im getting an access denied error when i try to move documents to my external hdd. saying there is a file that cant be redirected but idk what that file could be as it looks to be only games in the doc folder. im on windows 10
Yes. I think I see what's happening here. Moving documents like this is straightforward if "Documents" contains only documents (Word, stuff like that). If you have folders in there of downloaded software (games?) it's a different story. You have to use command/prompt to move these separately. Easiest thing is to buzz up on RU-vid - "Moving downloaded software from one drive to another windows 10" (or whatever your system is) - to find out how. You find it's a different process. In all cases, set up a system restore date first (Easy - definitely do it) because using command/prompt (CMP), you must make sure every keystroke, space, forward/backslash etc is OK before you launch with "Enter". It may put up "error" or it may send your app to Mars. You have to figure out the paths that any such software will have to its data before you move anything. Often, the reason for wanting to move these things is "Low on drive space" because you have one or two softwares in there generating loads of consuming data (video editing, DAW, stuff like that) and it's getting slow/crashy. What our friend here has shown us isn't that. Can your software browse for data if it/the data is moved? Can it operate from two different drives and how do you set this up? How do you preserve projects in progress when doing this? Doing this first will generally mean your documents folder won't have to be moved. The stuff taking up all the space gets moved to its own dedicated drive and relieves the problem. You may well be in the situation where you have this type of problem to solve for these very reasons. At that stage, two things are very important - set up system restore as your "way back" and back-up stuff to off-system. The other is to review your use of such software and intervene to get what you've already done properly organised and set up. Look at a few tutorials (not just one, they are rarely complete fixes or overviews) to get your head around how to use these types of softwares before you move them. OK?
Great video and excellent guide for moving system folders. I do have one question. If I have to reinstall my operating system do I just delete the system folders that come with the reinstall? Thanks for any help you can offer.
I mistakenly moved some of my Drive D folders to a folder called ‘DeliveryOptimization’ in Drive D. How can i access those folders and move them bsck to Drive D?
Before doing any of this, make sure that Onedrive is sorted out and under your control. When re-configuring your drives for reasons of space shortage, you really don't want Bill Gates's maverick interruptions. If you are quite OK with Onedrive, you probably don't need to do this anyway - you'll be using cloud storage. If you're not sure of Onedrive, consider using it to gain space on your computer - a little bit of study and practice. It's an alternative. You can also consider merging two drives................... Decisions, decisions....................................
