Here I walk you through my process of mounting a Platycerium bifurcatum (Staghorn fern) onto wood!
This has been one of my favorite plants for a very long time and what would easily be considered the plant that really ignited the plant passion within me.
Good luck with your new project!

We live in Indonesia and have staghorn and elkhorn ferns that are huge. Almost 2 meters and growing. We use half the wire basket of a standing fan as the base to mount the fern to the wall.

Just wanted to say after a lifetime of growing succulent plants, I've recently been encouraged into Staggies by a friend and purchased two small bifurcatums and looking at mounting them have just watched 5 videos. This is BY FAR the best. Well done :)

I bought my first staghorn fern today because it was on sale and I have always wanted one, but they are very expensive in South Africa. Have gone through 6 other videos and yours are by far the best. Great voicing and easy-to-follow video. Thank you very much, Ma'am.

I found a local Cypress Lumber yard with numerous boards cheap. I now use plastic green mesh like chicken wire. Easy to cut out a window to fit over fern. I encourage you to view as many U Tube videos as needed.

Much appreciated info. Lost my two years ago to mourning doves (which I also love) using them as nests. Husband died a year ago and want to start another staghorn fern. Thanks for reminding why, at age 79🙋🏼‍♀️☘️

The stapler is the best idea for mounting! I didn't think of that. Best tutorial because you tell us how to be sure it is mounted tightly enough and I was concerned it might fall off the board. Thank you.

You can use stockings (the thin skin colored ones) cut into thin stripes for mounting, especially used with orchids cause it definitely won't ever hurt the roots even if it comes in contact with them for any reason:) the moss usually also will cover them over time

I have been putting off mounting my staghorn fern for years because I was intimidated by the process. Your tutorial is the perfect instruction and I'm so happy to take it from a moderately happy container-bound plant to a beautiful and happy mounted plant! Thank you so much for the details and care instructions. Cheers!

We put it oustside just now after watching this. Live in Central Texas were it gets 100 plus. Hope it does well. Thank you very informative.

I rub coconut oil all over the wood I'm going to use to mount my staghorn. Makes it's waterproof and it's all natural.

@danhammond8406

The oil will break down over time so the wood can get wet. The plant likes it when the wood rots. It provides more nutrients

Good to hear that I can use any type of moss! Because everywhere it says to use spaghnum moss but that's just so expensive and I'm like - but I can just get moss for free everyywhere outside! So I hope this is gonna work for me.

Wow! Thank you so much for this very thorough video. I especially appreciate the detailed info on the yellowing and brown leaves and 'shields'. For as long as I can remember I have ALWAYS wanted a staghorn fern but never lived where I could accommodate one. I recently bought a house in Oregon (zone 8b) and bought my very first staghorn fern! YAAAYYY!!! I'm hoping I can manage to keep it alive. It's living indoors near a window. I think my climate may get too cold for it during the Winter here where is regularly gets in the 20's F and in the 100's during the Summers. Excellent video. Thank yo so much!

Another great tutorial Katie- thankyou. Staghorns one of my favourites as well after seeing my first in Australia. I have one mounted hanging in the bathroom with a south - west facing window. Seems to love it there with the late afternoon sun and humidity. Has pushed out three new fronds over the winter months hear in the UK. Notice once a new frond appears it seems to almost double in size every few days!

Wonderful and informative video. I just purchased a staghorn. I'm going to mount soon. However, I am concerned that after each watering session, that the board it is mounted to,will leak moisture onto my wall. Any suggestions for that? I'm considering maybe affixing a sheet of plexiglass to the backside.

Good luck. The most likely one you've found is P bifurcatum as P superbum has one dominant shield frond which does not produce pups, but is propagated by spores from it's fertile fronds. P veitchii is found in the low rainfall of northern Queensland.

Excellent tutorial. Is it necessary for the mounting line to be plastic? I'd like to not add more garbage to forever. Is it ok for the line used to attach to decompose? MIght not be hidden from the start, but eventually and no added garbage to the planet. Thanks for doing this.

That looked like a fungus gnat magnet especially with the banana bits, but if you only water once a month then its probably ok. I see that they need a lot of sunlight though. Do you think this will be ok indoors in regular to low light?

Thank you for this great video :) Do you think I could use a wooden acacia chopping board? You mentioned "treated wood" but I am guessing as it's a kitchen item so there should not be any hazardous chemicals in the wood? It would be so much easier to use as they cheese platter boards already have thumb holders which we could hang the staggies with on the wall :)
