discouraged from art as a waste of time. She became a nurse, worked at the hospital and raised a family. But she kept painting.
Over time, she became better at realism and honed her unique style of self-taught painting. Deb enjoys painting things from her small town community which she calls Small Town America.
Her scenes are usually nothing special, everyday in small towns, but Deb sees beauty there and shows it to the rest of the world in her painting.
She also enjoys teaching and has started many artists on their own lifelong journey. Enjoy your art and, if you want to improve your painting, check her websites because she's happy to help.

Wow, this is the easiest approach to skintones I have seen so long. Perfect, I might even remember the recipe by heart: grab any primaries you have, mix orange and add a tiny bit of blue, dilute. Thank you so much!

You're welcome. And remember, unlikely triads can make excellent skin colors, so try lots of different combinations.

You're so welcome! I used browns for skin tones when I first started painting but quickly found other mixes were much better, even though the colors seemed odd to use for skin.

You're welcome, thank you for posting. I like posting actual information that can help improve paintings, but I think most people just want to see a painting done, so I try to do both.

You're welcome, Alicia! I wasn't sure whether anyone would like this, but did it for my class, as they have a hard time with mixing skin tones.

I’m relatively knew to watercolor and am interested in portraiture. But as you say, skin tones are really daunting because we’re all so different. And even in one subject there can be so many different shades depending on sunshine shadows etc. Anyway, just wanted to thank you for a wonderfully helpful video. 🥰

Thanks for the skin tones tutorial! Can these colors be used on darker skin tones as well?
@DebWatson
@DebWatson 3 года назад
Yes, that's why it works so well - you use the same colors to mix the darker shades or shadows, too. Then you'll have a professional looking painting because of the color unity.
