The video on making airplane camera mounts and a selfie stick camera mount is really informative and useful for anyone who loves aviation photography. The step-by-step instructions and clear demonstrations make it easy to follow along and create these mounts with minimal effort and materials. The airplane selfie stick camera mount is particularly impressive, and it's great to see how simple it is to make using everyday items. Overall, this is a fantastic video for aviation enthusiasts who want to take their photography to the next level.

@@WheelsInTheSky I completely agree with you. While 360 cameras are already capable of capturing immersive and engaging footage, there is definitely room for improvement in terms of video quality. As the technology continues to evolve, I'm hopeful that we will see significant advancements in image resolution, sharpness, and overall video quality. This would not only enhance the viewing experience for audiences, but also open up new possibilities for creative expression and storytelling. I look forward to seeing how 360 cameras will continue to develop in the future, and how they can be used to capture truly breathtaking footage. I am waiting for the insta360 x4 to see if there are any improvement at all.

@Sergei Vasiljevich. Yes, I wish the image quality was better. I got the X3 a short while back and was hoping for a big difference, but was a bit disappointed. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for the X4. On the bright side, I’m just happy to be able to capture some excitement. Especially since I don’t have a camera crew.

@@WheelsInTheSky Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I completely understand your disappointment with the image quality of the X3. It can be frustrating when you're hoping for a big difference and don't quite get it. But as you said, it's still great to be able to capture some excitement and memories without needing a camera crew. Hopefully, the X4 will deliver on the improvements you're hoping for in terms of image quality. It's always exciting to see what new technology and advancements will be made in the world of cameras and video. In the meantime, keep capturing those exciting moments with the X3 and making the most of what you have. Who knows, you might even surprise yourself with what you can create despite any limitations in image quality. Thanks for joining the conversation!

Some great ideas Chris. I've used an N Flight + with mount in the past but only mounted it on the inside. I operate under UK LAA Permit system and have to get any installation tested signed off by an inspector. All possible and I can feel a winter project coming on ;)

Watchfordpilot. Good to hear from you. I was looking at an Nflightcam mount, but it called for a #8 or #10 screw. It seems all mine are #6. So I began making my mounts. An inspection sounds like a hassle, but probably a good idea. I was real concerned when I made my selfie stick mount. Did a lot of testing with weights first and then flights over unpopulated areas. Seems to be holding up nicely. Fun making videos.

@WheelsInTheSky
@WheelsInTheSky Год назад
@Vered Fishbain Yoskovitz. Yes it’s in post. When you edit, you select key frames. Key frames are the view you want, ie where you want the camera to look. You also select the zoom level you want with each jet frame. You then scroll further along your video and select another key frame. The further apart the key frames, the slower the camera pans to the next view. The closer you make the key frames, the faster. For a guy without a camera crew, it’s pretty nice. Not exactly the best picture quality, but a lot of fun. Hope that helps.

@VansAircraftBuilders.com. It’s just panels of sheet metal with insulation behind. Me and Joe bought it that way 2 years ago. Everyone wonders how a couple new comers like us found a hanger to buy. They’re a hot commodity. The whole hanger is a metal structure. I just had a hanger built up in Morgan County, 42U. Almost all the hangers up there are wood. So my walls are all sheet rocked up there. The guys all seem to like their wood hangers. They’re 60 X 60, 15’ ceilings and seem well insulated.

@WheelsInTheSky Год назад
@Joachim Stachelscheid. Hi Joachim. For a view of that tail mount, Here's a link to a video I made on camera mounts. Just scroll to the part showing my tail mount. How to Mount Cameras on Airplanes #GoPro #Insta360 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AKKkPPcr9T4.html For that tail mount. I used two 18"x 1" strips of aluminum, about 1/16" thick as the side straps for the mount. Then a piece of 1/2" x 1" x 12" aluminum channel as a spacer between the two straps that attach to the tail. I took my time contouring the straps to the shape of the tail. Then clamped the channel in between the two straps, drilled and pop riveted. Then epoxied a 1/4" × 20 threaded bolt in the end to mount the Insta. My channel was 1/8" thick, so a piece of 1/8" wood dowel on each side of the bolt kept it straight while epoxy cured. Let me know if you like more details, l'Il be glad to help you out.

@edstoro3883. At times it can bounce around a fair amount, but the cameras internal stabilization seems to do a great job of reducing it. I just held my new Insta 360 X3 about 1.5' in front of my wing and was able to see forward, down, sideways, back and I could include cockpit shots. Is there a reason you have yours so far out front? I'm not doing any aerobatics, just flying...It seems that the longer the pole, the more it will flex? I've been looking for a long time how to do this with my low winged Bristell. Great content here!!
@WheelsInTheSky
@WheelsInTheSky Год назад
@DH. I’ve got my camera about as far forward as I dare. It does flex more, but the cameras internal stabilization seems to be pretty good at stabilizing my videos. I think anywhere between your 1.5’ and 6’ is fine. Much closer than 1.5’, it starts to look like the camera is just mounted on the wing. At around 4 to 5” and you can utilize the true value of a 360 camera where it looks like you have a camera man in front of your plane. While you’re holding the camera, try moving out to the 3 to 5’ range and see which view you like.

