I was always really good at school- straight A student and people would say to me “oh that’s easy for you, you’re gifted”, and I always said “no, I’m just more interested”. I was smart because I wanted to learn, and tbh, I never really studied hard or anything. When you’re interested, learning is easy. If you treat learning as a chore, or something you have to do, it’s hard. I don’t believe that some people are smart and others are dumb. Smart people are just more interested, and apply themselves without it being a chore. I’m 58 this year, and I’m still learning. “Every day’s a school day” is my motto.

I'm no genius, but as a child I read a lot. I too read the encyclopedias , guiness book of world records, biographies and autobiographies of people who created or built things. I was one of those kids who hated school, but loved to learn ... about anything. I started out my working career as a welder in a shipyard and a decade later went into software development. I was able to see similarities in building software like building ships. I also realized quickly that dealing with managers or foremen was the same just a different field of play. This has allowed me to be able to be given any task and succeed where many others never get started.

I, too, have the benefit of tremendous retention & comprehension of written material, but I had to study critical thinking, formal & informal logical fallacies, and the scientific method to be able to do anything meaningful with the knowledge I'd accumulated as an autodidact. Knowledge is NOT intelligence nor is it wisdom, just facts, the beginning of the critical thinking process. Its what your mind can do with these facts that matters - and that involves skills that are more and more rarely taught in America any more.

Sir how we can pour love of reading in kids???
@jackgarrett7349
@jackgarrett7349 4 месяца назад
Not that hard really. 1.) For example, if your kid likes adventure movies like the Avengers - introduce them to comic books. If they like sports then introduce them to books about the greats of their sport. 2.) Get them interested in building models. They make models of anything now days so find what interest your kid and build models with them. This makes them read the instructions to build it. Make sure to help them as needed. 3.) Most importantly, YOU READ TO YOUR KID! Read a little bit to them at bed time. My kids, through me have read all the classics from Bible stories, to Moby Dick. This helps them find books that interest them and if nothing else they know a book they want to read for themselves. 4.) Talk to them about books and the characters and ideas within them. Show them how a movie they liked that was based on a book differs from the original book. Challenge them to read it. 5.) Introduce them to Kindle, and don't omit Audible. A book you listen to online can lead to them reading the printed version, but at least it is still consuming the contents of a book. 6.) Finally, if nothing else, talk to them about what they read online. Encourage them to read more about it and seek other opinions online.@@m.aniquemani6574

I don't have Musk's brilliance, but his remarks about the "semantic tree" reminded me of my difficulty remembering things when I was in college, over a decade before the age of personal computers. It was as if I was throwing new knowledge onto a pile of knowledge, and the new knowledge always buried the older knowledge. It was in my head somewhere, but I had no means of retrieving it. I came up with the idea of creating mental file cabinets. New information was neatly placed in folders (and, later, subfolders) of basic information. I always knew where to look for the information I was trying to remember. When I explained my method to a computer scientist who had asked me how I could remember things, his jaw dropped, and he said, "That's how computers work." Around 2005, when I began studying for a master's degree in my spare time, a professor shared his Mind Map program with the class. That's when my jaw dropped. Mind mapping is how the brain learns things. I had been practicing a rough form of mind mapping for decades before I knew anything about creating mind maps.

@@richh1576 I think it was Thomas Edison who said, "Genius is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration." Calvin Coolidge, who was usually a man of few words, said, “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On!' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”

Please how does the mind map work?
@AmericanActionReport
@AmericanActionReport 4 месяца назад
@@joshuanamo228 How to mind map: Let's say you're listening to a lecture. In most cases, people take notes by writing things down as they hear them, so the notes are not in logical order but in chronological order. That makes it harder to make sense of the notes later on. With mind mapping, you write the name of the topic in the center of the page. With each major point you hear, you write nearby and draw a line from that point to the main topic. Each time a sub-point is presented, you write it near the major point from which it proceeds. At the end of the process, you have an information tree. The main topic is the trunk (though it's in the center of the page), and all the points, sub-points, and sub-sub-points branch out in all directions from there. With mind mapping, you deliberately remember things the way the mind naturally learns things; it connects new information to already established information. Not only that, but it helps to make your thinking more logical. You'll get to the point that you'll find yourself mind mapping even in your head, without pencil and paper. I'm not satisfied with any of the RU-vid videos I've seen on mind mapping. Most of them either talk "around" the subject, or they complicate it with unnecessary facts. Here's a link to the least unsatisfactory video I've seen on mind mapping: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oY4sUQzXJ1g.html

Actually, it said the semantic tree and really studying the core concepts first allows one to remember the rest of what one is reading on that subject. Of course, focused study was another thing that was talked about. So, if we were to study like Elon Musk, it seems, according to this video… we would narrow what we read to just what we need to build that framework and then to add details when necessary. Also, talking about what we are reading aids us in remembering. Talking with an expert allows us to add to that memory with new relevant information. At least, that’s what I got from the video. I’m very curious to read more posts to learn more with all of you.

