First of all, THANK YOU! Your guide got me 99% there and I bought the exact parts you did for my Yoga Flame SF2 cab and a Super Console X Pro. I couple of things I didn't see in the video that may help people: 1. You must plug in your HDMI LCD Controller board in order for it to work! In my case, the plug from my Arcade 1Up which used to go to my PCB board worked fine. 2. The position of the joysticks matters! I spent more time than I'd care to admit trying to understand why one of them kept registering up as down and down as up. I assumed you could just configure it in the software and it wouldn't matter. WRONG. Hope these updates help someone!
Is this still completely up to date and relevant for 2023 as far as parts go? Awesome video to help me develop the courage to start. You made it look so easy! Can't wait to get modding.
I purchased a Space Invader A1up with the hopes to put a retro pie in it but have been waiting on a solution to a control panel and just stumbled onto one today. Glad I found your video and that you offer SD cards so next month I should be getting one from you. Expect a lot of questions lol.
Dude thank you! I have the final fight and mk2 cabinets. I was staring the final fight buttons down for a while trying to figure out how I would fit 6 buttons.. then I looked at the mk2 and said screw it this is much less work! Its got 5 buttons. Then watching your vid i was dreading the hole for the select button but saw you popped them on the side - BAM! So much easier. Might throw in 2 buttons on both the sides as extras.
Solid choice man! Yeah the final fight one was such a pain but I got such a deal on it and this was my first time so I figured hey if I screw this up at least I'm not out much money. Turned out nice in the end but certainly a lot more work than what you had to do with your MK cabinet! Glad it worked out for you. Love hearing that the video was helpful to those taking on this mod challenge!
@@RetroGamingGuy Your videos are always helpful! Do you think there is a lot of mame titles that require 6+ buttons? Should I even bother making a 6th one aside from the select button? That was my main concern, having a game but missing a low kick or something!
Awesome video. Thanks a lot for doing these very in depth instructions. Personally I'm familiar with about 70% of what you're showing BUT there are so many people that are just beginning and need this level of tutorial. When it comes to building your library for use on emulators and front ends I certainly struggle so this approach of yours is VERY APPRECIATED. Honestly I like the comic book look of your set up but I really prefer the hyperspin look. It's the only thing keeping me from buying your card as I just don't have time to fool with stuff. I just want plug and play. Keep up the great work man and I may just say the heck with it as being picky about a front end is being, well, picky. And I don't like being picky lol.
Haha totally understand! You can actually change the theme here. This is just the default theme but there’s over 200 themes to choose from. I’d have to check hyperspin specifically but I’m almost positive it’s in there. I’ll link you to our video on changing themes it’s really easy but often overlooked. There’s also some cool arcade1up themes which I haven’t got too far into but I did demo one here on the channel.
Awesome video. IS the process the same on new cabinets? I have the midway legacy cabinet and the audio is top mounted and the speakers have a 3.55 jack not single wires. IS there still a way to do a complete pi mod.?
Hey not as familiar with those but I believe so. There will likely be some minor differences but sounds like the audio setup there would probably be easy to setup. Probably just plug directly into the he pis audio port.
Same for me, I have the midway legacy edition, I’ve tried to plug the 3.55 jack directly to the raspeberry pie without using an ampli, but the sound is too low. I’ve tried different setup in the raspeberry pie parameters but never been able to have high sound.
You mean the volume control wires for the arcade1up? You don't utilize the on board volume controls. When installing a raspberry pi 4 the volume is going to go through the hdmi cable or thorugh a 3.5mm cable depending on your setup.
I enabled a hotkey when I configured the buttons and joystick but it does not return me from an arcade game back to the menu. Is there a specific configuration needed with the arcade games as well?
great video :D which retropie image are you using? is it possible to use original arcade1up joystick with usb encoder? is it possible to use the original speaker on raspberry withouth the ext mini amp?
I don’t believe either are compatible. You may be able to wire in the joystick and buttons into the encoder somehow but honestly they aren’t really good enough to make it worth the extra work in my opinion. You’re better off just grabbing a kit to swap everything out. Link in description for a kit. The amp is needed to control volume. They’re only about $15 or so
I picked up the Space Invader counter-cade version for $30, I plan to install a Pi in it but it only has like one button. Not much room for 2P unfortunately so I was thinking I could run some USB ports for game controllers.
Hi, I think this is a very good video showing how to modify the Arcade 1up cabinets. I am new to this but I would like to try to modify my cabinet. What was missing for me was how to actually get the games onto the SD card, like where I find the games, and how to get them on the card. Do you have a video showing how to do this? I keep searching for a video like this but all I get is the actual modification without showing how to find the games and how to install them on the card. your response will be greatly appreciated.
Hello 👋, is there a way you can share the link for the led joysticks and the raspberry pi 4. I know I can purchase the card and the cooler case with you.
