Removing the drywall paper for the mesh is genius level. I'm quite embarrassed to say that it has never crossed my mind to do that, nor have I ever seen anyone else ever do it and it seems like the perfect way to do it. Thanks for sharing!

This video helped me so much 😀 I used it to move a junction box and install a new light fixture in my bathroom Thank you so much I've never done anything like that before! I did learn the junction box needed to be centered exactly where my fixture is going to go so in hindsight I would have bought a slightly different junction box because of where the studs were located. but I learned a lot! 😀😀😀

That wall repair was smooth. Also, you were very lucky to have the necessary reach on the wires to get to the location of the new fixture and that they were not inside an EMT.
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 2 года назад
If you only have one EMT leading to the light fixture, it's super easy. You remove the metal box and 1/2" male set screw adapter, then pull out the old conductors as you pull in romex. The romex will come out of the metal conduit and then you can do as shown. Not critical, but ideally you'd place an EMT to romex clamp connector on the end of the EMT.

I have done this about twenty times over the years but for some reason, the conduit or romex will become too short to reach the new location. Think maybe only twice the wiring was in my favor and I didn't have to run longer wiring from the j box or leave an exposed j box. I like how you made a relief for the fiber tape.
@JustinLodes
@JustinLodes 2 года назад
Yeah that’s common. Just use a small shallow blue box as a j-box with a plastic cover with 14-2 wire going to the light. You can go from 12 to 14 gauge even if the the breaker is 20 amp. Just as long as it’s for a single light and not going to anything else.

I've enjoyed your videos and it helped me a ton doing my own kitchen cabs and sink! Now I feel if I can do that I can do anything. However...that said I am approaching a dilemma and I cannot find any info on my next task so I thought I would reach out and see if I can get some feedback. I have and am sound proofing my middle bedroom to be my new home recording studio. The walls are secure with triple insulation including 1-1/2 rigid foam insulation sealed with insulation spray foam. This room is not only dead silent now it is completely air tight...except for my ceiling. The only thing left is the ceiling. My plan is to also apply the 1-1/2 rigid insulation sheets to the ceiling. Once done the entire room will be completely covered in 2-inch acoustic foam panels. Here's my issue. I need to drop my ceiling light fixtures down about four inches. Wiring is not a concern, but I'm not sure how to securely drop & mount the box to remount my lights to clear the double foam. Your thoughts?

A few pointers that may help you in the future, Always double check the power before you actually touch the conductors (Shared neutrals can kill you), Always disconnect the hot first then the neutral and ground last, Always connect the ground first then the neutral and hot last. If something were to happen say someone flips a breaker if the hot touches the ground or the mounting plate at least the current has a path back to the source and hopefully not through you. After I've removed the plate from the wires i re-attach the wire nut to the hot wire and leave it on until I'm ready to work on it, But I always do a check to make sure the power is still off!

Hi do you know how to make a 12volt battery saver. It must cut off the power at 12.6 volt. Many years ago you could buy these to fit on a vehicle to stop leaching equipment from draining a battery below the non return voltage of a lead acid battery. With new vehicles having the ecco mode I can't find these circuit boards.

A nice job. In my experience the chances of the existing wiring reaching to the new location is approximately 0.00000000001%. 😂. That changes the job significantly as you mentioned in the text box since you can’t just add more romex.
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 2 года назад
Actually, I find between 33% and 50%. If you have EMT leading to the light fixture, it's also easy. You remove the metal box and 1/2" male set screw adapter, then pull out the old conductors as you pull in romex. The romex will come out of the metal conduit and then you can connect to the plastic box as shown. Normally you'd use a EMT to romex clamp connector.

I have seen from other drywall repair videos, showing torn/damaged paper sections on the drywall should be sealed (Roman PRO-999 or GARDZ) prior to applying mud. Since, without the paper surface, the gypsum underneath will absorb moisture from the mud differently. Supposedly, the finish can bubble down the road. I have always sealed my exposed sections on the drywall prior to finishing without taking a chance to have to redo. What is your experience with straight applying mud?
@jimw6991

Never done that and not had issues. I would go first coat with durabond than any finishing mud.

Can you use a blue box like this if your fixture has green wires?
@Alemensch
@Alemensch Год назад
Why not add support to your new light fixture, prime your old hole prior to taping and adding compound? Problems I see are failing support for your new light fixture and the old drywall spot absorbing the compound and not having a barrier of primer to prevent that.

If you add a j-box it would look out of place and unprofessional… You could change the fixture style or replace the wire which would require snaking in new wires . Then the job gets more extensive…

retired electrician---out of 100 times cable will be long enough maybe 5 times----we don't waste money by using extra material --- also cable has to be secured close to box to meet code during construction so your not going to just grab the cable---if I found work like this in my house it would be an indicator of handyman work done after construction or lousy original contractor
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 2 года назад
I find about 1/3rd to 1/2 will work out. Not having a staple on the cable close to the box inside the wall, a place where you'll never move it for decades, as well as the box having a tight grip on the romex, I view as a very minor issue. Thanks for watching
@ThePatriotsBrother
@ThePatriotsBrother 2 года назад
I agree,… not having a staple close to the junction box isn’t a big deal. It’s not under any pressure or moving in any way. The wire should be just fine. This was done perfectly and most home improvement contractors could learn a few things from this, especially cutting the drywall paper before adding the compound for a smooth finish. Beautifully done!

Late to the comment game here, but if you'd have notched out a little more drywall paper to the left and right of your cut, your drywall tape would have also covered your counter-sunk screws holding your brace.
@MathGeekQ

Is there no need to attach the box to a stud? It's just leveraging on drywall, and then it was to support the weight of the light fixture. Really curious about this.
@MathGeekQ
@MathGeekQ Год назад
To those who are a little concerned about this like I was, the answer I found is: yes. Those electrical boxes are rated for 6 lbs (says so on the box itself too). Our light fixture was about 1.5 lbs and it's holding up nicely.
@jimw6991
@jimw6991 Год назад
@@MathGeekQ I was wondering the same thing. Do you know if they make remodel boxes rated more than 6 pounds?
@MathGeekQ
@MathGeekQ Год назад
@@jimw6991 When I was shopping around, I saw one that went as far as 8lbs, so I think that's around the limit for these remodel boxes. A neat trick I saw to install an "old work" box anywhere between two studs is to bridge the two studs with a 2x4, place it just below where the electrical box would go so you can nail/screw it on top. But that means you'll have to make hole in your drywall and patch/paint it after.
@NavinBetamax
@NavinBetamax 2 года назад
So......when you re-locate a light fixture....and to get an extra light .....you have to invert the old fixture on the new location ...and Magically it will Morph into a 3 Lamp Fixture from the old 2 light Fitting !!!