Not so> A basic knowledge + learning from reading books on various topics of interest + information not of the MuskRats authorship + cunning + deception in the eyes of the public + the gullibility of individuals who fall victim to believing what they see, hear and read of the work by a scoundrel... then the products sell themselves and who would have thought that skulduggery was what got the MuskRat famous? Take it as being true - as my years of designing things now all around the world were magic, but I did not wave a wand to make my work vanish and products appear on the market that has changed the way people work, live and play. Where is the genius the MuskRat is conceived to have from? I put years of time and effort into designing things I wanted and believed everyone would appreciate having to make their life more fulfilled, but after my designs were snuck out of my home by someone the world soon began to change in many ways as my inventions got released and taken up by people who found my inventions handy in some way. Critical thinking and problem solving in varying degrees are common sense, and it all starts in the home, where you are taught to be curious about the world around you and why things are done the way they are, and to imagine things in your head and manipulate them there, then try to apply it while being critical of the evolving process.
@TheresaReichley
@TheresaReichley 18 дней назад
I don’t think is necessarily common sense. Most people think they know how to think and problem solve and absorb information, but it’s not nearly as easy as it’s made out to be. Critical thinking isn’t something you are born able to do, most people can’t actually do it, and schools don’t help as they never teach the basic tools needed. It’s not enough to simply recognize a canonical list of fallacies, you need to learn philosophical logic, you need to learn to look to the basic facts and principles of the subject you’re trying to think about. You need to know the best sources of information on a topic rather than just going with the popular outlets. But because schools love to say they’re teaching thinking, they teach a few basic concepts, then a bunch of heuristics and shortcuts that sort of work in very basic situations, but fail miserably at higher levels.

I don’t believe we should allow students to just pass. You should only proceed when you understand a topic completely. We allow people to progress to stage 2 when they don’t fully understand step 1, which step 2 assumes.

Reading is the root core of gaining knowledge then observation. I failed at school found it boring what was taught was rather trivial all my knowledge has been self taught. Whatever i learn is because im enthusiastic about what i like try to vary it. It also boils down to having a good memory which many people say i have but sadly it doesn't mean you will be successful in life sometimes it can be a burden as some people in positions suspect you and also if you dont have any special letters on your CV so sadly throughout my life just done mundane jobs where i couldn't afford to improve myself academically. But i always having a keen interest in self taught learning

Spaced repetition. Learning = building concepts and mental models as basic building blocks. Lifelong learning and polymath are the goals to keep your neuroplasticity. You can only build knowledge on top of already acquired knowledge. There is quite a difference between education and learning. Education seldom delivers value. Deep learning and having solved a problem will always be engraved in your memory because you only store your reactions on the feelings you had when solving it. And you only store when you care about it or are concerned about it or you got an epiphany during an experience.

For me to retain what i learned..i have to understand what i learn otherwise i will forget knowledge.critical thinking is how i retain information. You can know the answer to a question but if you do not understand why that answer is correct then you won't be able to connect that useless information to anything else. I went into nursing when I was 26 years old and the only way I got through it was through critical thinking skills. When I took my state boards it was the first year in Michigan that they did critical thinking testing which meant that you had to understand why the answer was correct and not what was the correct answer. There were so many students that did not pass that test that year and had to take it over. I finished the test so quickly and I thought to myself oh I couldn't have been that easy but it was because I have always believe that knowledge is not important if you do not understand it.

You have more than a 100% project focus and centralized self focus and have interest in discovering things and developing things once your mind decided to do that as I analyzed only and that outward self proclamation was very evident with your social media posts and indeed you're a genius in your craft. Me, I don't consider myself a genius so that I will not be limited by anything and everything knowledge wise, enthusiasm wise.

The TV in the USA at the time was every bit as bad! If you don't believe it, find some videos of TV shows in the 1950's. People got sucked into watching it because it was this amazing new technology and most couldn't get past that to see that what it was putting out was complete garbage! Just as Musk did, I turned to reading because IF you could get the right books, there was actually something of value there. Things that were actually interesting and, more important, things that actually related to actual reality (in starkest contrast to all the TV shows).

This is new to people? I know I've done this since I learned how to learn. (as in teach myself) I know for a fact I did this in early college. They put the index at the start of books/papers for a reason. Even with that, I will often thumb through the pages to get the overall idea and then start drilling into things that interest me most. As I gain momentum I'm better able to plow through a book. Text to speech helps a lot too these days.

Dr. Chandler at UCLA one of my Neuroscience teachers said "Learn the concept and you will get the details". Very similar idea to me hearing about this "semantic tree". It changed how deeply and quickly I learned things for the rest of my life. I highly recommend conceptual learning over fact memorization. Use both but prioritize the first and you will find great results from my experience. Best

I have several degrees, and the more I learn, the more I am aware of how much more there is to learn and how ignorant I am. In fact, at this point I realize that all that I do know is based upon subjective observation and is suspect to the constraints and mutability of spatial/temporal existences. And, like Musk, until I understand the base framework of an idea, then I dont and cant bother with the details. It took me many years in technology to realize the enormous limitation that context and context switching imposes on technological innovation. I dont consider myself knowledgeable to a topic unless I can teach it. As far as knowing many subjects, the more you know, including arenas of knowledge, the greater your ability to abstract solutions in general. Until you know many knowledge bases, you can never fathom the universality of knowledge. In the end, they are all very similiar, and the same, but different implementations of critical solutions.

Ill be honest schools seem to do this all to often in higher I lexile books. Memory seems so critical for learning. And, I feel we are memorizing sat words While we can understand prefix affix and suffix as an example. The conjugated prefix affix and suffix. For many years I didn't study that part. To study these seems so useful. We need a digital progress testing system of memorization. Simply, if something is tested and memorized it can now be on the web. k-12