@@albertramirez2328 I would go with a pi 4 with 4gb ram that’s going to work best with retropie. The 8gb and 2gb have some issues with retropie. They’re overpriced on amazon jump over to Chicago distributors for it. They have the best prices and they’re awesome with customer service and fast shipping. Chicagodist.com
@@RetroGamingGuy I pretty much got everything set up . I went with your 256gb Card😁 which I should be getting in the mail this week. I tried turning everything on to see how the my buttons light but for some reason they don't. My lcd turns on fine but I get a message saying there's no signal. Does the micro card need to be inserted in order for the buttons to light?
@@albertramirez2328 hmmm I’m not actually sure about that. I’ve never powered on a pi without a card. I would think they would light up off the power regardless but maybe not 🤷🏼♂️. Not sure I guess we’ll find out very soon though.
Hey man great video, helped a lot! I’m about to get a MK cab for my birthday pretty soon and I wanna do some modifications but I have a few questions. So for the raspberry pi, would I be able to find one online with like almost all the games you have?? I’m really interested in that and were you able to play like MK deception, deadly alliance and Armageddon? And a thing about the control panel. The only modifications I want to do that is change the buttons to light up and maybe if I have enough money after my birthday then get a new control panel (art wise). But I’m sorry for the questions I’m just really trying to get the best I can get. Last question, does the raspberry pi run all the Arcade1up games?
hey there, happy to help! Yeah I have cards available that would work with an arcade1up mod. In fact the 512gb card actually have a collection entirely dedicated to arcade1up games but there's way more than that available. The one used in this video is the 256gb card but the 512gb card is the latest card with more capabilities. It has less games but that's only because of there's more later releases which take up more space. Below are links to each card tour. I'd have to check on mk deception, alliance, and Armageddon but I'm pretty sure they all work. I have full game list pdfs too I could send you if you just reach out to us by email and request them. 256: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zw2fmgUTFxs.html 512: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YuO9OlncFZo.html
No because the connection isn’t right. You need a usb encoder and the wiring that connects to and from that for a raspberry pi to go in. If you check the description of this video you’ll see there’s a direct link to an entire kit with buttons and the joysticks. It’s u def $40 and really a great kit that gives you everything you’ll need for buttons and joysticks.
It would in terms of most of the tutorial. The control board would be a little different since that one has a different layout than the one in the video. That is a much better cabinet though. It has way more buttons so you don't need to customize it like we had to do in this video.
Awesome video bro. I did the mod only with pie 3b+ I installed a USB dual port into my jpanel plugged into the pie with 2 cheap USB snes controllers. It worked fine for a couple weeks. Now my emulationstation is not recognizing the 2 controllers. Just the 2 joysticks. Any help would be appreciated. I even tried to reboot emulationstation and no luck
Hey there, thanks for the kind words! So the pi has 4 units plugged into the usb connections right? If you were to unplug the 2 (I assume it's two) arcade control connections and reboot, do the snes controllers now work? Try with just 1 snes controller if 2 doesn't work. This will tell us if the arcade controls are throwing off the snes controllers.
@@RetroGamingGuy no I tried rebooting it with the joysticks USB disconnected and just the snes USB controllers in. My emulationstation isn't recognizing the game pads for some reason.
@@brianbuzby5347 Try resetting all your input configs and remapping both pairs of controls. This usually clears errors like this. Let me know if this works. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Yv-fclDfd5k.html
Cordless Milwaukee drill I believe it’s max rpm is 1,800 rpm. Nothing too crazy it does take a little while to drill but I go slow and careful to avoid splintering the edges of the hole
Yeah it will but you probably want to add more button holes as the Simpsons arcade deck only has 2 buttons for each player. Not sure if the trackball will work or if you'll have to replace it with another trackball that does. I would lean more towards needing to replace it but I'm not positive on that.
Hi, I hope you can help me ! I have a Arcade 1up Pac-man Edition with vertical screen. I bought and install raspberry Pi 3B+ and install retropie. I know how to rotate the screen from horizontal to vertical but now, the retropie menu is not centered and miss 2-3 caracters on the left side of the screen. So the outlines of the Retropie menu or games are not centered and 1/2'' is missing of the left side of the screen. Thanks
I plug everything into a power strip with a on and off button and just hit that to turn everything on and off but I use the safe shutdown inside retropie first.
@@RetroGamingGuy I'm pretty new to retro pie, I was wondering if I download an image that's 256gb to my pc, can I transfer just the games I want to the raspberry pi or do I have to transfer the whole thing for it to work properly? Thank you for all your help!
I do believe the 4 is the better and certainly more updated version. It gives you access to more game collections and would be more usable with newer emulators. The other side of it though is if you are happy with the performance of the 3 then maybe the if it ain't broke don't fix it mentality is the way to go. Just depends on what you are looking for. N64, Dreamcast, PlayStation, and PSP runs better on the pi 4. Beyond that I do believe the rest of your collections perform pretty much the same way.