What engineering sign offs do you need? You’ve slightly modified the airflow; you’ve added mass to the wingtip which could effect flutter in the extreme, the strength of the brackets, etc. Some installations are on certified (non-experimental) airplanes.
@WheelsInTheSky
@WheelsInTheSky 2 года назад
@parkburrets. Hi, I’m not sure where to begin. So, first, I recommend you don’t make a mount like this. Second, the airflow disruption is minimal, no worse than a suction cup mount or many of the other mounts on the market. The mass is negligible, far less than a minor fuel imbalance. There is no flutter. I test flew at each stage. Clearly, I went overboard with the brackets. No single or dual or triple or quadruple failure of a bracket will cause failure of this mount. I could be wrong, but the way I read the reg’s, this is not a modification of the airframe, but a simple attachment that I can put on or take off in a few minutes. I did put a lot of thought on it, discussing with friends who are A&P’s, an engineer and other pilots. But, in the end, just take it for what it’s worth. The same as most everything else on RU-vid, just entertainment. I made the video due to requests to show mostly home builders what I’d done. I hope you enjoyed, thanks for watching.

@Honji Clan. Hi Honji, most of the time I just turn on the camera and jump in my plane and go. Then turn it off when I land. The people at Insta also recommended this, as some times I’d be flying and wasn’t able to get my camera to start using the Insta app. Sometimes when flying my 185 or Husky, I’ll use the Insta app on my iPad to start and stop video. Those two planes have more room in the cockpit and fly slower, so I have more time to mess with the app. Also, if I’m going to use the app ., before I take off I make sure the app is talking to the camera. I have a friend who uses the smart remote, I got the impression he wasn’t impressed.

@WheelsInTheSky
@WheelsInTheSky 3 года назад
@Chris Tieman. Hi Chris, when I first started, I bolted a small battery box to the aluminum angle under my wing and ran a USB C cable up the pole to my camera. You may see the battery box laying on the floor under my wing during the video. I took it off as the camera battery lasts for at least an hour. If the camera sits in the sun, it can over heat and give you trouble. I use to start the camera while in flight using my iPad. It worked most of the time, but, sometimes it wouldn’t. Now days, I just make sure the battery is fully charged and use a 128 micro sd card, and turn on the camera before in get in my plane and just let it run till I land. Hope that answers your questions. Don’t hesitate if you want to know more.

@gregI83. Hi Greg. Thanks for letting me know. There’s not much left of it now. I use it for all kinds of stuff. No, I didn’t build my Rocket. I’d like to build one, but right now I don’t want to take the time. I’d rather be flying. Thanks for checking in.

How do you get on doing these mods to the certified 185?
@WheelsInTheSky
@WheelsInTheSky 3 года назад
Hi HM, yeah, I was reluctant to even mention it. I put it on in the middle of the desert , did my video and took it off to fly home.
@wiljam1968
@wiljam1968 3 года назад
@@hm250 I’ve been through this. As the reg reads (and I’m paraphrasing) as long as the installation and removal doesn’t require any “major tools” no approval is required. Looks like it was held on with thumb screws to me.
@WheelsInTheSky
@WheelsInTheSky 3 года назад
@@hm250 HM, thanks for the consideration. That’s ok, I’m sure others will wonder the same. I’m not sure how smart it is to do such a video, I pondered doing it for months. But a lot of people wanted to know how I made the mount for the Rocket. It’s just as well that I let people know I only mount up the 185 in the desert. Thanks again!!
@WheelsInTheSky
@WheelsInTheSky 3 года назад
Hi William 1968, Thanks for the input. That’s my interpretation also. I’m not sure everyone will agree. It’s easy enough to remove and put in the back of my 185 till I get to the desert and put it back on.

Can I do this on a certified airplane?
@WheelsInTheSky
@WheelsInTheSky 25 дней назад
@theaviatorew I did on my 185. The way I read the reg’s, no specialized tools or equipment was needed and it doesn’t alter the airframe. Simply put it on and take off with a screw driver. The bottom line is that you are responsible to make sure nothing falls off your plane. If you’re not 100% sure, I wouldn’t do it. It’s all fun and games doing videos, until something falls off and goes thru someone’s windshield. Then they loose control and hit a school bus and run into a tractor trailer, which goes off an overpass and hits a tanker truck which….. I also mostly fly over uninhabited areas.

@Jhames Almeda. Have fun. My 185 and Husky have wing tip that just attach with screws. Similar to my Rocket, I just used the wing tip screws to attach the “L” brackets. When you’re done doing videos, you can just unscrew your handy work and put the old screws back in.

@Brian Jorgensen. Hi Brian. Just about year round, but the weather is unpredictable in the winter. In the summer, it’s usually great every day. Although in the afternoon it gets kinda bumpy. But mornings and evenings are perfect. I think fall is the best, but spring is pretty awesome with the snow still on the mountains yet warmer weather. Let me know if you end up out this way.
