I loved when you said that you like to learn the hard way, lol!!! I didn't know there was any other way, lol!!! Great video! I have learned a lot! Thank you ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Hace unos días que descubrí tu canal. Estoy empezando con estas técnicas y me resulta fascinante lo que se consigue. Mil gracias por compartir. Te veo desde Alemania aunque soy española. Un saludo😊❤
New sub!!! Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️!!! I have gone through so many Dutch pouring artists not understanding, how much floetrol and paint ti use for this technique!!! I have tried and failed a few times and am rather bored with flip cups. I gave a learning and cognitive issue, pretty badly and get frustrated when people don't fully explain how much to use!!! Thank you!!!
I just found your channel and am i ever glad i have been collecting supplies for at least six months and now i feel like i am ready to go thank you Becca for the easy to follow directions ❤❤
First time seeing your work on another video and then I came here. Oh yes the paint on paper is the only one I’ve ever seen done, what a great tip. I just subscribed👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great recipe Becca! I’m the same way, I hate measuring lol. I’ve been doing it for about 18 months now and it’s all by feel and good to know I’m doing it very similar to you and getting the same consistency 🎨. Thanks for sharing!
You are so welcome! When I stated I must have watched 50 videos to try to figure it out, so I decided to make one that I wish existed when I started. I’m so glad you found it helpful!
One of the best tutorials I've seen for mixing paint - and I've seen quite a few over the last couple of years! Very helpful and informative and explained in a manner that is simple and easy. Only thing is it's a little bit hard to see your measuring clearly with the background being white but with your explanations it didn't matter too much. Thank you Becca 😊😊
Hi Im à newbie Floetrol 14.99 Wow ! I bought m'y first gallon 46.99 plus 15%tax that is what We pay here in Québec CAD, lol... completely nuts 😂 Thank you for sharing your expertise ! 🙏
Hi Becca I am thoroughly enjoying your videos and always learn so much. I wonder if you could explain your mix that you keep in your squirt bottles ? I ask because I have yet to see recipes for large batch preparation for squirt bottles and on the other hand that you shouldn’t mix large quantities because pouring medium and Floetrol should not be left for too long before using ?
Hi Becca, love, love your work. When including a metallic paint in your pour, do you seal with a satin or gloss varnish? And where do you sign your name? I'm thinking on the bottom or back of the frame. Please let me know what medium you use. Many thanks
Yes of course! Just remember you proportions will be different with different brands and colors of paints, so at the end always test the consistency to make sure they are similar.
Thank you. I have tried for years and this video will help me improve. I live in Costa Rica and we don’t have Floetrol. Can acrylic white house paint cause the same chemical effects you wisely do? Thank you for your help?
I’m not sure. I have heard it produces cells but the other colors tend to sink into it. You can paint with just acrylic and water OR you can check out Olga’s course. She uses a pouring medium that is accessible in more places. She told me if you take her course and then cannot get the materials she will refund you your money. Might be worth the try! Plus you can save 10% with promo code BECCA
Excellent question. Yes, sometimes I do need to add more water. I always test my paint consistency before pouring to make sure. I find that the darker paints tend to thicken up more than the lighter color paints.
I have only ever had paint go bad once and it smelled like rotten eggs. I do not know the answer to your question, but I have had paint stored for months that is fine as long as it is in an airtight container.
I'm a newbie but yes I've tried it. It's very similar to Flotrol if u use Elmer's Glue-All but NOT SCHOOL GLUE. School glue has way too much water in it but glue all works great.
I've only made it a minute in, but once you said something that nearly made me spit my coffee out, I had to say something. I know this video is almost a year old, & I know inflation is crazy right now and the US dollar is still whipping the Canadian dollar, but seriously? $14.99 for the *gallon*? $14.99 is what I'm paying in Alberta right now....for the QUART size bottle! Good grief! The gallon bottle of (American) Floetrol for me is $46.99 plus tax! Forget prohibition rum smuggling, any other Western Canadians want in on my new Floetrol smuggling scheme? (Olga, I know you're out here too 😄) Thanks for the fantastic demo & greetings from Canada 😀
Hahahah!! This made me laugh. If it makes you feel any better the cost has gone up to about $19 USD but not nearly as expensive as it is in Canada!! I feel like there could be big business in this smuggling thing 😉 hahaha
Hi Becca! I actually just sent you a message on Facebook. I've been doing fluid art for about 3 years and have tried and tried to get this technique down. Your video is the closest and most consistent that I've came! Thank you SO SO MUCH! I'm going to spread the word and let people know that this is the video to watch. It helped me so much and I am so thankful. I think that nobody else gets as close as you got to the camera with the cups so that we could really see in there and see the consistency for ourselves. Or at least that's how I feel! I do you have one question now though. I feel like my edges are too hard. They need to be more wispy, if that makes sense. Does that mean that my consistency still is not fluid enough? Will send pictures of what I'm talking about in the Facebook message. Much love from Myrtle Beach South carolina!
