as a daily commuter, it's pretty easy to ride in the cold: thermal battery cover (to get more out of your battery), thermal layers under your clothing + wool socks, thermal face mask, windproof coat with fleece, + windproof mittens. Nice and cozy every ride.

This is one of the things that surprised me when I first got my ebike. Even in August on a Sunny day, a cool breeze combined with the speeds on the bike really can make it uncomfortably cold.

They make heated Clothing. Get a Vest, Gloves, Hat all heated. Nice Thick Socks and Winter Boots. You will be nice and warm. You would only need to put it on the low settings as moving around will warm you up.

If your concerned about your hands in the winter there is an easy alternative to gloves. I use bar end hand guards/warmers. They slip on over your hand grips and levers and velcro on the ones I have are made from the same material as a drysuit for diving.

Heated gloves, shoes, vest/jacket are cheap and easy to make DIY. Tips, 1. thick socks don’t work as well, if the boots/shoes are crushing them down ie you need room in there to allow for the “loft” 2. overshoes/spats to keep out moisture and wind. 3. Mittens are always warmer than gloves, windchill is a factor and so is waterproofing. 4. Thermal leggings or ladies tights (I was in the army in the eighties, in German winters out on exercise for 3 to 4 weeks at a time, every night we’d get out of the days wet cold clothes into dry clothes to sleep, in the morning we’d put the cold wet clothes back on 🥶 try it some time it’s a world of pain (your socks and tights would usually have dried off in your sleeping bag)

I live in West County Erie, PA and ride year round. I'm lucky that my commute to - from work is 1 mile each way, about 5-6 minutes ride time. I wear thermals under my clothing and use motorcycle gloves designed for winter use, as well as a rain/snow proof winter coat. I don't use a face covering since my trips are so short.

Thank you for doing this video I live in the same area as you but first winter with an pedal-assist Lectric bike. It's my main transportation and I'd like to ride year-round, but in the cold my eyes water, my fingertips get so cold it's painful even though I wear gloves and I have to wrap my head and neck with a thick scarf but my helmet does not fit. Hopefully the head hood, helmet and heated gloves with keep me enjoying my bike year-round. (Although I am disappointed that the battery drains so quickly - but there are other videos for that issue.) Thanks again.

Anti-fog shield is critical in the winter. You'll be keeping your visor down and so you need to have a shield that does not accumulate fog from your breath

I just moved to somewhere with winter been commuting to work on a Bbshd modified 36-100v controller for 6 years of two bbshd. At most in Vancouver Canada we would get a week rarely two of snow/slush but work found me moving to North Eastern BC the locals make claims of -50 but I am determined. Well only way of getting to work or anywhere else until I can get my get my N ( new drivers license)... Moving here and knowing how much this winter will suck every morning really lit a fire under my ass to finally get my license that's for sure. Anyways love the videos considering a cyc gen2 with new controller depends if I can move enough money around to make the purchase. Already have studded tires, considering ordering heated handle bar grips definitely need to purchase a nice full face shield helmet had a close call few weeks ago smacked the back of a old 1930s era looking car built like a tank not a mark but left me concussed for hours after helmet took most the blow.

One thing i would add to your gear is pants straps. These velcro straps keep your pants from balooning out. Keeps out cold slush and keeps your pants from getting caught in moving parts.

New Jersey is subtropical to us in the Catskill Mountains 😋 But yeah I agree, hands 1st, feet 2nd, face 3rd. Biking down the mountains even when it's in the mid 50's you get a wicked chill. NPL Ventures, where would you suggest besides Amazon or Ebay, to get a 16 in motorized wheel kit? Been very difficult to find
@johndopamine7614
@johndopamine7614 Год назад
Besides AliExpress I'd recommend buying a hub and having a wheel built at a local shop. Not the cheapest but you get your preferred hub and hopefully a decent quality rim.

The manual that came with my ebike warned: Not for use below 50 F or 10 C because the battery will get damaged. So do we have to buy two heated vests and wrap one around the battery enclosure?
@johndopamine7614
@johndopamine7614 Год назад
It should create some of it's own heat while you use it and stay warmish at least for short rides. Using the battery when it's been sitting in the cold is what's really bad, and putting it into a cold frame would suck out the heat quickly. I pretty much keep my entire bike inside at room temperature until I'm riding and it doesn't seem to lose range/voltage like when I've let it sit outside.
@ralphsmith8682
@ralphsmith8682 Год назад
Does the cold weather effect your battery? I thought it might discharge faster.

Somebody must make a windshield or fairing. I used to ride my motocycles all winter in Wisconsin, seldom needed my electric vest and gloves. I'd expect a windshield to cut 10% in battery range.

This is terrible advice. You don't want layers you want to concentrate on removing wind and rain. If you're cycling your body will be warm otherwise. With lots of layers you will sweat like crazy.
