If you live in the suburbs, then aim to live within 5km of the beach is my advice. It will be cooler in summer. If you like inner city then you can go into some great suburbs 5km in either direction and will be accessible to city, shopping and restaurants. My advice is to embrace the sport and recreation culture in Perth. Go to beach. Do kayaking on river. Don't just spend your weekends at shopping centres and complain that shops aren't open every night. There isn't the demand for it and its not the culture. If you're swimming in ocean, make sure you can swim well. Ther is surf and rips and you want to stay safe. There are some great picnic sports and walkways along the beach and river and is the best place to be on a hot afternoon.

Just curious. As you are using the work holiday visa. You reckon that you can "upgrade " to another visa which enable you to remain there after a couple of years or you have to pack up and return back to Sin?

Nice! Informative! I do wanna ask, hows the safety in Perth, especially at night? I'm looking to visit in a month or so and I've heard mixed things about the CBD area.

Hey! Walking outside at night in Perth definitely does not make me feel as safe compared to Singapore. They have bare minimum street lights when it comes to night time. The CBD’s actually better because there’s more people out at night. Outside of the city, it’s pretty quiet. But of course, if you’re talking about 2am, 3am on a Friday night or weekend, the CBD will get rowdy too. But relatively, I think Perth is rather ok safety wise) compared to places like Italy where you have pickpockets everywhere. The people here are very friendly & helpful too. Hope you enjoy your stay here!

Hey why did you decide on Perth over other places in Australia? We are considering moving to Perth from Sydney but would love to hear the pros and cons.

Hey! I came over from SG because of my partner who lives in Perth. But I've heard Perth is better in terms of living costs than the eastern states. Got quite a bit of people moving over from the east.

What are the good and safe suburbs in Perth which are about 10km-12km from the CBD. The 2nd hand car market has gone through the roof, a used Toyota Corolla cost about A$22K - A$25 now. Weekly groceries of $200 is excessive, even in Sydney it only about $150 for 2 person even with the high cost of living now.

I also think it might be because we get groceries from Woolworths and I’ve been hearing that Woolworths prices for produce is inflated. We don’t spend on junk food! So that explains the higher grocery costs too.

You can cut your grocery bill in half by not shopping at Coles or Woolworths, there are lots of Asian food shops like MCQ which sell common grocery items much cheaper.

I teach piano. When you are in a foreign & new city, it’s the best place to chase your passion. Definitely will not be easy starting up, but keep going. The Asian community is pretty strong here.

$200 a week for groceries seems a bit excessive especially if it is just for one person on a frugal budget.

It really depends on the quality of food you are okay with consuming and your caloric/nutrition needs. For me, I don't get junk/processed foods from the supermarket. Hope that makes more sense.

@@skyearthyx Some humble suggestions. Go and sign up for Costco membership and buy food there at a cheaper price BUT those food items will be in big quantity. You can consider sharing the costs with neigbours or friends, but it is much worth the value and save lot of money in long term. Good lucks and good decision in moving to Perth! Hope you can get a car of your own soon.

$200 per week would be the bare minimum for a healthy diet unless your diet consists of 80% carbs.

@@eat_ze_bugs Dont know where you buy your food but we live on around $100 per person. Thats mainly vegetables fruit and meat including fish. Healthy is much cheaper than unhealthy if you dont buy packaged food.

Well, I mean if you’re in the rat race long enough, you understand the value of a slow city which values work life balance and the definition of your time. Money is one thing but I think the older I get, the basics are more important than the frills, of night life and a city running till 10pm or 12 midnight. I used to enjoy when I was younger but more time with the wife and spending time with a family I hope to have one day has become my number one priority now. There is a reason why Singapore’s birth rate is so low, because it’s a non stop race to your deathbed.

For those shitting on Australia just somethings to note about why this is an appealing option to Singaporeans in general: If you’re in the rat race long enough, you understand the value of a more chilled city which values work life balance, people and the definition of your time. Money is one thing but I think the older I get, the basics are more important than the frills, such as night life and a city running till 10pm or 12 midnight. I used to enjoy these things when I was younger but as time passes, more time with the wife and spending time with a family I hope to have one day has become my number one priority now. There is a reason why Singapore’s birth rate is so low, because it really is a non stop race to your deathbed, and you can feel it in the energy of the city as soon as you touchdown in Singapore.

Same thoughts. I enjoyed the city life when I was younger. When I first came Perth, I thought the city was too boring for me at first. But then it revealed it’s charm and I actually appreciate & enjoy living here 🙌🏻
