How to open a top loading washing machine locked/jammed lid 

I recently moved to a new apartment and the washer lid was broken. Didn't even use it before, wasn't plugged in or anything, just closed the lid once and it wouldn't open anymore. I couldn't find help online, so I tried different methods myself. I first opened it with the wire method and after understanding the mechism, I devised the simpler, screwdriver method.