Here you go. My bad thought I provided that. Thanks for pointing that out. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MLWJDGD/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B07MLWJDGD&linkCode=as2&tag=retropieguy45-20&linkId=5c62764f5b950881429045edb230cc5e
I'm confused - I have the MK2 Legacy Cabinet and it doesn't have the same ground wire. It just had this little tiny white cord that was plugged into the grounding spot. Do I have to connect the white wire somewhere to ground the new LCD panel? Because I'm not getting and video on my machine.
Parts can usually be tough to find. I've run into that issue myself on multiple occasions. eBay is the best place to find parts although they aren't very common so you have to wait around a lot of times or buy a broken unit that has parts that you need that aren't damaged. You can sometimes get parts direct from arcade1up but they generally aren't cheap and they're not the easiest to get in contact with.
I recently bought a arcade 1up cocktail table and was hoping i could find a tutorial for cocktail tables, would it be the same as this install how would i get the screen to flip when playing two player
I believe the process is the same it may differ with the layout obviously but same idea. There are video settings within retropie to accommodate that screen setup
@@CrazyCam-ci7yj I can certainly list the parts for this build but I’m not 100% on the one you’re describing as I’ve never done it so it could differ slightly.
@@RetroGamingGuy the machine is a arcade 1up 12 in 1 head to head black edition it has 7 buttons on each side thats including the 1player or 2 player button
Can I do this with an MvC1 Arcade1Up cab and run a Naomi or DC Emulator and play that version of MvC2 with this mod? I got the MvC2 one and returned it. Now I want to make one of my own that runs better. I also would like to upgrade the monitor to something as lagless as possible... would this support that change?
Shut down from within your main menu to sfaely shut down the system but then use the on/off switch on the power strip in the back to cut the power to the unit.
Oh on a outrun a1u? Are you going to be adding buttons and joysticks in place of the wheel or keeping it as it is? I'm not sure if the wheel would work with retropie. A lot of usb wheel controllers do work with retropie but it's a little hard to set up. IF it did work you would only be able to play racing games and I would imagine it would be the older one not the later titles like cruisin world etc. Just off my personal experience with wheel controllers they are very touchy to get working well. They tend to be great for outrun and those 80s-mid 90s racing games but n64 and up I've had a lot of trouble with getting the wheel to work well.
I have never experienced that. Damn, wish I could be of assistance there. One thought, make sure your player connections are all conneted to the encoders the exact same way. Each encoder and its connections should mirror all the others.
Lol, ok I already set the new lcd controller board, but there was a wire that connect from the old board to the joystick 🕹. But now since I change the board to the new one. I have no clue how to connect the joystick to the new one
Yeah you can but you're going to want to add additional buttons to that control board since Simpsons only has 2 buttons for each player plus joystick. May run into some of the restrictions I had here where there just wasn't a lot of room to accommodate more buttons but certainly can be done. You would need a raspberry pi 4 computer board, a cooling fan case, and a SD card with retropie and all the games installed on it. Check out our site we have cards with everything on it ready to go. Just insert into a pi 4 and follow this video and you're golden.
I’m using the stock sound speakers from Arcade1up to raspberry pie but not sound, tried the audio jack input on the video chip board to no avail no sound, can anyone tell me what I’m missing?
One of the best options they have actually. That’s already set up with 6 buttons and the start buttons. I would replace the buttons and joysticks which is super easy. You wouldn’t need to drill a single hole in your control board which is great. Makes for a really easy mod. You will need to add select buttons but those buttons come in a kit with the other other buttons. You could drill holes into the side of your cabinet like I did in this video which is way easier than having to take apart the control board completely drill out holes then drill out the same holes on the deck protector. Lots of room for error with that. The side of the cabinet can be done in 10 mins and looks good if you ask me!
I just did a mod on my capcom vs marvel box. I have no sound and I can’t seem to setup the hot key properly. I added the 2 extra coin buttons. I already screwed one SD card trying to configure shit I had no idea. Any help on the above? Thinking about putting new speakers and direct wiring to the Pie and not using an amp. Anyone in Los Angeles do house calls?
You'd need a way to control volume levels though. Did you change your audio source to headphones or speaker? The pi 4 always struggles with audio the first time sometimes you need to cycle through powering it on and off a few times for it to get the connection.
@@RetroGamingGuy I just connected external speaker directly the pi and it worked. The cabinet speakers weren’t working . I had to splice them and I don’t think they connected well to the amp. I may try again later; and see if I can control the volume from the pi or the amp. So everything there seems ok now. I don’t think I’m supposed to Setup a hot key, cause I could never back out of a game after I set up a key. I’m just going to let it default to select and see what happens. My sd card would only load 1 out 10xs trying so I’m waiting on another one . I think I messed with some settings and corrupted it. Wish me luck!
