I know this is a bit of an older video, but I attempted this mod after watching this video like 4 times, with no prior soldering experience, and actually came out good! my cube did not die in the process, and I was able to rout of the switch to the back with only making a tiny sacrifice of removing a tab off the grill. The tips given in the video were reallly helpful, specially for someone like me that has not done soldering before, pre-tining the wire and just tapping it was the method that worked for me. Thanks for the video, I appreciate the work that went into it!
I had this mod done for me in the summer of 2003 when I bought a spice gamecube from an import shop here, they did it for me in person. Completely worth it to play F-Zero GX a month early lol and have access to Japanese and US games.
Very nice video! I came here for instructions and you definitely delivered. I was wondering though, that is one sweet-looking wavebird. Is it original, painted, or generic? I'm quite curious
I imagine an especially adventurous modder who really cares about the color could exchange the innards from a US GC. I see someone already mentioned that. Great minds and all that.
i have a white pal Gc with no Digital Video output socket and a black one with the socket, i swapped the insides over as i love the pearl white case, then chipped and led colour change with new battery..
Nice! I need something like this cause I have a lot of Japanese GameCube games. You said at the end that it only works on the Japanese and US console, so you can do this to a US system if you want to play Japanese games?
Depends on the condition of the heat sink transfer paste. This was undamaged so I felt confident to re-use it. It is less of an adhesive and more to help facilitate transferring the heat.
Impressive!!! But I will stick with my Freeloader disc. Bought my Gamecube in 2003 in Japan and I don't want to ruin it. You still have to swap between US & JP memory cards if I remember correctly, right?
lovely video may i ask what happens when you flip the switch while the console is on? would it brick the system / damage it at all? I'm about to attempt this mod myself, and this exact question has been bouncing back and forth.
Does the Japanese gameboy player disc work with the US region switched on? I ask because I want to bridge and not change between regions since I don't own japanese games (I also don't want to drill or cut into my gamecube to install the switch)
Hi man, I just realized this mod will be helpfull for me. I just bought the Sonic Gems game for Gamecube, and I found info that Sonic CD (included) will show the japanese soundtrack if japanese bios are detected, I have the US version at my Sega Cd SO I just want to try japanese version and it seems I will be finally able to do it thanks to you. Just one question, at other video from the user bad@chaos I founded he actually use just one side of the R6 connection pads (I understand at my case I must use the R5 connections, since I own a USA console) then the cable goes to the switch and the other cable actually came to the switch from a transistor pretty close to R5 and R6 points (marked at the board as C118). SO I was wondering if this method also have any sense for you? It actually should work the same whitout any problems at future?. SInce I am not so skilled at soldering I found easier to work with connections far from each other. I hope you can solve my question man. THanks a lot.
Is the disc drive or motherboard region free? I have a broken disc drive on my USA GameCube and I wanted to take a working disc drive assembly from a Japanese GameCube to replace it. Will it work?
Hi. I bought a spice orange GameCube. It does not have a switch on it. It plays USA games but the menu is still in Japanese. When a memory card is inserted, it asks to initialize format the card. Also sometimes the error code will pop up "An error has occurred Turn the power off and refer to the Nintendo Gamecube instruction booklet for further instructions". I want the system to play USA games, keep an English language menu and want that error to stop showing up here n there. Can you tell me what might be going on and how to fix it please ? Do you think it's a half way done mod gone wrong ? Thank you. Anybody knowledgeable please reply soon.
I was actually opening up my modded gamecube for the first time in a long time since I accidentally tore the wire out for the switch. I did this mod when I was younger (2015) and I noticed that instead of the second wire connecting to the other side of the jumper, I actually soldered it to the little skinny capacitor above the jumpers for some reason. I don't remember what tutorial I watched back then to do it, but it works somehow? debating whether I should de-solder that wire and do it the way you showed If anyone else can give some input on the old method I used and whether it's dangerous or not, I'd greatly appreciate it
Quick question If one has no interest in playing Japanese Games, can one just solder those two Points together with a wire to permanently make it boot into a NTSC USA? Or try to solder both the metal points for them to touch one another? Thank you!
Thank you for the quick reply!! In your recommendation or suggestion, would be to solder the metal points together or just cut a small wire piece to have them connect to one another? Thank you again!
Old video but this is a easy mod. Advance mod would be more closer to adding a gcdual. I wouldn't recommend using a huge switch and cut into the console ruining it to add a region switch in this manner. But each their own. Adding leds and using hot glue would be a perfect application use of it on electronics.
