I would love to see you mix a vocal that’s recorded in a non-Perfect way some day. It would be lovely to see the whole process without the hardware you use on the way in. Or at least if we can see the settings you use on the hardware etc? Much love! Seen a looot of your videos 🙏
I've become a big fan of throwing the EQ on before the Reverb on the send, feels like my mixes have been a lot cleaner in the low-mids since I started doing that.
Hey Austin! I love your videos. Would you please make these vocal presets available without having to login to studio rack. HAving trouble witht the drag and drop and even copy and paste thing. Please!
Can you break down how that track "heartbreakers" from that band you frequently mix start to finish. Thanks When to do insert when to do send for effects etc. And mixing vocals to fit instruments
Doh, I just bought the UAD Ultimate 12 bundle. I'd love to see a similar video using UAD plugs. I have just recently subscribed to your channel and am digging your straightforward tutorials.
FINALLY CUBASE CAME IN WITH THE MONO TO STEREO ON THE TRACK. The routing in cubase is such a mess. It’s amazing for everything but the mono to stereo routing was so messed up.
Hey Austin I have a question. I recently started using Vocs AI for pop vocals because I write for a lot of female artists & it allows me to create a female demo. The vocals already sound mixed on the output, should I still apply a vocal chain to them?
Question Studiorack won't let Me Copy and Paste Or Drag and Drop How Do You It In Cubase When I Go To Drag and Drop Studiorack goes away and Studiorack won't let you Cope and Paste Thanks
Seriously man every damn video you post is gold. I wish i was your neighbor I’d be there daily learning and collaborating. Truly I watch every video as a musician and aspiring producer with a home studio. You’ve taken me from not being very good to getting much better over night. Keep it up.
Austin is the GOAT and his tutorials are so fire 🔥 but waves is really not worth anyones time or money in my opinion. They are kinda sketchy. I had so many waves plugins, like tons, then one day I upgraded and could never use them again. I called waves support line and they said that it was an intended feature and I would need to purchase all those plugins again. Like what?! I also want to add that I recognize lots of hit records have used waves plugins, Ryan Tedder even uses waves plugins and many people like their products. So if it works for you thats great but I just wanted to share my experience.
@makepopmusic Thanks for all your videos, honestly the best info out there!! I have a question.. I run a stereo group for the main vocal chain then route it to each individual mono signal.. I notice you don't do that.. Is there a benefit to not do so? Does it use less CPU since its in a single track vs running it through the chain on multiple tracks? Thanks again!
I actually have a RME UFXii as my main interface in my studio but I use the Duet for travel and sessions that I don’t want my expensive analog chain. I stopped using Apollo a while ago. Mine was windows only and I didn’t love it.
Can you make a video on how to mix vocals like charlieonnafriday? A song that stick out to me is Dolla Signs. There is something about his adlibs that just add so much to the mix, it interests me a lot! Love the vids, keep it up Austin!
Love your videos. But can we please get away from waves plugins templates. Someone like me I use all UAD and fabfilter for my work. I personally just think waves is legendary but there much better options now and they are behind the times compared to many others.
I don’t use any UAD stuff and I love FabFilter but it’s so hard to share presets using their plugins and I can’t really make a whole vocal mix out of only FF stuff. Waves is by far the most complete and accessible plugin company for us to make free presets for.
You can pop in your session UAD plugins Fabfilters and do the same chain. At the end they all do the same thing it’s just tone, processing and UI difference. And how easy is to share presets in this case.
@@Djmontanamtl I agree. I love templates because of how convenient they are. But at the end of the day we should be teaching how to actually use these plugin and why we do the things we do. But he always does a great job of explaining himself in his videos so kudos to that. Maybe something like what is subtractive eq. Or carving out eq in the beat with mid side to make the vocals sit better in the mix. Or parallel compression and so on. I’ve learn a lot of different methods watching this channel. And I do t even do pop music.
@@jnyce283 i’ve learned a lot too. He as a great way of sharing knowledge. I think too that this channel is for people that already know the basics of mixing and production so he can give us ways to be more proactive, quicker and more creative with our music.
Serban Ghenea has mixed all three of the artists you discussed What I've learned from him is he keeps the mixes simple, and doesnt want to overprocess anything I think you could have eliminated half of the plugins and ended up with a better vocal sound You did some moves which contradicted each other and that lead to overprocessing A good starting chain would be a compressor (cla76), followed by an EQ (metric halo channel strip) thats one specific example but all you need is a compressor and an eq to start with along with the reverb and delay sends which could have been pre made
Serban doesn’t have to do much because this is all done by the engineers and producers before they’re sent to him. You’ll never know how much stuff an actual top 40 song has baked in it because it’s been handled by multiple producers, multiple engineers, printed and bounced countless times, then mixed, then mastered. If you saw the multis that someone like Serban gets, you’d think the song was basically mixed 99% of the time.
The moves I did don’t contradict each other. Each tool has a purpose and a sound. So even though I may take out 200hz on one eq, and add it back in later doesn’t cancel them out. The Scheps eq curve is wildly different that the Puigtec curve, and there are things like saturation in that equation as well. These examples were for pop vocals, which are almost always decently processed.
I think as long as every move or addition has a purpose, use as many as you need. Some vocal mixes have 2 inserts used, some have none, some have 10 because that’s what the song and mix called for. No right or wrong way, all that matters is that the moves are intentional and not just blindly throwing shit on a mix because you assume it’s necessary.
@@MakePopMusic I don't think saying Serban doesnt have to do much is accurate. While youre right ill never know without having the pro tools sessions or multis, and I agree that many engineers have worked on the song before it gets to Serban, he has talked about the sessions he gets and how all the different engineers usually make contradictory or unecessary mixing moves, and he usually starts by taking off whats not needed for the sound. If he wasn't responsible for that sound they wouldnt work with him nearly as much.
@@MakePopMusic I do recognize they werent so contradictory as they could have been, and appreciate you explaining some of your choices as far as saturation and eq curves are accounted for.
Great video! I know it's basically genre dependent knowledge that you are sharing and the artist names are so that people can understand better but the hip hop vocal mixing tips that you shared really has that quavo or rap caviar trending song vibe hahaa
Quavo vocal mixes definitely has some more tuning, widening, reverb, and delay (and heavily relies on ad libs) but the flow definitely feels more quavo than drake 😂
Oh if you mean that rack with the EQ in it, then that's just Cubase's FX channel rack! You can open that by clicking the little e icon on your channel@@Apres.minuit
Sidechain is an effect that you have on one sound that is triggered by the level of another sound. The classic example is when you have a compressor on a bass track and you set it so it ducks the level of the bass whenever a kick drum hits.
Austin pulls another EQ and explains for his boredom… He pulls a plugin and quickly switches to wet signal, without giving us hint of dry signal… Without even listening to audio he quickly goes to the settings started with that… Fave Teacher, fave artist - Austin Hull! And thank you guys for this MakePopMusic!
