How to open up an old pocket watch case, screw on and snap on

I think I covered all of the different types of cases. If I see you use a sharp knife to open a case I will slap you silly. To win nothing name the maker of each watch. Answer might be listed if I watch this video again because right now I don't remember the makers names.

Thank you so much for your fantistic informative video. I had no idea how to take the cover off my Ingersoll Triumph watch. I now have the knowledge but i cannot get it to unscrew as yet as it appears to be stuck solid. I am not a watch collector but found the video so fascinating. Thanks for making the knowledge available to all.

I have a Caravelle pocket watch with double hinge - the rear cover opens to reveal the movement and the rear cover has two small wires that come out of the hinge on either side and apparently help hold the cover shut when it is closed. How do I snap the rear cover back on? I cannot seem to get the wires tucked back in correctly. I didn't see an example of this on your otherwise very helpful video.

I buy what I like that way I am not disappointed. Buy things that work because who knows what it will cost to fix. Buy or look at the Cooksey Shugart book on watches so you know what is out there. Here are some brands I have; Waltham, Elgin, Hamilton, Howard(Keystone), Illinois, South Bend, Hampden, Seth Thomas.

Hi Great video, I have a watch that has a very similar case and dust cover and the mechanism looks the same to the last watch in the video, my face appears to be a machined silver one rather than enamel. Thanks to your video I was able to swing out the mechanism and see it for the first time, can you tell me anything about the mechanism? Any info would be very appreciated. My case is sterling silver and hallmarked for London 1860/6,1 the maker's mark is J.H (Joseph Hirst). Any idea what the watch might be worth? There might be a burr created from the blade that is preventing the case from closing. If there is a burr I would stone the burr off with a fine stone. Don't use a file, it is to coarse.

No notch's on my pocket watch, very faint line between the case and the back cover. To small of a crack for X-acto knife blades so after watching your video that it was a screw on back. You showed to pull on the crown before trying to un-screw the back. Well the crown came out of the watch, and I can't get it back in place. So now I have a expensive broken watch that was working fine before, and still can't get the back off.
@bunnspecial
@bunnspecial 4 года назад
After reading your comment I see your mistake. You say that you determined that you had a screw on back and then pulled on the crown. Why did you pull on the crown? No where in my video do I say pull on the crown for a screw on back. I say to pull on the crown only if the case is a swing out type. There is no back to unscrew on a swing out type case, just the front. The reason to pull on the crown for a swing out case is to clear the stem from the movement.
@funlovingJohn
@funlovingJohn 4 года назад
@@bunnspecial I finely got the crown to snap in again. This is a high quality Yves Renoir Gold Swiss Quartz 51mm pocket watch that seams to keep perfect time. I would like to snap the back off to see the inside and see what battery it takes. I thought about using a utility knife blade as a chisel to snap off the back, but then snapping the back on again I might crack the glass. I have never seen a pocket watch with such a tight fit like no visible seam to put the blade into.