Megan, I’m so glad you found this video helpful! That was my goal 😊 I’ll check out your FB message and see if I’m able to help. Also thank you for sharing this video! 😁
Wow! Super helpful - as a beginner I very much needed this info. Using the stocking on the Flotrol spout and comparing your paints on the cardboard was brilliant! Thank you❤❤
I don't mean to correct you, but "Viscosity" refers to the thickness of the paint. I think the word you are looking for is that Golden paints are highly pigmented. Meaning they have a lot of the actual color pigment added to the binders. You will find Golden is the most highly pigmented and Winsor Newton and Amsterdam and just below Golden in quantity and quality of pigments. Liquitex Proffessional is right up there with them as well. The Liquitex basics are more student grade. Meaning they lose some of their color when thined so you have to be careful to not over thin them. With the viscosity the best way to explain them is heavy body paints, soft body paints, liquid body paints and the least viscous is the Alcohol Inks. If something is said to be very viscous it is very thick like the hard body paints. I'm sorry to explain all that to you on an open forum. Please forgive me. But I would hate to see you go on and never learn the difference. You did an excellent job on your presentation. Happy painting.
Yes I know! I mixed up my words. I thought about taking down the video but so many people have found it helpful anyway. I wrote it in the description but not everyone reads that.
My first time to watch you Becca and I really like that you take time to ensure we follow what you are doing. So thank you. I will watch you more often. Especially thank you for the stocking strainer. That really helps a lot.
Could I use any brand of flood floetrol? Several months ago I purchased five bottles of floetrol different brand than usual, I haven't used it as of yet does the brand matter.
3 weeks is nothing. The Dutch pour is considered one of the more difficult techniques. It took me a good 6 months to get comfortable with it, so give it time!
One year ago! My Oh My! Well, Becca, my wife, and I are watching, learning and loving every minute of your instruction, THANK you sooo much! - You are an excellent artist and teacher! ~
This is all me! I'm here for the technical stuff. I feel it's so important and no one ever goes over it. Ever. I own a spa and constantly find that everyone that has been in any field for a long time was never taught the why of everything. It's so important. Ty
Thank-you Becca. I am happy to say I found your channel. Your tip re paint flow consistency is very helpful and appreciated. Your at ease, natural approach reminds me of generous Olga Soby.
Amazon has a strainer lid for Floetrol that screws on, and you can keep on and put the main lid back on over it. Tracie Reed may have them, too. I started with a piece of a nylon stocking, but it sagged too much when I would pour it.
Oh my goodness!!!!! I just discovered your channel and this video is exactly what I have been trying to find. I hope you have more instructional videos for the absolute (soon to be) beginner... Watching from the Philippines. I hope you see this.... In the Philippines, a quart in of floetrol is around $36.00... too expensive for me. Have you tried "Mont Marte Acrylic Flow Medium"? What are your thoughts??? Please answer.... :) . Thanks!!!
I’m so glad this video was helpful! I have not tried the Mont Marte acrylic medium. I’m sorry floetrol is so expensive there! The Australian floetrol is so expensive here, so I understand. Have you tried just acrylic paint and water? I have tried it before and it turned out nicely.
I mix my base paint the same for Dutch pours. Here is a video I made on getting cells. It’s all about how you layer the paints. So many cells with NO silicone in this new #dutchpour series - "Transcending Light" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j6VcWypVXzY.html
I've been doing the same thing with the stockings to strain it as I use it. It's so easy and efficient. I do the same thing on paints, too, if I happen to catch on to the bottle of paint containing "things" of various sorts within it. One time I had Artist Loft bottles of white that had little things in the paint. It took me a while to figure out where it was coming from as I kept getting these tiny little blobs all through my dried paintings. It was so annoying. Eventually I figured out it was those bottles of white it was coming from, and I put the panty hose strainer on them. It works like a charm! Great minds figure out the same sorts of things. 😉 Yes, definitely - get the floetrol in, then the paint, mix that up, and THEN start mixing in bits of water, a little at a time so you don't over do it accidentally. Fixing that is not as easy as just doing it gradually and stopping when it is correct in consitency. I've noticed that works best for me as well, and, like you, LOL, I did not start out having that realization. I sure did NOT start out putting in the products in that order back in the beginning! LOL 🤣 But doing it other ways was a fabulous teacher. Great video! 🥰
Hello again. I watch a lot of different artists so I can learn, learn, learn. There is one artist who uses regular house paint for her pillow. Any comments on that? Also, although I love the simplicity of your recipes, some artists have different recipies for straight pours vs a cell activator. Any comments on that? Thank you again.
High viscosity actually means a product is very thick, like it would NOT flow easily as it is a thick consistency. Regarding the Golden product, I've had those same bottles and they are very thin in nature, but the pigmentation is very high and, therefore, a little is all that is needed. Is that what you meant when you said it was high viscosity? Did you really mean high pigmented? Sometimes I slip my words up and I was just wondering if that is what was meant in actuality. I've had high viscosity glues in the past and they are really hard to even squeeze out the tube due to the thickness so I looked this term up in the past to understand what the high viscosity label on the glue really meant. Here is an example of high vs. low viscosity: Fluids with low viscosity have a low resistance and shear easily and the molecules flow quickly; high viscosity fluids move sluggishly and resist deformation. Some liquids, like pitch, glass and peanut butter, have such high viscosity they behave like solids. The golden paint in those bottle is supper thin so I figured you might have meant they are highly pigmented. Regardless, Great video all in all! 😀😄🤩
Yes! I did mix up my words! I’ve thought about taking the video down but otherwise many people have found it helpful. I think I’ll try to pin your comment so people can see the correct words’ I did change it in closed captions but I don’t know how to edit the video portion
@beccaharkinsart The way you mix you paints is so easy to follow and understand, My question is: Is the paint mixed the same way for the base coat/flow extender etc?
Ouch!! You might want to try Olga’s recipe. It would probably save you money since Floetrol is so expensive! If you want to you can use my promo code for 10% off. BECCA
