In this video I go over 7 rates that are uncommon to end up on ships in the US Navy. I learned some of this information from talking to people in these rates and from doing research before and during my time in the Navy.
Background: STG2 (Sonar Technician Second Class) on an FDNF destroyer.
Let me know your opinion or if you have one of these rates down in the comments below!

The only sure way to not be assigned to a ship is to stay out of the Navy. It's what we do. In my years in the canoe club I have been on Aircraft Carrier, MSTS Transport, Missile submarines and diesel subs and I enjoyed them all. I also served in a FASRON and a Heavy Attack squadron. For shore duty I taught Aviation Electronics school and submarine Navigation school. My motto was always volunteer. If you are so picky you don't want a ship stay on the land.

If you join the Navy, you should go to sea. That's what being the Navy is all about. If you don't want to go to sea, join the Army.

SeaBee for shore duties. I did my time at sea and loved it especially hitting the 15ft swells and seeing waves raining down on the bridge. The best part about sea life is visiting multiple countries per deployment.

I don't know much about ships cause I never set foot on one other than a submarine tender docked in Holy Loch Scotland. I made the decision in boot camp to volunteer for submarine duty. We went out to sea for 70 days, surfaced and headed back to the tender and turned over the boat to the opposite crew. Did this twice a year for 3 years for a total of 6 patrols. When the seas got rough, we just went deeper!

So, RP’s are on ships LPD, LHD and larger. CVN’s have the most for sure. The deal with RP’s is that they usually go greenside (Marine Corp), and with Seabee/EOD/SEAL/SWCC. I’ve met RP’s and HM’s that have been in 20 years and never touched a ship because they have been in the “field”. It’s true, Sailors should be on ships but the Navy does more than just being at Sea. There’s a lot of Joint Force situations we are tied to.

Greetings, I served in the Navy From 1983-1989 and never served on a Ship, I was an EO (equipment operator) in the Seabees, (construction battalion) When someone found out I was in the Navy I was always asked what ship I was on, then I would explain what a Seabee was. We are an often forgotten part of the Navy, but we have a very rich and colorful history, Our symbol for EO is a bulldozer, If I was wearing my dress uniform and someone asked me what my rating was I would tell them with a straight face that I was a “Farmers Mate Second Class” and that I worked on the Navy owned farms growing food for the Fleet. 😂😂😂

The Naval Academy had its own Dairy Farm in nearby Gambril Maryland to serve the 4000 plus midshipman in Annapolis . Shut down in 1997 and is now an organic farm .

You were almost 100% accurate until you hit the last 2 rates. You can absolutely hit a ship as a CTR and as a CS on your first tour. On my first tour we had new CSSA’s and CTRSN show up all the time (on a small boy). I think the set of rates that you forgot are SEABEE’s. They are almost never on ships, especially for their first tour. They are assigned to shore based construction battalions. 9 year FC1 here, btw.

@jamesdewer
@jamesdewer Год назад
@@MrFooliofocker they could alleviate undermanned DD DDGs by shifting overmanned ratings to the fleet, as a former DDer we were always short staffed cooks, GMs, TM, and Engineers, DP and as you mentioned Corpsmen. What's it like to be a PC? They could roll both PN PC into PN. They did the same to EM and IC which are completely different ratings. Could you imagine an ICmen standing a switchgear watch?

Dont count on shore duty as a CS.A Destroyer has 10-15 CS. A Air Craft Carrier may have a Hundred since they cook round the clock. People eat on all floating units. Sea Bee rates see next to no sea duty beyond hitching a ride to a project. The Navy moves around.Thats what they do. If you want to spend years in one place a shore.....Join the Air Force.I have a friend who had only 2 duty stations in 20 years. He spend 13 years on 1 base !

The Navy is a massive sacrifice. You will give up and Uncle Sam, the United States government will get every last nickel out of your four years. Trust me, very few people that join the Navy don't wind up on ships. Sailors belong on ships. Ships belong at sea. You will be going to sea and you will be saying goodbye to your life for 4 years or more. If Army taught engineering I'd have gone into the army. The dog faces, at least are ashore, The Nav? No way cuddles! The Nav you're out in the middle of the ocean. There is nothing out there! Unless it's night time and you happen to see the stars. Only then you get an idea which direction you're headed. For certain whatever direction it calls for pain. It is tough on you and it will ruin your private life. Have no idea what women would want to join the Navy. Something like 75% of them. Hate it! Get pregnant just so they can get the hell out. The career people make your life hell and they're all you'll ever see. Don't get me started. Day-in, day-out discipline, discipline, discipline and mail call. The real numbnuts are the gyrenes! They get the benefit of all that "training", at sea time then sit around the coop mean-mugging the mirror sad yo. My dad had it right he was Army.
