Shannon from www.house-impr... shows you the way he finishes drywall "butt" joints. Those are the joints in the drywall that are not beveled, they are two straight edges beside each other. Video © 2014 SKS Media.

Thank you for not including a COMPLETE HISTORY of drywall taping like some other videos and thank you for not over explaining each and every tool. You jump right into it, and that's what viewers really want to see. Big thumbs up!! Thanks!!

Agree with RAN MAN and (with his permission) adding to the list: "Thank you for not playing loud and/or annoying music."

It would be fine to go into the complete history afterward. Hell it might be kinda chill if you were to channel Bob Ross and ramble about it while you finished more joints. That being said, everyone hates loud, distracting music during a tutorial and example video.

As a professional painting contractor, I can appreciate this video because I have encountered this type of finish work where the joints are not beveled and it is necessary to try and hide the taped area without leaving a hump on the wall. Very good job of explaining this technique, Shannon.

Thanks Shannon. I did some of this in the fall and had great difficulty getting the wall smoothed. You make it look so easy but it's actually quite a skill. Thanks for the tips. That bevelled putty knife is an excellent idea. I will get one of those for my next project - basement.

For beginners, I suggest lightly damping the tape. I learned taping from an old head carpenter and he had me run the tape through water and use my fingers to 'sqeegee' off the water as it came out of the tub of water. This technique stops the problem of dry pockets in the tape. Also, you don't have to thin the mud on that coat which would be easier for a beginner. Great video, like usual. For beginners, I would also suggest a bare bulb shining on your work from the side so you can see any imperfections during the finish. If you can't see any imperfections with a harsh side light, you won't see any when the room is lighted during normal use.
@gil-juniorriseabovebetraya5972
jollyandwaylo any other suggestions mates?

You can also run some mud over your tape once it is embedded and clean it off. Keeps bubbles from forming.

Hi Shannon, The information in this video is great. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. I just learned about is a great mistake I have been making is not letting it dry between coats. I try to rush and get it all done in one day. No wonder I have to sand so much. I can't wait to try this again. Which will be soon because I am remolding my kitchen. I can't believe non of the other tutorials I have watched mentioned letting the mud dry between coats. Great video, I think the 3 major needed trowels in doing all this is a flat small putty trowel used in beginning , the rectangular long type in the second part , and for the corners the inner/outer corner trowels (not shown) . If you have those i am thinking you can tape /mud most walls in a home or building using one of those 3 category trowels. Huge thing is don't forget a Bedding coat or your screwed in taping nice method.

It's very important to fill the crack up completely between the sheets even using the screen mesh tape. If not an air pocket will from under the paper tape, and a crack will form under the screen mesh tape. Some drywallers don't like the screen mesh tape claiming crackage in the corners, and this is the reason why. All cracks should be filled just to play it safe, especially when using the mesh tape.

i have a drywall company and will be posting videos of how to's from a gopro cam as well and i do have to make a suggestion about your butt joints, you use that flat trowel but you put it on edge on the butt to see how much it teeters and this will determine how wide you should make it, if it teeters alot it could be almost 3 trowels wide to maybe 1 trowel wide if its on a good stud (if its in a bit), not all butts are the same width. I see this done too often where tapers make them 12" to 16" wide on all of em and when the house is complete and the sun hits it you see the humps all over.

Nice work Shannon. If the butt joint isn't a nasty one (relatively flat) you can usually get away with only 2 coats. Just bust it out 2 1/2 trowels wide on the first coat after tape then you're more or less just skimming it 3 wide on the next coat to get rid of any pinholes or imperfections. I'm surprised you do your own finishing, the reno guys around here usually sub the taping out. Looks good!

Thanks for the comment. I do most of my own work because of the nightmare in cordinating different trades. I seldom will not do much more than 2000 board feet myself though.
