How to Multiply Fractions with Whole Numbers
To multiply a fraction by a whole number, simply multiply the numerator of the fraction by the whole number while keeping the denominator the same. Then, simplify the result if possible. Here's a step-by-step example:
1. **Write down the whole number as a fraction**: If the whole number is n , you can write it as n/1.
2. **Multiply the fractions**: Multiply the numerators together and the denominators together.
3. **Simplify (if needed)**: Reduce the fraction to its simplest form by finding the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and the denominator and dividing both by it.
Let's illustrate this with an example:
3/4 multiplied by 2:
1. Write 2 as a fraction: 2/1.
2. Multiply the numerators:
3 * 2 = 6 .
3. Multiply the denominators:
4 * 1 = 4 .
4. So, 3/4 multiplied by 2 is 6/4.
5. Simplify the result:
6/4 simplifies to 3/2
So, 3/4multiplied by 2 equals 3/2.
