You may have covered this behind-the-scenes, but the most important tip I give new riders is to look where they want to go, rather than looking down. I became immediately comfortable riding once I did that.

Good man, making her practice that dismount. Number one thing a new rider needs to do, hammer the dismount, both intentional and the jump bail. I do let strangers try it on occasion. It really depends on what my gut says about them. I always tell people the OneWheel is like a Segway and a skateboard had a baby.

Excellent video. Looks like you've got a handful of people who say Dominant Foot in front still. I too think that dominant foot goes in front (most of the time) ... BUT (to restate what I commented on another video) even better is to have them experiment with both "goofy" and "regular" stance. Whichever feels better is going to be the preferred stance. Some experienced boarders ride different stance on different board sports too. Lastly, boards are designed symmetrical. Always more safe and fun to learn to ride both directions😎. I've been meaning to make my own instructional videos since day one. Maybe I'll get around to it someday. You did fantastic, safe, professional job.

Actually, I had a patient and trusted friend who let me learn on his gear, similar style, safety/dismount and slow go... encouraged me to swap stances ... I still have a stronger side, but swapping helps me to feel the differences between, then compensate / correct both ... just ordered mine. Great vids and thanks.

Hey Jimmy I know this is an old video but just wanted to clear something up. You're right when you mentioned the footedness vs stance question. In fact you're the only person I've ever seen reference dominant foot and whether it should be rear vs front in the context of any board sport - so you're ahead of the curve on that. Most people don't think too deeply about it. The real answer is that footedness and stance aren't linked or correlated in any way. It's just as wrong to tell someone their dominant foot should be in front as it is to tell them it should be in the back. People can have either foot be dominant and can prefer either stance independently. The push test you did on Kate demonstrated that her instinctual reactive response to forward motion was to lead with her right foot. The push test shows us what stance someone is rather than what their dominant foot is - so she's goofy-footed and should've been put on with her right foot in front rather than the natural/regular stance you put her in. The same knowledge can be derived by asking someone to slide along the floor in a pair of socks. Most people are actually right-footed just like most people are right-handed but you'll find about a 50/50 split with the push test. Many right-footed people will lead with their left leg. The same people would often kick a ball with their right foot, but it's their natural reaction to brace against forward motion with their left leg in the front and their right leg behind. My family works well to explain this. There are 6 of us who all do a range of boardsports. All 6 are right-footed, but 4 of us are goofy and 2 of us are natural. Basically what I'm saying is that footedness doesn't inform stance (some people prefer dominant foot forward and some rear like you mentioned in the video). That's why we do things like a push-test rather than asking someone which foot they would use to kick a ball. The dominant foot is irrelevant, the thing we're looking for is their subconscious athletic response to moving forward and finding balance. The push test you performed didn't show which foot was dominant - it showed her inherent stance preference and then you told her to ride in the other direction. Source: I'm a snowboard instructor/coach who thinks way too much about the biomechanical properties of riding boards.

Man! I want one! After a lifetime of labor I pulled the plug on my mechanic job 5 months ago. I'm nearly ready to go with my pickup truck and my slide-in camper. I plan to run around the country doing Permaculture projects. I had one of the first solowheels back when that "Inventist" guy was just starting to make them. I got one of the prototypes. I didn't like the way you just roll straight forward but I had it for about 8 years and I put a lot of miles on it. This type of one wheel looks like it would be much better for rougher areas like trails and such. It might be just the thing for when I'm parked but want to roll around a bit at the campsite. I'm torn between this and some kind of folding fat tire bike. There's not a lot of room in a pickup truck camper.

This is great if space is tight! The new electric unicycle are pretty sweet too. I compare the two in a video later.

@@freshlycharged I've heard of those. I'd be interested in seeing the review. A non electronic unicycle would probably be good exercise as well. After all those years on the solowheel I imagine I could figure out how to ride a unicycle pretty quickly.

@@freshlycharged Oops, I've basically already owned one. My old solowheel was configured like a scooter. I'd have to ride rolling straight forward. I think it makes you less able to respond to emergencies. Of course it may be easier to ride nowadays since I lost 73 pounds. I went from 245 to 172 since I retired. I've got cancer and I'm trying to knock it out without chemo or radiation. It's my opinion that most cancer deaths are actually due to chemo. Anyway my point is now I weight only 172 so I'm looking forward to riding now that I'm do much lighter.

Ok JC, I've subscribed -- something I don't do often. Think I've seen most of your vids on the OW, and this one pushed me over the edge. Good stuff. Still just watching vids re: OW; trying to really make up my mind on taking the plunge on one. Thx for continuing to post stuff up like this; I know this is something you got a feeling for, but appreciate the time and effort; good stuff for those of us thinking. ;-)

Thanks Joseph! More great content to come! Depending on where you live, you may be able to find a deal on a lightly used board! Have you checked out my blog article on how to buy a used Onewheel?

Thx for the reply, JC. Yeah, I've looked at CL locally; for the stuff I've seen, not much of a price diff, so I think I'd go new (and that's my preference if possible). Not really accessible over here in Honolulu, but there is a shop that has a couple; might have to check 'em out over the holidays. ;-) Joe

@@HandsONreviews4u I think I'm just biding my time, RWP. Got a couple of bills I'd rather get outta the way first so I don't feel guilty about it. Lol.

I plan on getting a OneWheel and I feel like I’d let friends try it. For strangers it would depend on how they approach me and if they seem like a good person.

Great video. Am considering a OneWheel Pint, but have never even rode a skateboard, was a little nervous about spending so much on something I am unfamiliar with.

I got my first Onewheel one year ago. Never did skateboarding or snowboarding. I've had a great time. Consider getting a used one to start. That's what I did.