Hi i have a question i bought a nintendo japanese gamecube with the gameboy reader but it does not have the disc. If i buy a japanese gameboy starter disc may i play english gameboy games? Please i need your help
Stupid question but does doing this no longer make it to where you can play JP games if you don’t put a switch on it? I have a huge library of JP games with a few US games sprinkled in so I would want to keep the JP compatibility
a bit late, but if you don't install a switch, you won't be able to swap between US and JP regions, so you'll have a permanent US region system. Hope it helps
@@RoXolid Okay thank you. This makes me wonder if the Japanese startup disk is region sensitive as you would be playing a US Gameboy game with a Japanese disc at the same time
You can take a fiberglass pen to the pads to give the sour a little bit more to adhere to, that might help. Some no clean flux also would be beneficial. Also, what kind of solder and soldering iron are you using? The wrong equipment can cause more damage than you would expect
Thanks for responding! I'm using a standard pencil tipped elenco iron. No adjustable temp. 63/37 rosin core solder. The guage is super thick for the size of these components
@@fartrellcluggins930 okay, there's no way to say this without sounding like a jerk via text because you can't hear the inflections in my voice. That being said, it sounds like you have all the wrong equipment. It sounds like the sodder is way too thick which can especially cause an issue if your soldering iron doesn't get hot enough. It's good that you're using a pencil tip soldering iron, and 63/37. Here's what I use: www.amazon.com/dp/B00068IJPO/?ref=exp_roxolidproductions_dp_vv_mw www.amazon.com/dp/B00QY5TUGA/?ref=exp_roxolidproductions_dp_vv_mw
I'm probably asking a stupid question but I'd still like to ask it anyways could the equipment come out one Cube console and then switched into the Orange shell without modding it? like the technology from a U.S go in the Orange one?
You can always switch the cases, I've seen cases on Ebay so yes, it is possible to just put in a US motherboard into a Japanese Gamecube or vice versa. However then you still have a region locked Gamecube. This mod allows you to play NTSC-J and NTSC-US games.
I did not, it was in fine shape and other tutorials I have seen have all indicated that if the paste is in good shape you don't need to replace it. It's not an adhesive, it just to improve the heat transfer between the top of the CPU and the heat sink itself
If you don’t have the soldering skills to pull this off... Is there a modding service you can recommend if someone wanted this done to there JP GameCube?
Depends on where you are. This is literally a 20 minute mod. I charge $25 to do this and that includes the micro switch. But shipping kind of makes it more money than it's worth. Unless you really need dual region, I would recommend trying this yourself.
All due respect (seriously, I really enjoy your content) but when it comes to old games, I don't see why some folks are against the "piracy" of them. Nintendo etc has already made their money off them, and nowadays the prices on them (especially GC) are ridiculously expensive. Paper Mario TYD is a perfect example. So, IMO, playing them via SD or burned disc's is a great option. Also if you do actually own them because even with care, you stand the risk of buggering up the game when using it and then have to drop a large sack of rupees to buy it again. But, to each their own.
If you own the game, I have no issue with you dumping a ROM or ISO to play. And I don't care about whether Nintendo has made their money off of something, it all has to do with the integrity of the process. Just because something is old doesn't mean copyright, patent, or trademark doesn't matter (unless it lapses). I'm also not telling others they can't do it. I am saying for myself, I am not doing it and the piracy aspect is one major reason.
I do not. Honestly, with the cost of shipping and labor I'd just buy a second GameCube myself. I actually un-modded mine and that's precisely what I ended up doing
Duuuuuuuude, MICRO SWITCH!! 😒 I can't believe you ruined that case. You could have mounted the switch through the rear vent without cutting the case. SMH. And for the record hot glue has its place. It's limited, but some times you need to tack a wire in place to avoid pinching when you close up. For the most part of you plan your route it's not needed. But not "never".
Engineering is a game of compromises... electronics manufacturers use hot glue and silicon regularly to clean things up... absolutely nothing wrong with it
If you're not using a switch you just connect the two points with a single piece of wire, bypassing the switch all-together. All the switch does is open and close the circuit.
RoXolid Productions I’ve never played luigis mansion but I’ve always wanted to but the first 2 games I’m gonna try to get are tony hawk underground and wwe day of reckoning
make sure you have the right equipment. If you have a soldering iron that is not hot enough, too hot, or has the wrong size tip on it, you could do considerable damage to your system.
18 to 22 gauge wire is thicker than 28 gauge. The lower the number the thicker The wire. realistically the difference in size between 18 to 22 gauge and 28 gauge isn't huge, not compared to like 18 gauge to 12 gauge. I like using 18 to 22 because the wire tends to soak up the solder a little bit better, it tends Not To break as much either when I am working with the strands
The only giveaway for my GameCube, a Christmas present from my wife mind you, would be in exchange for sometime giving me an appropriate amount on money in return.
