Wow! Way more to this than buying a collection and renting a space. 7 installments and I bet you whittled it down.

How are you shipping records at a cost-effective way? I see on discogs folks only adding $5 for shipping, how are they doing that without eating into the profit margin?

It costs $6-7 to ship a single LP via USPS media mail. $4ish for the actual shipping and then $2ish for proper boxes and cardboard pads. No way around that.

I read on Reddit that you are required to have a brick and mortar store to get an account with any record distributor. I'm not sure how up to date that information is. Has that been your experience? I would like to start a record store but I can't afford to rent a physical location so I was thinking about starting an online store to slowly build an audience and inventory ect and open an in-person store in a few years if I'm able to do well on the online store. The brand of my store would cater to younger vinyl enthusiasts who are interested in pop stars from the last 20 years and new releases, so being able to buy new records from a distributor would be important. What do you think? Thanks!

That is completely false. No distributors require a physical store. Some require a legit business license, but that has nothing to do with brick n mortar

How do your margins work on new albums in an antique mall where they take a cut of every sale
@NTXVinyl

No different than any other shop. First off, you have to be smart about what you stock. Secondly, yes I pay a fee on a each sale. But I don’t pay employees, a large rent, utilities, insurance on the building, etc. - like stand alone shops. So either way you’ve got costs cutting into your profit margins, but I guarantee mine are much less than most
